I recently bought the same Etchr sketchbook to try. After several watercolor paintings, some with pen and ink, and some watercolor studies in it, I do think it’s pretty good. The only problem I had with it, is the watercolor paint doesn’t seem to move much in a wet on wet wash and I didn’t like that. But all in all a good watercolor sketchbook. I will buy again.
I just wanted to tell you THANK YOU for all of your AMAZING videos! I have learned more in the last 20 minutes of watching just a fraction of some of your videos than I have in the past 20 years of watching how to draw videos. (Trust me, it has been a LOT of videos) So thank you again for learning your gift and giving it away to the world. You are truly a beacon in such a uncertain world.
Thank you, your review is so exhaustive and I like your drawings and paintings SO MUCH !
Wow, I am really into some of the sketches you showed here! I love the street scene just painted with the ultramarine/burnt sienna wash; it really brings the focus to the line drawing and also the beauty of the wash. I also love the fruit, the kitchen items, and the abstracted tree branches near the end. I would love to see a flip through of your recent books!
I've never seen this brand of sketchbook before, it looks like it's really great quality!
Great review! Love the blends and granulation!
I find the cold press paper too rough. But I like the hot press. It's a nice book to hold and use. My black cat's fuzz sticks to the cover!
Thank you for your very exhaustive review. I like your drawings and paintings very much !
Hello! Thank you for making this video! It just made my day & it’s making me feel a bit better as well😊💝
Thanks Teoh. I like this sketchbook. Of the ones I've tried I like this one best.
Been waiting for this to appear :D thank you!
Great timing! I just ordered mine the other day and they’re arriving today.
Useful to have your review. I’ve tried both hot and cold press. I don’t like them but I can’t say exactly why. I do find the cold press has more tooth than I like. Stonehenge Aqua remains my favorite. But paper is a such a personal choice.
Even your swatches look really good on this.
Thanks! I have this one and have been afraid to use it. Now, I can!
That's a very cool watercolor sketchbook.
Thank you Teoh , great review , I find the quality of the paper looks really nice but for the price I don’t think I’m good enough to get this yet xoxo
pretty nice sketchbook, the sketch looks nice too, the paper seems adaptable to different mediums
You are very good at introducing tools, which is really important, I am always looking for the one-size-fits-all tool, which is good habits.
Great review. I think the comparisons to Arches and Fabriano would have been better if the same pigments were used on the Etchr. Since different pigments and binders behave differently, and the ones on the non-Etchr look like they may have been granulating, the appearance of the cross-strokes would be different. In the Etchr sample, you can also see the effect of water running down through the lower cross-strokes, which makes it seem the paper elevation, timing, or wetness was different. All these things must be a pain to account for across reviews! If you have interest, maybe you can add a test to the blog version of this review that uses the other paints. Thanks as always, Teoh!
i have four of these sketchbooks and it's definitely not as good as arches or their perfect sketchbook line, i feel as though the paints aren't as vibrant here and the granulating paints also don't granulate as much compared to when you try it on other papers. even the hannemuhle watercolor book shows the full potential of granulating paints, but on this paper, not so much. what i just like about their regular etchr sketchbook line is that it's slightly cheaper and it's still cotton, and it lays fully flat once dry even when you used a lot of water.
Ooh pause at 6:13 6:35 the botanical is quite new..you should do more; looks beautiful
Hey Teoh nice work out there. Can you do a video especially when sketching on kraft or toned brown papers and how would the art style change and it's difference to the usual traditional white papers. Thanks!
Hi Teoh ! Thank you for sharing this. I was wondering which nib you found more comfortable to use with this Sketchbook. I used TWSBI, and Lamy Extra Fine nibs and it was a bit scratchy. Happy to hear what your recommendation is. Thank you
Thanks Teoh - another great review! I have this sketchbook, and like it, but the page marker ribbon left an indentation on two of the pages which, of course, shows up when watercolor is applied, and distorts that area of the painting. I wish companies would stop including these ribbons, as they are not useful to me, and now two sketchbooks I own have pages damaged by these ribbons. Paul Rubens' pink sketchbook is the other. I contacted Paul Rubens company about this and, while they were very nice and gave me a partial refund, they didn't seem very interested in changing their sketchbooks. It's a shame because, due to this, I will not be purchasing either of these sketchbooks in the future, even though I like the paper in both very much.
I have several of Etchr sketchbooks and i love them. Thank you for sharing:)
I've ordered the sample pack so we'll see how I like it
Great review, I have been wondering about these and wondering if they are worth the price. They have a 50% cotton block out now, I would love to see a review on that!
Thank you for the review and reccomends! I never realized the Ecthr sketchbook came in a bundle. 🤣 I was always confused as to why they were so much more expensive than other 100% cotton journals. Have you ever tried the Mossery 100% cotton journals? I cannot find a good review and I am curious about them because an employee at the big box craftstore mentioned them.

I’ve not tried Mossery. But I’ve tried Strathmore writing pad which uses 100% cotton too and the paper quality is indeed very good
I was curious about how easy it is to keep the white cover clean. It looks like yours has one noticeable spot on the front where many you dropped it or something. I am afraid it will get dingy looking after being handled and traveling around a lot.

It will get dirty eventually especially if you use it outdoors
Great review! I heard another artist (Fiona Di Pinto) say that the paper in etchr books is made by Fabriano
@amortlepsg

The Perfect Sketchbook is made with Fabriano paper, the white ones are made with Baohong according to their official Amazon seller

Actually only The Perfect Sketchbook Signature Series is made with Fabriano. The regular Perfect Sketchbook with the grey cover is not. Check their website!
Can we use masking fluid on this sketchbook?

You should be able to.
Hi Teoh - Cold press cotton paper is better suited for water coloring but for a line sketch with water proof ink the surface is rough. Where as hot press cotton paper is soft and better for line sketches but not so good for water color (since it can not absorb much water and paper folds). What is the best strategy for - Ink and water color (wash) sketching ?
@teohyc

Just get hotpressed gummed pads and there won't be warping with water. Hotpress is better for details and drawing.

@@teohyc Thanks ! Any products you can suggest ?
Thank you so much for the review? Btw. do you know if the paper is acid-free? I saw a review on amazon mentioning it apparently isn't and that the drawings became less vibrant over time but I'm not sure if that could be trusted.

Paper is acid free
Great review. I have been eyeing on this but I wonder if Etchr white sketchbook can handle several washes considering it’s not 300 gsm or 140 lb paper. I can’t afford their Perfect sketchbook being sold in bundle, so I am wondering about this particular sketchbook. Thank you.

FYI Blick just started carrying the perfect sketchbooks in singles!! I was so excited. I bought one right away. I’ve been wanting to try it for a long time but couldn’t commit to $120 for 3 of them (A5).

@@litylu thank you for the info. I just checked and they sell 6x8 for $40. That’s all I need just to try it. I wish Amazon will do it, too, since I am a prime member and I get free SH.

@@nanetteatienza4297 I agree. Maybe one day it’ll get there. For now it was too easy to find a few other supplies I needed to get to the $69 for free shipping :P
How does this compare with the Koval that you've used so much?
@teohyc
2 жыл бұрын
Koval is better since it's using the best paper from Fabriano.
How often do you go through watercolour pans or watercolour tubes? Love your KZread channel
@teohyc
2 жыл бұрын
Quite fast if I paint regularly. Paint with low tinting strength will get used up faster.
Can you compare to the Paul Rubens 100% cotton sketchbook? That one costs a fraction of the price
@kathyhackney7950
2 жыл бұрын
I have both. Paul Rubens is about 15 where Etchr is 28 for a similar size. So, about twice as much. I personally do enjoy using the Paul Rubens sketchbook. Quite a lot actually but ..it's not as vibrant as Etchr. I also like slightly thinner pages in my sketchbook but that's just preference. Paul Rubens dulls a lot when dry but it's still nice especially for a sketchbook imo
@teohyc
2 жыл бұрын
The dull colours could be due to the sizing. The paint may have gone into the paper rather than remain on the surface.
@amortlepsg
2 жыл бұрын
Paul Rubens is also less expensive because the number of pages is not the same : 40 for PR, 52 for Etchr

I just got my A5 from them yesterday and was instant love. Someone a few years ago had recommended to me Crescent sketchbooks. They are nice for markers but horrible with watercolour. I didn't like them.
