Ethiopia's Geographic Challenge

Stratfor explains how Ethiopia's diverse geography historically has led to disunity among its people while also limiting the ability of foreign powers to establish influence.

@Stratfor P3) The west as Paul Romer suggested encourage rational rule systems to develop chartered cities this could alleviate poverty & instability much as Hong Kong's creation did (under lease agreements) such a thing could be done in Kush & in other parts of the developing world. Also a pressing issue is the survival of Boer nation in SAfrica. EU & US could help develop a social market union like EU for southern Africa with a independent Boer nation at its heart by creating chartered cities

Billy Giuliano Ethiopia's Achilles heel has been underdevelopment. The lack of a well-developed market economy and economic development (which presently is going through massive transformation) take away from the country. A strong national economy is crucial anywhere, anytime. Otherwise, Ethiopia has a long history, an exotic culture, natural beauty second to none, and temperate climate year round. Simply, paradise! If Ethiopia can sustain the current rate of development for another 20 years, and alleviate poverty and improve the living standard of its people, specially the rural areas, we would be talking about a brand new shining country. I see no reason why Ethiopia's economy cannot keep on humming for another 30 years. It has done well for a non-commodity based economy. Also, the formula is organic: renewable energy, improved infrastructure, value added manufacturing, etc... For good or bad, the tourism industry will keep on growing 20% every year, here after.

I am quite sure there are Americans who can produce in depth videos like this if they put a bit of research and effort in. The mentality that makes you think same ethnicities should live in a same political borders is just a backward one. I as an Ethiopian see it as a good opportunity to connect with one another as nations. The Borena Oromo and Kenyan Oromo,Ethiopian Afar people and other Afar people of the East Africa region... those gives us a good opportunity for the greater good of economic integration.War mongering will only put us in another cycle of hostilities which doesn't benefit any one.

British didn't give the Somali region to Ethiopia and Somaliland is not in Ethiopia it's an autonomous region. if u listen just to this video, she said Ethiopia acquired it in the 19th century. to defend itself from Italy's encroachment since it's only a matter of time before they expanded into Ethiopia. But during WW2 Ethiopia was occupied by Italy for 5 years which then Italy combined the territories to create IEA then British literally gave Ethiopia territory and Somaliland to Somalia. Then Ethiopia got it BACK in 1946 and Somaliland declared its INDEPENDENCE in 1991.

This Stratfor organization is a US centric operation. If a nation does not hold much in the way of US interest then the coverage of that region will be short and shallow like this video on Ethiopia. Just take a look at the coverage they give to Mexico and it's drug war. On a world wide scale Mexico and it's drug war is a side show of little strategic importance, But for Americans it is of higher importance because it is a US neighbour and a significant proportion of their population is mexican

haha very funny, the reason why Somalia experienced all that turmoil its because of it Lucrative Geographic position that even the Soviets and US were competing over during the cold war. Sorry to disappoint you man but Somalia is currently recovering at faster rate and its reclaiming its territorial seas rights against its neighbours Kenya and forcing commercial ships that carry your personal wants and needs to pay its due license taxes to access the red sea, that's something that didn't happen 3 years ago but its happening now. By 2020 Somalia will gain its former glory as Africa most advanced nation. Oh I almost forgot about the exploration and drilling for Oil that's going on now.

  • @shinpads3453

Well Somaliland its a different story, they trying their best separate themselves from Somalia but little do they know its a futile attempt, they still rely heavily on Somalia, in terms of funds and trade, they haven't succeeded in being an independent recognised nation for 24 years while turmoil was rife in Somalia. They simply are trying to divide the nation like north Korea and south Korea, however their barren infertile lands makes it harder for them to self cultivate and self sustain agriculturally however Somalia can self sustain agriculturally because of the rivers that run through the country. Also china has recently signed a contract with Somalia to explore for oil in its seas and land in puntland region in the north. Well I believe in time Somaliland will drop its ridiculous state independence aspirations when they witness Somalia fast development. I commend Somaliland for their efforts to create a separate nation to avoid being sucked in to the chaos that rest of Somalia had. As for Al Shabab they have been driven out, they are but a small terrorist group, they have no real base Somalia and they are currently on the run and close to surrendering, in fact everyday few Al shaba fighters are surrendering to government of Somalia. Its a matter of time they are wiped out completely, hopefully within this year. We have now united the territories under Al shabab, they are now hiding in mountains and forest bushes fights for survival.

Me thinks that the prospect of climate change might be as much a boon to ruggedly high Ethiopia as it is a challenge. Ponder a dreaded sea level rising and inundating coastal settlements around the globe. Ethiopia encompasses the extensive Danakil depression, which is as much as 500 ft. below sea level. The Danakil was sea floor in the past, a part of the Red Sea. The only thing that is holding back the Red Sea now is a couple of low rising hills on the coast, volcanic eruptions which cut off the sea in geologic scale of time. Either another volcano blows up the top of these hills or thermal expansion of sea water (climate change) breaches the coastline and inundates the Danakil. Imagine the finest harbor in the entire continent. (Africa has a long coastline, but few harbors.) This is not as wild as one might think.

Yes the Ogden region was annexed by Ethiopian or shall I say British gave them to create never ending divide and conquer style of European colonists. first was late 19 century Harar reagion ( with the help of Russians who came to help Ethiopian Italian war than 1946 dirirdhabe region and the land between dirirdhabe and Djibouti (french handed over to the Ethiopian king) than by 1948 western Ogaden ( by the British) than 1958 reserve area or north east of Ogaden ( by the British) . the reason Europeans were given Somali land little by little was because Somali people were always tough Fighters so they don't want hand over the whole region in one time and than all of these Somali will fight at once. Ethiopian can not survive on year with out European support but Somalia can. even with out central government Somalia is rebuilding and Somali people live better than majority of Ethiopians. God bless Somalia we will regain our lost land again.

shuni nishu Somalia was never“colonized”, they signed treaties with the Italians and the Italians built many things for somalis. To this day somalis and Italians have good relationships.Djibouti wasn’t just Somali, it was afars too. As for Ethiopia , they won first against the Italians (Russian support) 139K Ethiopians vs 18k Italians but lost the second time in 1936 and were actually colonized. Don’t make up history.

@Stratfor I am (not speaking from any religious point of view) interested in history & your analysis of Geo-politics. The civilization of Kush in Ethiopia was the root of all Semitic civilizations (i.e Arabs, Jews, Carthage etc) now there are still people in Ethiopia & Northern Kenya who regard themselves as part of this ethnic tradition. Could not a pressure value in the Palestinian Israeli conflict be released by re-settlement of Israeli settlers to Kush region the original Semitic homeland.

Somalia almost conquered all of Ethiopian land, until we were within 1 day distance away of conquering their capital Addis Abba and swallowing Ethiopia as a whole, if it weren't for the communists the soviet union and its 5 other nation allies, it was a justified war too, we were trying to free our own Somali people, but I guess it wasn't meant to be, luckily for Ethiopia.

lol, go read some history about the conflicts between Ethiopia and Somalia, the population of the majority of ogaden are Somali people. Also Ethiopia many times tried conquer Somalia to have access to the sea but couldn't because when it war Somalia has always beaten its enemies, while Ethiopia has always enlisted the help of other nations. Greater Somalia is actually 4 times larger than Somalia now. So stay cooped up in the land and don't even dream of having to the sea.

  • @shinpads3453

If the ogaden were an Ethiopian land for a millenia then why is it that the indigenous people that live on those lands are Somali people, who speak who have Somali traditions and culture, why is it that majority are Somali people? Also Somali people don't work for other countries and we don't consider ourselves as arab people but Somali Africans. We also are protecting our coastline and territorial seas from the Kenyans who wish to expand their coastlines into Somalia but cannot and from commercial ships who used dump their toxic waste into our shores but don't anymore because of the heavy fine they if do so ever again, in fact they cannot pass through to the red sea without paying license tax to Somalia. Our coasts are fine and safe, the biggest danger is Ethiopia because peace in Somalia does not benefit Ethiopia after all. It was Ethiopia that collaborated with other countries such as Portugal who they askes to send a naval armada led by vasco de gama son, luckly his navy lost against somalia in the indian ocean and he lost his life in battle against the somalian navy in the 14th century. Ethiopia also worked with colonial powers when they were carving up Africa in exchange for European privileges lol. Ethiopia is the last African nation to trust, they have no sense of loyalty towards their fellow, african brothers, history shows that they betrayed Africa before whose to stop them from doing again in the future.

***** It is strange how Ethiopia always claims to be pro Africa and it is people and presents it self as a pan Africa nation, and on the the other hand Ethiopia collaborated with the Europeans in the partition of Africa. The Ogaden Desert was given to Ethiopia by Britain, the final part of the Ogaden was given to Ethiopia by Britain in the 1950,s. In the 1977 Ogaden war with Somalia, Ethiopia was helped by the former USSR and Cuba and some Communist Arab nations like Yemen physically by sending troops and arms to help Ethiopia to hold on the Ogaden after Ethiopia lost it to Somalia in just couple of days. Again Ethiopia collaborating with non Africans. The African Union headquarters should move out from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and move to another true African capital like Abuja,Accra, Kampala or Khartoum. The Ogaden was never part of Ethiopia, The landscape and the climate of the Ogaden specially rain wise is very different from Amharic, Tigray and even most of Oromo regions. Therefore the Ogaden was never inhabited by highland Ethiopians. Ethiopian claim on The Ogaden is wrong.

***** By the way The Ogaden desert is low land area, while real Ethiopia is high land and mountainous area. They are totally different in many ways, in landscape in climate in everything. How can the Ogaden belong to the high land Ethiopia. If you look at the rest of Somalia and the Ogaden they look exactly the same, they are on the same hight above sea level.

EXPANDING UNIVERSE IN HOLY QURAN SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE OF HOLY QUR'AN We have built the heaven with might, and We it is who make the vast extent (thereof) (Qur'an,51:47) (Marmaduke Pickthall) " and the heaven We constructed it with strength, and indeed, We are expander". (Qur'an,51:47) With power and skill did We construct the Firmament: for it is We Who create the vastness of pace. (Yusf Ali) Expanding of the universe is mentioned in Holy Qur'an very clearlyabout 1400 years ago. Scientists claim that it was discovered first time in 1929 but it is not a fact. We find little more explanation in ancient commentary of this verse. Therefore this claim is not acceptable. Of course Edwin Hubble has explained the expansion brilliantly by help of his telescope. In 1929 He came to know that the universe is expanding. Edwin Hubble brilliantly tried to explain the expansion but it may be correct or may not. In future scientists may differ with his explanation. Almighty Allah created the universe. Something never came from nothing and it can't !! The mankind know very little about the universe. Who can claim 1400 years ago that the universe is expanding?! The mankind has to believe in Almighty Allah and Mohammad as the last prophet of Allah. It is in his own broader interests. Almighty Allah Says in Qur'an: " Soon will We show them Our Signs in space and in their own selves, untill it becomes manifest to them that He (Almighty Allah ) is the Truth ." (Qur'an, 41:53) In fact, many of the scientific miracles mentioned in the Holy Qur'an have been discovered only recently, through the modern highly advanced telescopes like Hubble telescope. Those scientists who reject the faith in Almighty Allah , are wrong. " How can ye reject The faith in Allah? -- Seeing that ye were without life , and He gave you life ; Then will He cause you to die , and will again bring you life; And again to Him wiil ye return . ( Qur'an , 2 : 28 ) Knowledge of mankind about the universe is too limited. Science is not advanced. Scientists can't reject the the existence of Almighty Allah.
