It does look great without one. I've always loved the look of the Bongo. I have a pearl pickguard on mine and I really really don't like it... but I also don't want all black or white... perhaps I can just pull the guard off? :D

I don’t really know how to describe it, but although it doesn’t necessarily have a stingray sound, it does have a Musicman sound (if that makes any sense) Either way, it sounds fantastic to me and I quite like the futuristic looks. The mahogany is a big plus imo.

Great review of a great bass. I had a Bongo H/H four string years ago and I didn't bond with it but the tone of that Bongo 5 is killer in every way. It really is amazing the difference in tone just a few centimetres makes with respect to pickup placement.

Dude, nice video 🤘 Bongos are special basses. I owned one briefly and what makes it such a killer bass is why I wound up selling it - the EQ was too powerful and not the Music Man I was used to (which you call out perfectly). I spent too much time messing with it! When I pick up a Stingray or Sterling it is almost always plug and play. In the right hands, the Bongo is such a killer bass. Love EBMM gear.

No offense, this isn’t a “high end bass”. It’s an average bass. Calling this high end is an affront to Fodera, Elrick, Alembic, MTD, Dingwall (Canadian), etc etc etc. Thats not to suggest it’s not good, it’s just nowhere near high end. It’s like calling a Toyota a high end car.

I have the 2019 BFR Bongo in Wild Cherry Burst. Picked it up used and even so, it was virtually untouched except for flatwounds which I was going to put on it anyway. The thing I didn't like was it doesn't have the half moon fret markers. Other than that I absolutely adore the bass. Ash body, Roasted maple figured neck, an absolute masterpiece. Your 2020 is no slouch either. The one thing I wonder about is do the Bongo purists hate our basses since they aren't basswood and painted necks. I also wonder is there a difference in tone because of the non-basswood bodies of these BFRs. Perhaps the Lobster could get down to testing this question of tone?

I’ve got the 2008 Bongo Bass Wine red‼️✨🎸 ..and it is killer sounding!! But,..It is also a Mutant version of the Ernie Ball Stingrays. There’s that MusicMan distinction in tone but not quite the clarity of a Stingray. The Bongo can cover tho’ if one is in a pinch for that MusicMan tone for recording or live!! They ARE powerful Basses and can get you where ya wanna be on ANY Amp for most Genres!! Looks can be deceiving with the Bongo,..as in type of color/hue used. Natural Stains or Glittery Type Paint Schemes seem to pop on them and enhances the BMW inspired body design..(flat paint colors,..not so much huh?)…and feel good in your hands to me.(..slung low or choked-up via Guitar Strap..) Sizing it up for your best feel of control & playability with your strap is highly recommended to be done if you want to get the best experience playing a Bongo. Most don’t consider this fact when trying one out at a Music Store or borrowing from an owner. Anyway,..things depend on which experience it will be for a first-time player. If you’re already a MusicMan owner,..you’ll know it’s a whole other Beast of Bass!!…if it’s your 1st time,..the clean tight tones and controllable “Boom” of Bottom will work it’s way into your Heart with a quickness!! I dont know much about the Bongo other than the usual of bass players either or viewers either loving it or hating it!... I'd like to ask a question & though it may seem stupid to those in the know but as i've said i dont know anything about these guitar's & i (out of the blue) pulled out my ernie ball musicman sabre bass guitar & i was wondering if this was along the lines sounds wise or completely different?.. I haven't picked up or played my bass guitar in a very long time & a few bass guitar's have caught my eye but as bassists know all to well anyone of them who buys a high end model of any brand of bass guitar will tell you , They Ain't Cheap... If different i'd aporeciate any information on how the Sabre & Bongo differ as i think the Bongo may be on a different sound path!.. In light of this still ongoing coronavirus and its variants stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world... .....

Now dilemma for me I have a chance of buying 2nd hand a Bongo H for around £1200 or a 2008 Stingray HH for £1100 . I'm torn. I love the Stingray. Had one about 25 years ago . Also had G&L L2000 also loved that . Personally I don't think I'm of a Hugh enough standard to get away with the looks of the Bongo. Stay safe. Thanks again .Stu

I have found a single humbucker bongo for 1500 dollars. Do you think I should jump on the deal or go for the two humbucker version? I have a stingray special 5 HH that completely blows my fender American special jazz bass away. The bongo H I’m looking at is a four string. Will I be as impressed with it as I am my stingray? I can get the bongo HH in may when it becomes available. To be honest I think my Tony Franklin blows the American special away

Make sure to pause immediately and spin the 360° to the kid playing the bass I'm looking for. Anyone find any specs on this thing, let me know. It's kind of the 7 grail for me, so far nothing has been displacing it. Plenty of contenders for the 6 string slot in my rack (I promised myself to keep one fretted and one fretless bass in each category until I have a space built out to store that many things properly) and I'm considering selling my Heartfield DR5 fretless (reverse blueburst/chrome hardware, carbon fiber neck) and Peavey unity PJ 4 (red, maple/poplar/rosewood through body, black hardware) but man it's hard to let either of them go without something I really like better in hand, but right now I can't afford to replace them unless the others go first. So I wait. Other guitars come and go but either of these might not again. And I would probably sell/trade them both plus a kidney and a lung for that unicorn ESPer 7 this kid is wielding... kzread.info/dash/bejne/i2lrs9qEp6e5Z9Y.html

I just realized that Steve's bass is running Nordstrand 6 string pickups. That's actually sort of interesting...if you could get a set of electronics that you like that's consistent across platforms, including extended range, then it takes the parts number count in your personal stash down a bit as well as create knowledge useable transparently across platforms as well...less experimentation brings more broadly usable results... kzread.info/dash/bejne/eJZ7xpdxe8vglLA.html

As soon as I get them tuned up to my standards as a technician, I am definitely selling my *TWO* Fender Bassman 1200S (yes, *that* 1200S, the Sunn with the improved thermal management) because now that I know more I realize I bought these more for the preamp than anything - they actually house a pair of 12AX7 tubes with that great Sunn solid state power section, which to me is nearly as legendary as my unicorn Jazz Chorus 200 head which I am NEVER getting rid of. These. I will be looking to turn them into something like maybe an older Ashdown head or if I can score a Rivera TBR-2 I don't think I'll need another amp for a while. Fender makes all the old amp documentation available on their site. This also goes for heartfield basses....I *MIGHT* let go of my '92 DR-5 as stated in above comments but it is somehow hard to replace a fretless 5, especially one that I simply love holding so much it's hard to stop playing it...it's a bit low on heft for me, even though I know that everyone else likes light instruments I think it's actually the carbon fiber laminated neck that's throwing me. It's got a big ol flat wide neck and doesn't EVEN want to start diving because the neck is partially CF which weighs jack shit compared to maple. If I close my eyes, I can just barely feel where the frets are filled in by what looks like sanded down brass shims instead of epoxy or veneers like most conversions. It came with nice flats on it so I just let it ride. It's hella fun to play. support.fender.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002388866-SUNN-Guitar-and-Bass-Amplifier-Owner-s-Manuals The sunn Legacy... In early 1963, a band from Oregon called “The Kingsmen” hit the charts with a catchy little tune called Louie Louie. The Kingsmen quickly became household names and Louie Louie the rock anthem of the decade. With a hit single under their belt, The Kingsmen soon found themselves embarking on a 50 state national tour. One of the first things bassist Norm Sundholm discovered was that his bass amp, while fine for hops and school dances, did not have the power necessary for the larger concert halls to which the band had ascended. To solve this dilemma, Norm enlisted the help of his brother Conrad and by 1964 the brothers Sundholm had designed the world’s first high powered concert bass amplifier. 1965 saw the demand for the Sundholms’ amplifiers increase to the point that the family garage would no longer serve as a suitable manufacturing facility. Thus, the SUNN Musical Equipment Company was born. As the years passed, countless pioneers of rock would rely on SUNN amplifiers to carry the weight. The Who, Moody Blues, Cream, Steppenwolf, Kiss, Rush, Queen and a little music festival in up-state New York all endorsed SUNN equipment. Today, your new SUNN amplifier embodies this rich tradition and combines it with a vision for the future ensuring this American institution known for big sound will continue to be heard. Congratulations on your purchase of a sunn® 1200s Bass Amplifier. Built with care and special attention to detail, your new sunn 1200s Bass Amplifier offers much more than meets the eye. Each 1200s bass amplifier is crafted from the finest components available and assembled at the Sunn amplifier factory in Corona, California, USA. Hehe Pinky is very special. Honestly, it's the most "middle of the road" Stingray I have in terms of tone. The classics get the classic tone, but don't sound modern at all. The bongos sound modern, but can't get the classic tone. The SR Special HH with the new preamp sits right in the middle and has some really nice tonal headroom.

I've always hated the Bongo with a burning passion. It's one of the fugliest basses ever designed (and, taking into consideration how much of an eyesore Bangle-era BMWs are, especially the puke-inducing E65 7-series, it's not much of a surprise) and, what's worse, I've tried several early ones and they all SUCKED. All were dead as a doornail. But, to my surprise, yours sounds much better. Actually, it sounds great. It may be the result of different woods used in this one, or maybe they just tweaked the overall construction over the years and made it simply a better bass. And, probably thanks to the finish and lack of pickguard, it doesn't look as horrible as the standard ones. I still wouldn't want one but at least it's a good instrument.
