it is worth learning German just to read Goethe Schiller and Muller in their own language.
I get goosebumps every time after the Erlkönig's "tone of voice" changes in his third entry and the child's final cry to his father is heard. It's absolutely amazing
Fischer-Dieskau is my favorite for Schubert Lieder, hands down. I will say, however, that for this one, I also really, really like Jessye Norman's recording of this. She has such an incredible sense of the emotional terror and trauma inherent in this text, this setting. It gives me chills each time I hear it.
this is absolute PERFECTION! There is NO better recording/interpretation of this Schubert/Goethe masterpiece than this one. Between fischer-dieskau and accompanist (Gerald Moore? Jorg???)...than this. someone...pianist? bitte??? I can never hear this and NOT cry at the end... "in seinen armen das kind....war tot! "
One of Schubert's countless master works. beautifully performed by two fabulous musicians. :-)
This is so expressive! I can see it as if it was an animation, lines after lines, all the movements of the floating spectre as it follows the horse with the father and child...
danke Goethe ,danke Schubert for this Masterpiece ...and great Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau ,the best version..!!!!

It was written in the Romantic era, yes, but 'classical' is merely a catch-all term. Bach is Baroque, Chopin is Romantic, Stravinsky is Modernist, and so on, but I believe they can all be subsumed under the term 'classical music'. Simply for convenience's sake.
I learned about this song in Humanities and absolutely love it! It gives me chills. Such a beautiful and amazing song.

SUPER song and VIDEO!!! 🇩🇪🎼🎹🖤🌹Thank you very much!
I listened to this while reading an English translation, and I have to say: that ending was far more effectively than anything fancy could have done.
I remember when me and my pals went see this piece played live. Me and my dearest threw our undergarments to Schubert. Such good times they were.
my mom is a pianist and she always told me how challenging this piece is. you get exhausted from keeping that rhythm throughout the whole thing
Learned about this song i my first college class ever, Humanities, and i can fall in love with any song in 5sec, this song only took 2 sec
I found the poem first, loved it, researched it and Wiki told me that there was a SONG to go with it, and- Thank you for the video.

The performers are Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (singer) and Gerald Moore (accompanist). They are extremely famous. xxx Mo P.S. I find this particular song very scary, as the 'Earl-King' robs little children, who are never seen again.
brilliant video!!! Thank you. my dear Schubert R.I.P.
Chilling. I can't listen to this without getting some serious goose bumps.
Epica brought me here. Oh and also the KZreadr Sideways. I'm so glad I did so. Complexity of music is more valuable than simply enjoying it for base reasons like a catchy chorus or repeated nostalgic chords.
The translation is here. Who rides so late through night and wind? It is the father with his child. He has the little one well in the arm He holds him secure, he holds him warm. "My son, why hide your face in fear?" "See you not, Father, the Erlking? The Erlking with crown and flowing cloak?" "My son, it is a wisp of fog." "You sweet child, come along with me! Such wonderful games I'll play with you; Many lovely flowers are at the shore, My mother has many golden garments." "My father, my father, and do you not hear, What the Erlking quietly promises to me?" "Be calm, stay calm, my child; The wind is rustling the dry leaves." "Won't you come along with me, my fine boy? My daughters shall attend to you so nicely; My daughters do their nightly dance, And they will rock you and dance you and sing you to sleep." "My father, my father, do you not see there, Erlking's daughters in that dark place?" "My son, my son, I see it definitely It is the willow trees looking so grey." "I love you; I'm charmed by your beautiful shape; And if you are not willing, then I will use force." "My father, my father, now he has taken hold of me! Erlking has hurt me!" The father shudders, he rides swiftly, He holds in arm the groaning child, He reaches the farmhouse with effort and urgency; In his arms, the child was dead.

In the second Verse, line 3, the text is "Den Erlenkönig mit Kron und Schweif", "Schweif" was translated as "flowing cloak", even though it normally refers to a tail made of hair, as horses have it. In the third Verse, line 3, its not "lovely" but "colourful", i also would not translate "Strand" as "shore" but as "beach" but i've got to admit that "shore" sounds better here. ("Shore" is normally used for "Küste" or "Ufer".) This is a fine translation nonetheless, it is kind of sad how much of rhyme and rythm gets lost

I do love it!! It's 11pm here, I am alone on the balcony in the dark.....AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!I am in extasy!
OK to clear this up, I know it might be harder for non German speakers, but basically it tells the story of a father trying to save his son, which has fever/very high body temperature. And as you may know, you can start hallucinating, when the fever reaches a critical point. And the son sees all these phenomenons in the trees and in the fog and so on, and the father only tries to comfort him. At the end the father arrives at the destination but the son already died due to his fever :(

LadyHellus My textbook says the boy is delusional and the Erlking symbolizes death, but my professor believes the Erlking character is actually a pedophile attempting to persuade the poor boy before killing him. I see no harm in wanting the song to mean something more...sinister, but the truth of the matter is Schubert created a story with these five characters. The point of it, as I interpret it, is a parent should not ignore their children's cries, not matter how outrageous they may seem.

NoCryinRyan "but the truth of the matter is Schubert created a story with these five characters. The point of it, as I interpret it, is a parent should not ignore their children's cries, not matter how outrageous they may seem." i kind of feel that you nailed it with this paragraph
Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?

Who's riding so late where winds blow wild It is the father grasping his child; He holds the boy embraced in his arm, He clasps him snugly, he keeps him warm. "My son, why cover your face in such fear?" "You see the elf-king, father? He's near! The king of the elves with crown and train!" "My son, the mist is on the plain." 'Sweet lad, o come and join me, do! Such pretty games I will play with you; On the shore gay flowers their color unfold, My mother has many garments of gold.' "My father, my father, and can you not hear The promise the elf-king breathes in my ear?" "Be calm, stay calm, my child, lie low: In withered leaves the night-winds blow." 'Will you, sweet lad, come along with me? My daughters shall care for you tenderly; In the night my daughters their revelry keep, They'll rock you and dance you and sing you to sleep.' "My father, my father, o can you not trace The elf-king's daughters in that gloomy place?" "My son, my son, I see it clear How grey the ancient willows appear." 'I love you, your comeliness charms me, my boy! And if you're not willing, my force I'll employ.' "Now father, now father, he's seizing my arm. Elf-king has done me a cruel harm." The father shudders, his ride is wild, In his arms he's holding the groaning child, Reaches the court with toil and dread. - The child he held in his arms was dead.

It makes me cry, scary like a child in the father's arms... this is a masterpiece for great souls. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who likes lied like me in Brazil, so it's a lonely crying! I love Goethe, Schubert even more... I wish the miserable world could be evolved enough someday for understanding them, as classical art.

the plot is basically the boy is sick and his father is rushing him to safety, but he has to go through the woods which inhabits the erlking. the myth is that whoever touches the erlking must die. the erlking hurts the child and his father is frantic to rush him to safety. when he arrives at the destination it's too late already
