I feel badly knowing she had trouble remembering her lines and Rue McClanahan said before taping she would virtually disappear from everyone and go into a mild depression from all the pressure. You never would know that in a million years from her brilliant performance as Sophia. She embodied that character completely

@@flav2689 “She had an awful time remembering lines because she would freeze, she panicked,” McClanahan wrote. “She would start getting under a dark cloud the day before tape day. You could see a big difference in her on that day. By tape day, she was unreachable. She was just as uptight as a human being can get.” The panic overshadowed Getty so strongly she wasn’t able to focus on learning her lines. She was, according to McClanahan, so completely encased in the feeling of fear that she asked for her lines to be written out on cards. The cast was horrified by her request. “Finally, she asked for cue cards,” wrote the former Maude star, “which appalled us all, and at first the producers refused to stoop to such an unprofessional thing. But eventually, she had to be given cue cards for those deliciously funny Sophia stories.”

Barbara Mowrey Rue McClanahan was the youngest. At the beginning of the show Rue was 51, Betty 63, Bea 63 as well and Estelle was 62 when the show started. So Estelle however was more than 15 years younger than her character!

    8 жыл бұрын

+Timothy Verheyn Jr. Yes, but you said Cagney And Lacey was "before your time" - which was the reason you gave for not knowing about it or not watching it. But GG is before your time too (as you said). So your reason for not knowing about Cagney and Lacey as this show was "before your time" is invalid as that, in itself, is not a block for you to know about things "before your time", as you know about GG and that is "before your time" too. Forgive me. I have a lot of time on my hands right now. 😛

Love all the women from the Golden Girls. Estelle was so great. Poor Joan. This show didn't last long. Her husband fought constantly with the execs and they cancelled it. Johnny Carson got so mad at her for doing the show and then her husband killed himself. Joan has been thru the mill

Matthew Forsythe yeah shame on Carson he should've supported her. The problem with Fox is they were having problems gaining affiliate clearance to carry her show. Many wouldn't based on principle that they were devoutly loyal to Johnny Carson, especially the local affiliate in Omaha. Plus Fox hadn't completed several purchase deals from independent stations to make the conversion. So in all, Joan got screwed.

Yeah because women in Hollywood have to deal with a lot of BS. They're held to way higher beauty standards than men, given fewer roles, paid less than their male co-stars, suffer poor writing quality (as most writers are men who lack the talent of writing for women,) etc. However this is changing. The ground is rumbling. I know for a fact (based on who is in college and other factors) that the next generation will have way more female producers, writers and directors. Therefore women will be treated much better in the industry. They won't be put out to pasture at 36. They won't be expected to remain emaciated to be given speaking roles. There will be more roles, better roles, and equal pay for women in Hollywood. Just you wait.
