I’m 65. This is a great movie. The quote “One must forgive the times one lives in,” hit me. I’m not sure I can forgive this present time of irrationality, lunacy, and the suicidality of Western life. Seeing British society in this movie broke my heart.

What a shocker. That really was American actress Arleen Dahl beauty mark and all. I kept thinking GB must have created their own version as her British accent was impeccable, and her acting ability was far superior to that breathy sex kitten B rated studio junk her studio usually stuck her with. Such a shame she was never given a American opportunity to show us and develop her true talent. Thanks for the good film.

Personal life:- JACK HAWKINS: Hawkins married actress Jessica Tandy in 1932, and the couple divorced in 1940. Together, they had one daughter, Susan Hawkins (1934-2004). In 1947, Hawkins married former actress Doreen Lawrence (1919-2013), and they remained married until his death in 1973. Doreen, upon marrying Jack gave up acting completely to became a housewife and mother to raise their family: Together, they had three children, Caroline (b. 1955), Andrew (b. 1950), and Nicholas. Death In May 1973, Hawkins had an experimental operation on his throat to insert an artificial voice box. He started haemorrhaging and was admitted to St Stephen's Hospital, Fulham Road, London, forcing him to drop out of The Tamarind Seed (1974), in which Hawkins was to have played a Russian general. He died on 18 July 1973, of a secondary haemorrhage. He was 62. His final appearance was in the television mini-series QB VII. His autobiography, " Anything for a Quiet Life ", was published after his death. He was cremated and his ashes interred at Golders Green Crematorium in North London.

There were $4 to a British Pound in the 1950s, so that's about $120,000 then, now worth about 1.4 million dollars.

@@patricksullivan4329 Still, that was an awfully big mansion. A lot of woodwork, nice furniture and artwork. I think it would have been worth a hell of a lot more than that.

@@aspenrebel It was a completely different economy then. For one thing, art wasn't worth anything like today. And as someone else pointed out mansions were being sold off for a song thanks to the 90% marginal tax rates. The British people voted for socialism in 1945 after WWII. They got what they wanted; good and hard.

I'm too busy feasting my eyes on all the beautiful props: silver serving pieces, grandfather clocks, ornate furniture, fireplaces, etc.

@@2msvalkyrie529 Actually my parents were born in 1920 & 1911-and they told me things from the past, they don't show in Agatha Christie. This is a script-they had to be nice to get shown in Cinema's. Read some Bio's from the past-the sex, crime, suicide, women poisoning family members, pill popping.

I don’t understand the ‘ pass the sugar scene ‘… why was that line even added ?

The "sugar" bit served no purpose I can detect. Lots of quirky, incongruous moments in this little film. Fun watch, nonetheless. 😊

The story is interesting, but to me the music is exaggerated, overwrought, and in many places inappropriate for what's happening on the screen.
