    I’m new to watercolor and only own 9 tubes of paint. But I did splurge on the micro Portable Palette and have New Gamboge, Hansa Yellow Lt., Phthalo blue GS, Fr. Ultramarine, Quinacridone red, and Burnt Sienna. The palette is great for travel and painting anywhere away from home! Thank you for sharing your choices. I came up with my original limited palette after watching a lot of your videos and Denise Soden’s 🎨 you both made the past year much brighter for me!

    Another 6 colour suggestion: Hansa yellow medium, Yellow ochre, Transparent pyrrol orange, Quin lilac, Phthalo blue (green shade), Indanthrone blue. Can mix just about any colour in the rainbow with this set. Quin lilac is a rather abnormal colour on its own but it's such a useful mixing colour - with the orange it makes radiant reds and a warm blue makes deep dark purples. Indanthrone is a wonderful non-granulating warm blue which neutralises with the orange to gorgeous greys and near black

    I made my own small palette box from balsa wood (usually used for model airplanes), coated with white paint and laquer. It's credit-card sized and contains nine colors (split primary + sapgreen + earth colors). It's not as practical as that small fold-out plastic palette, but it's very cute ;-)

    I have a very similar selection of colors for my portable painter micro! I also have a yellow, a red, two blues, yellow ochre and burnt sienna. For my “red” I chose a magenta, since I can mix it with some yellow if I need a true red in my painting. I agonized over which colors to add to my micro palette, so I was excited to see how similar our choices were. Your videos must have a bigger influence on me than I realized! Thanks!

    While it's true that a warm and cool version of the 3 primaries can make all the secondaries. It takes too much mixing to get the earth colors, lemon yellow and cerulean blue aren't versatile enough on their own. Together they make wonderful bright greens, but I'd rather have a yellow ochre, burnt umber, and Paynes gray. All great for fore grounds, buildings, trees, and shadows.

    I have the Micro pallete filledl with DS 6 color starter set. 3 cools shades 3 warm shades. 2 reds 2 blues 2 yellow. It is so fun to use and see what colors I can come up with. This is the pallet I go everywhere with most days ... just in case I have that opertunity. I like the yellow choices you have. Using a tan yellow is very helpful for more earthy colors. I do miss having sap green though. It is my safety/green color.

    Excellent video teoh. I have in mine as i live in uk these colours quin gold.... vermillion..ultramarine...burnt umber..raw sienna...cobalt blue. Now the cassart vermillion looks like a warm red in pan but can go cooler warm rose dilluted. And this has a pigment number pr242 which some call geranium red. This makes for a vibrant orange with quin gold and a very nice purple with ultramarine. But the best mix of all is ultra with the quin make stunning lively foilage green.

    I need to get that granulating cobalt. My 6 colors upset people since i use two browns but it gives purples, oranges and greens and best of all light and dark skin tones. I use nickel azo yellow, carmine, cobalt, phlalo blue green, transp red oxide and burnt umber. Nickel azo and carmine are completely neutral and can be used for warm and cool mixes. I do use that beautiful anthraq scarlet in my regular palette, im sad its going away. Almost forgot. I also squeeze a bit of potters pink in my mixing space for the granulation.

    I wonder how many rectangle quarter pans would fit into the micro mini? I find that 9 colors makes the perfect palette for me to use in the field. Always looking for a smaller palette with lots of mixing space. You do successful mixing on the paper but i don't seem to be able...maybe it is also a matter of my style being so different.

    I couldn’t survive with only 6 colors. I need bright purples and pinks, and greens. So at a minimum it’d have to be split primaries (maybe only 1 yellow?) plus yellow ochre and burnt umber. And id be missing convenience greens and purples. Mixing purples is hard, it all muds so fast. I agree with your blue choices, wonderfully versatile. Maybe Ultramarine instead of cobalt, but you did explain it. I don’t like granulation much except for specific times. Your yellow works really well for both warm and cool mixes too. But your purple choices have got to stink.

  • @RaphaelPowery

    @RaphaelPowery

    3 жыл бұрын

    Personally I find that synthetics maintain a point longer and snap back into shape on their own a little. Just remember to take good care of your brushes, dry them and fix them to a point yourself and not to dig at your watercolours with the point of the brush and try picking up pigment with the body/lower end of the brush closer to the ferrule. Edit: unfortunately brushes don't last forever but you can extend their use with good brush care.

    @@fidgetyhuman Princeton brushes are super nice, I have a size 6 Neptune quill and it works like a charm. I don't really use soaps on my watercolor brushes but for my oils I tend to use a good quality dish soap like Palmolive and warm water in the palm of my hand. If you're thorough and quick it'll do the job but don't try to put a whole lot of force into it or you'll damage the hairs especially if they're real. Synthetics can handle more abuse but it's good to be gentle either way.
