    I recently got a MM Bongo "from a resale shop" and the batteries went bad and it was not plugged in. From what I read out here they should last till changes or about 6 months and it was not that long. I know it is 18 volts so, the 2 nine volt batteries need to be in a series adding the voltage of the 2 nines to "18 volts".... Right? Parallel would only be 9 volts but, more amperage! From what I read I need to look for a short in the jack or the jack not opening when not plugged in or take some readings with the volt meter in various states of being plugged or not/off and on etc. I guess I am thinking while typing out loud here but, don't want my batteries chewed up. Please correct me if I am way wrong or just wrong!....Thanks.

    +Adam Brier Interesting. How does the average bassist feel about coil splitting? I'm a guitarist, and most fellow guitarists I know don't believe in splitting. It doesn't sound the same as a single coil.

  • @andyhoov

    @andyhoov

    7 жыл бұрын

    I play guitar as well and I'm cool with splitting. Yes, having the real deal is best, but having the flexibility in a single instrument makes for a reasonable trade off. As for bass, the tonal difference really isn't that significant for me or my style. Whether I'm playing my Bongo or my Jazz bass, I can get tones for pretty much anything I could ever want to play without feeling like I'm giving something up. Of course other bassists might have very different takes on this.

  • @MrTubularBalls

    @MrTubularBalls

    7 жыл бұрын

    +andyhoov Thanks. Yeah, i guess it depends on your playing style, and who you want to emulate. I porbably couldn't tell the difference between single or hum when I hear a bassist play, but I can on guitar, esp in a live setting. Singles have more transients as well as more bass, and sound more natural, .like a miked acoustic Hums tend to emphasize mids and compress the sound a little (and have less hum oc). Do bassist use humbuckers for less hum when playing with a distorted sound? Would explain why you don't see them so much on older basses, distorted bass is mainly a metal thing.

  • @andyhoov

    @andyhoov

    7 жыл бұрын

    That could be a reason why. Also, the stronger mid range is good for metal depending on how a band balances their sound. However, there were lots of older bassists who used plenty of distortion with single coils back in the day. This was especially true among Rickenbacker players like Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, and Lemmy. Personally, I like a bit of distortion now and again but am more likely to use a pedal with my Jazz Bass which has two passive single coils. My Bongo has active pickups with humbuckers so the output plus higher gain on my amp is enough to satisfy my desire when I want to get a bit dirtier. In the end, active vs passive is actually a much bigger consideration for me than humbucker vs single coil when it comes to choosing basses.

  • @MrTubularBalls

    @MrTubularBalls

    7 жыл бұрын

    +andyhoov Thx for the info. Yeah I forgot about Lemmy, not your typical modern metal sound though. I wonder if single coils are underappreciated in metal. There's a video here on YT that shows a killer djent tone coming from a strat, that's food for thought. Yngwie has killer tone too, when he mutes he can sound very percussive at times, and the clarity is always there. It may be why people mistook his aerly playing, which had lots of legato, for a "pick every note" style.

    Hey Dave. Do ya like the Bongo's or are they inferior to the Stingray and Stirling?

    That's exactly why I like them. I also have a Stingray in Shrek green & brown with a pickguard that looks like it was carved from a rotten tooth.

    Neodymium. 4 band EQ with a buffered blend as well so the pickups are isolated from each other.

    Dave, you need a 5-string neck supporter thing. Like you don't already have 4 different ones already. That Bongo is badass, I need to try the 4-string model. Is that body made of wood or a composite?

    Well bongo was sued for these. The body was made from a rare endangered indonisian wood with a steel aluminum alloy. The pickguard was made from hardened orangatang leather. The frets were made from elephant husk. They shipped them with actual cat guts for strings.

    I understood the bongo's were made out of Basswood for the body.
