I was an extra in "The Newton Boys" in the late 1990s. I'll never forget how, after a long day of filming, Ethan Hawke led the cast and crew in a round of applause directed at the extras. A class act.

Ethan Hawke has always been (in my opinion) underappreciated in many ways. Seeing his love and passion for not just the craft of acting, but for the entire ecosystem of the creative arts is an amazing thing to see. I think he is definitely the perfect choice for the project. I'm a bit young to have had the whole Newman experience growing up, but listening to Ethan talking about it all has me excited to see what he put together and learn more about that era. 😍

Ethan Hawke will always be that young 20-something actor that I had a massive crush on as a teen. First on Dead Poets Society, then Reality Bites, then Gattaca and later on as we both got older, in the Before Sunrise series. So it always feels interesting to see the actors, who you always had a certain image of, age and evolve into someone almost completely different. But he's always been more of an indie-type of creative actor than a big blockbuster-type one. And that is always why we hear him working on different kinda offbeat projects rather than big Hollywood blockbuster ones. I never thought he would go down this road as he got older but I must say it's interesting and he's aging creatively and gracefully and I appreciate him for it!

I have to confess: I don't think I have ever reacted to another beautiful human (and there have been so many) being the way Paul Newman's refined and handsome sexuality threw me into a dithering tizzy. It was difficult to watch Sweet Bird of Youth without gasping like an idiot. How can an image on a screen evoke such a gut-punch of a response? I'm embarrassed to say all this, but perhaps it's right to remember just what a beautiful proponent of his craft he was -- in every way. wow.

Throughout my life, I was enormously lucky to count Paul Newman and his brother Arthur as friends. They were two of my greatest mentors and two of the finest, most decent, most loyal, most giving, most witty, most dependable, most enjoyable men to be around I've ever known. I miss them both very much, and miss them together even more. Being significantly younger than both of them I watched how they lived and treated people. What a wonderful way to recreate the destroyed recordings; what a wonderful way to document the joy of the craft in celebration of the people making up a community of actors who wholeheartedly threw themselves into the serious art of breathing life into someone else's words, ideas, dreams, opinions. . . Gore Vidal was right: Newman and Woodward were the last movie stars; such diligent proponents of their craft that Ethan Hawke's energy and respect for them is infectiously inspiring. Can't wait to see the documentary. Much respect. x

He still likes to take chances. He's a man in his fifties, has a long and stable career but he needs some risks. So he worked with Paul Schrader ( underestimated as a director but not as a screenwriter), he diversified his craft, he grew up. It shows really.

When I was in high school over spring break my sister went to Los Angeles for the week. And I spent all of this time staying up really late mostly because I missed her. And all of a sudden at age 16 a movie comes on and I'm fascinated. When it's over I asked my mother if she knows who the actor is and she said Paul newman. I said the salad dressing guy?? From that point it became my mission to watch every movie of his that I could ever find. And I did. I watched 47 Paul Newman films before I was 25 years old. So in less than 10 years I watched that many films. But this was before Netflix before Google before the internet. I would go to the library and look up things on Lexus nexus. And then I would go through the TV guide and circle upon Newman film and I would literally program my VCR if I wasn't able to watch it.

Ethan Hawke fan here, the dude can do it all, great realist as a person, type a guy that knows his shit stinks no matter being born on camera, his real of a person never left him. He can actually be as Tom Cruise, and go toe to toe with him in acting as anything and go our the front door get in his truck or car wave and talk to people while Tom Cruise sneaks out the back doesnt want to be bothered by his fans, ive witness this myself. So take note of this actor people he has a file of movies he's made with some of the greatest actors ever and the guy acts like the dog walker you see every day that waves at ya, historic this man is.

I binged watched this docu series on HBO Max yesterday, it was hard to walk away from for 30 mins without caving to the pull to go back and keep watching. I loved and hated it at the same time - loved the people and stories, hated the back and forth clips and jumps in timeliness and narration of transcripts by other actors. But then loved that the actors and writers that voiced lines had their own personal connections to Paul and Joanne and reasons for participating. Interesting project by Ethan.

My son and I had a great conversation just today about the difference between today’s social media stars vs those that have a grit and love for the art. Don’t get me wrong, there are those who are now famous from their social media content that do honor the craft itself but most are simply trying to build a brand. Longevity happens with quality and character.

OK, seriously? Wow! What a fascinating conversation. And, within the limits of the format, Stephen let Ethan speak with very few interruptions. Ethan Hawke is passionate about his project, passionate about what he repeatedly calls “the craft of acting”, which makes him a very interesting person, I completely get why Paul & Joanne’s daughter thought of him. Can’t wait to watch this documentary, Zoom or not.
