    What isn't talked about is the fact that the enemy will not even know the F35 is watching and the missile that kills him may not come from that aircraft. It may come from another platform. This is the American advantage we have had since the F14 Tomcat and it's Phoenix missile. Enemy aircraft will find themselves under attack before they get in range with their own weapons. The battle will be over and the enemy may have never come in visual contact with our aircraft. Can you imagine going against a squadron of F35's. How would you begin to combat this disparity. The answer to that problem is "don't start a fight you can't possibly win".

    I completley appose free state sponsored healthcare. People abuse things that they get for free, US healthcare is cheaper than most other nations healthcare when you take into account 50% of what someone makes in Norway is taxed away and they have a 25% sales tax. US hospital systems have the fastest response then any other nations. A stint to save your life takes weeks to months in most nations, in the US its 58min average. People just aren't smart enough to set aside the correct money for insurance or finding the insurance. Remember the government excels as screwing everything up. The system isn't perfect but it's better then any other nation, if we could purchase health insurance across state lines, that would be a huge step in the right direction.

  • @kerblingtime

    Usually, external loads caused drag in addition to the weight. But the F-22s and F-35s have their weapons stored internally which makes it to where the only detriment from it's "full" load would only be the weight. The F-35 was made in the Joint Strike Fighter program (JSF) and was meant to be used by all the branches of the US military. The F-35A for the airforce, the F-35B (the VTOL version and most expensive) for the Marine Corps, and the F-35C (more durable landing gear, line hook, and larger and foldable wings). There are also some export variants but for the most part, there's a large interest in the F-35B as it allows amphibious assault ships to become full-blown aircraft carriers. The cost per plane is as low as around $90 million USD (for the F-35A) with the most expensive variant (F-35B) being around $117 million USD, but the cost continues to lower as production ramps up and more partners join in. The F-35 capabilities is crazy, it can perform CAS, Air-superiority, act as an AWS aircraft, Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses and/or Destruction of Enemy Air Defense, can help friendly aircraft boost their radar range, lock range, and control missiles, various ECM methods, to list a few. Future use of the F-35 is to be used with the new F-15X in which the F-35 would use the more than 2 dozen missiles on the F-15X as it's ammo and guide those missiles on target.

    From what I understand, since the F-14 was retired in 2006, the U.S. Navy has been trying to ask that they be updated with the new radar and tracking systems and returned to service because we no longer have any aircraft for air to air combat roles. The F-22 and F-35 are multi role fighters that are primarily used for air to ground missions with some limited air to air capabilities and less maneuverability.

    @@thenewgunnertrw2025 No longer have aircraft for air to air combat... i'm sorry what? The F-22 (and F-35) are air superiority fighters, they were primarily designed with air-to-air combat in mind. The Tomcat was an incredible piece of tech in the 70s and 80s, and it's hands down one of the coolest fighters ever made. But trying to imagine an F-14 attempting to compete with modern fighters is an extreme case of nostalgia-fog. The radar was groundbreaking (in the 70s but not now), the flight control systems are antiquated, and modern advancements in aero engineering have rendered sweep-wings pretty much useless. Couple that with the fact that the F-22 has supremely better instantaneous and sustained turn rates, that the F-14 lost a lot of its maneuverability at higher speeds, and that the F-14 had a ton of flight restrictions due to mechanical limitations, and you are rooting for a lost cause here (especially when we start thinking about combat operations at high altitude). Is the F-14 cool? Abso-fucking-lutely, its an icon. But they were retired for a reason. It's severely outdated in every department at this point.

    Hey Artur! It might be helpful to note that while the F35 is an incredible multi-purpose aircraft and is certainly powerful, the older F22 is actually the more expensive of the two. F35 can do more in general, but the F22 has a smaller radar cross-sectional area and is built for the explicit purpose of being unbeatable in air to air combat. F22 production stopped early because it is expensive as hell, and also so capable that building more would have been pointless b/c there are no threats that could ever hope to beat it - so congress said "why waste the money?" It's said that the F22 will never be sold outside the US, b/c were such a terrible political situation to arise, the F22 is our defense against a potential enemy F35.

Which it is, and the F35 is supposed to be the ultimate plane of our day so it should be no surprise that as a program it costs way more. USAF has begun ordering F-15 EX. Although it is not expected to be survivable against modern air defenses, the F-15 EX could serve in other roles such as homeland and airbase defense, enforcing no-fly zones against limited or no air defense systems, and delivering standoff munitions with the F-35 doing the targeting.

    16 years is when the contract was first put out for competition. The development started from there for 2 planes, the one that would become the F-35, and the Boeing entry that was not purchased. So the blueprints aren’t 16 years old. That’s when the base requirements were posted. The request for companies to build something that will do this. And 16 years is astonishingly short from pentagon requirements to operational service. Most modern jet fighters take around 15-20 years. The development competition alone is 3-4 years of that. Also worth noting that 2019 was the best business year in Lockheed’s history. 6 months in 2020 looks to top it. US Allies have been unexpectedly upping orders. Especially for the F-35b Vertical take off version. Japan, Australia and a few others are converting their Helicopter Carriers to full blown strike carriers with them. Alongside the F-35b’s they are also ordering a bunch of the V-22 Osprey’s.

    covrt - austin not saying your wrong on the problem part, honestly I don’t know how many problems it’s had recently. But on the 30 years ahead part, if that were true it would just be a drone :) And considering it’s been 16 years in production that only really gives it 14 years on that 30 years ahead. So basically half as much of a life span of some of our best fighter designs and airframes like the 14/15/16/18. Quick edit, for comparison... the F14 tomcat went through its production cycle in 18 months after Grumman won the bid. Which is an insane timeline.

    @MAS It's not superior in *every* way. The F-35 is designed as a multirole aircraft. The F-22 is a specialized air-to-air fighter. The F-35 is superior to the F-22 when it comes to ground attack roles.

The F-35 is outstanding of you want to shoot down other aircraft, outstanding if you want to blow up stuff on the ground, outstanding if you want to suppress enemy air defenses, outstanding at collecting intelligence, outstanding at providing situational awareness to other F-35s, and excellent at providing situational awareness to the rest of your air/land/sea forces. The F-22 ended production 10 years ago, we will never build any more, and has little ability to be upgraded. The F-35 entered production 10 years ago, will be in production until 2037, and is going to constantly be upgraded over the next few decades

  • @SpearM3064

    @SpearM3064

    @MAS That depends entirely on the role. The F-22 is intended as a dedicated interceptor, while the F-35 is a multirole aircraft. For a Combat Air Patrol (CAP)? The F-22 is better. The F-22 isn't even really designed to carry air-to-ground weaponry. Two JDAM guided bombs is its usual maximum. (It can carry four bombs at the cost of all its air-to-air missiles.) The F-35, when carrying external weapons, can carry six bombs and *still* carry four anti-aircraft missiles. So for Close Air Support and light bomber roles, the F-35 is better. Also, there's only 187 Raptors, and they can't operate off of carriers; they need fixed air bases. The F-35B (VTOL) and F-35C (Navy) can both operate off carriers.

    It isn't. The F-35 may not be as stealthy or maneuverable, but it doesn't need to be. Its electronics, sensor suite, and battlefield awareness put it miles ahead of the F-22- especially when attacking targets on the ground. An F-35's helmet literally allows the pilot to see through the fuselage. Bonus- we can build more F-35s. We can't replace F-22s.
