I've got a BFR Bongo 5HH and a fretless Bongo 5HH. I love how they feel. The neck is very comfortable to play. The fretwork, fretboard edges, and neck profile are flawless. The coils on the Bongo pickups are wired in parallel, giving it a very clear and scooped sound. The pickups seem to have an extended frequency range too. Total opposite of something like a passive P bass with its big warm midrange and rolled off high end. The Bongo is smooth sounding but bright and hi fi. Something I wanna try when I get some time is turning up both mid controls and turning down the bass and treble knobs to hear how close it can get to a classic passive bass sound.

the style is "controversial" for sure but the playability and sound is indisputably fantastic. also FOUR band eq 4! why doesn't more basses have this??? If you needed one bass to do everything I can't think of anything more versatile. Swiss army bass.

I dont understand what the difference between this and the normal stingray 5 is. Why would one take this over the other? With a J and P bass there is a clear difference in the tone and use cases for both, feel and design as well but with this, its the same pups and I'm assuming the same preamp? Is it just that you get a fancy paint job and a different body design? Would love an explanation.

The wood is different, the pickup placement is different and most of all, the coils of the Bongo humbucking pickup are wired in series as opposed to Stingray’s parallel wiring, which has big impact on the sound. I have both and they really sound different.

@@anotakudetective1546 Well, I kind of prefer the sound of the Stingray bass a little bit more, since I find it more articulate. There's a certain aggressiveness to the sound, that makes it easier to get through. The sound of the bongo is more neat. But I like the sound of Music Man basses in general, and since I have to play a six string bass, I bought a Bongo and gave my Stingray to a luthier to make a fretless out of it. And I am happy this way. 🙂 You can hear it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h2WptNWnnqW5pNI.html

I gigged one of these as my main bass for a few years, mostly because the guy I was backing really liked it. I guess my opinion is kinda atypical because I love the looks but never liked the sound or feel very much. For me it has a fundamentally weak tone and relies very heavily on the preamp to cover for it. With a Stingray it's like the perfect marriage of bass and preamp, each needs the other and contributes equally. With the Bongo it's like all preamp, with no substance beneath it. The pickups are not positioned such that they are viable solo'd which is annoying to me. You always need to be working with a blend of the two, and since the knobs turn very easily you're never quite sure if you're using the same sound as the last time you played it. Kind of nerve wracking when trying to record over multiple days. I could never find the optimal blend either. It was always either too woofy like an EB0 or full on Jaco sounding. I also feel like the preamp had too much headroom. Like how you can sort of saturate a Stingray by playing really hard, that doesn't happen with a Bongo. It's the feeling of needing to turn up the gain on an amp. I always had the impression that the pickups were not strong enough or not hitting the preamp hard enough to get it to that optimal point. Still, I do think it's one of the coolest looking basses ever so it definitely had that going for it imo.

Pretty much how I felt when I had a Bongo. Could sound really good but also seemed to lack some substance. Now I have a Stingray Special 5 H and find it much better for me

Gotta say I kinda agree about the sound. I switched to playing Bongos purely because of the ergonomics, which I find very good for me... but yeah, I still really struggle to dial in decent and repeatable tones compared to, say, my Sandberg California HH. If I plug my Sandy directly into an amp, it will sound awesome... but the Bongo needs plenty of work, and often some serious preamp tweaking.
