You should react to the F14 Tomcat, it's such a legendary plane. Also, an upside of the F-35 is its avionics and ability to be a support aircraft. It can detect threats before other aircraft and warn them, or it can actually guide OTHER plane's missiles to a target. It can basically be the lead plane in a formation and use the other planes in that formation as it's own personal weapons platform.

The F-22 and F-35 are very different aircraft. The F-35 is a multi role aircraft, while the F-22 is an air superiority fighter. The F-35 does many things very well. The F-22 is the best air to air combat plane in the world. Also, the Navy does not have the F-22. It was not designed for carrier based use.

The F-22 is the King of Air Supremacy. No fighter (at least no fighters in service yet) can match it's maneuverability and stealth (potentially even speed, but I'm not certain so I will hold that one back). The F-35 is amazing as a support aircraft (it can provide electronic warfare, it can bomb targets (F-22 last I checked cannot, at all), it can detect targets and tell others to engage it, and is a great way for a foreign nation to get into the 5th generation game without spending insane money. Reading the top comment currently, I now realize zklpr stated most of this already xD. This is why though in my opinion the F-35 is great, but ultimately a bad decision. While it's amazing to get so much crammed into one aircraft, it means you loose a lot when just one is destroyed. Sure there may be more F-35's around, but you just lost essentially three aircraft in one kill. Missiles are cheap, planes aren't (especially the more that they can do). I will always be a fan of dedicated aircraft doing their dedicated work (especially since you can purpose build it then, the F-35 is built for....everything and as such doesn't do it as well as a dedicated aircraft could - meanwhile if we look at something like the A-10 it's purpose is pure and simple, pound the targets on the ground to dust and survive.....THEN POUND IT SOME MORE) and occasionally straying into other's purview when needed.

The F-35 was basically a massive research and development program. All the best planes serve a singular purpose. The F-22 is an air superiority fighter and the A-10 is a close ground support fighter. The F-35 was built to be a jack of all trades. The F-35 has a special helmet with display information on the visor. It can also enable the pilot in certain modes to look through the plane and see what is beyond. On top of that, the tech of the F-35 can identify other aircraft in the sky and tell the pilot which planes are friendly and which planes are hostile. All of these things greatly increase the situational awareness of the pilot, and allow them to make better decisions in a combat situation more easily. As far as I know the F-35 is the only plane publicly in service that has those features. Most of the time this will rule over more agile and fast enemies and prevent a situation that would exploit the F-35s Maneuvering Energy Retention, as for a brief turn or two the F-35 can out turn most other fighters, and only becomes less agile if maneuvering continues.

So even if only a small percentage is actually adopted, the developments, or what is derived from them will go into the next gen of equipment. Or some of the really cool, expensive, maintenance intensive gear will be modified and implemented in small quantities for use by the top special forces groups, where they can afford the cost and maintenance of a small number of units sent to very specialized, highly trained people.

The MQ-25 also has another purpose outside your midway example. One trick some nations try to do in order to deal with Carriers like the US is using long range missiles to make it too dangerous to operate close and by making the carriers operate father means the less penetration you can do with your fighter wing. This drone is a way to work around that issue by acting as a hard to track fuel tank.

New can be great if it is made with fewer parts, but the more complex the system the more that can go wrong. In mechanics less equals more.

The F-35A has state of the art situational awareness, electronic warfare, radar, and stealth capabilities. The biggest difference between the F-22 and F-35, is that F-22’s are limited on the bombs they can carry. The F-35 is much cheaper in comparison to the F-22 and the air force version has dropped from almost 100 million dollars to 79 million dollars in price and is expected to still decrease in price as more are produced. During the “red flag” training event the F-35A achieved a 19-1 kill ratio even when there GPS and Coms were being jammed. The F-35A also was able to take out 49/51 of the simulated Anti aircraft sites. The F-35B according to former Gen Jon Davis achieved a 24-0 kill ratio against 4th generation fighter jets. F-35’s are always sharing data with other friendlies in air, sea and land. The fighter aircraft has some of the best jamming equipment there is, and is reportedly capable of working together as one to insure that the enemies passive radar cannot locate the source.

The F-35 is a multi role stealth aircraft. The F-22 is a fighter. In a dogfight, sure the F-22 might win. But in every other aspect, the F-35 can succeed greatly. The reason the US did this and spent so much, was to have a sort of one shoe fits all aircraft that they can mass produce. Also, the F-35 has better radar, and internal technology. So from a distance fight, the F-35 could pick up an F-22 and launch middles while an F-22 could not detect the F-35. But when they are close and in a visible dog fight, than the F-22 will win

The F-22 is stealthier than the F-35, that's well established. One of the biggest drawbacks of all that stealth though was no data link.
