    A Canadian sailor who reacted to this said it wasn't necessarily that the coast guard commander thought that the captain should go down with the ship, he was supremely pissed and repeatedly calling on Schettino to return to the ship for a different reason: In cases of emergencies like this, the bridge crew is supposed to give the coast guard and rescue crews comprehensive reports of the situation aboard along with the crew and passenger rosters. They're also supposed to be directing evacuation efforts. Because the Concordia's bridge crew all ran like cowards, the coast guard had to go in blind and it's probably this lack of information why it took them longer than intended to find the remaining survivors and some of the bodies of those that died.

    Just to let you know. The captain doesn't need to be in the bridge all the time. From my experience from being in the Navy, the Captain needs to be on the bridge for when the ship leaves port, enters port, and then in cases like this when they do heavy divination that requires a superior officer's command. Otherwise he is free to enter and leave as he wants. The Capt would have a hand radio, in case of emergency.

Someone could argue a ceremony isn't proper if using new-age technology like microphones and speakers. They could say it's not proper if it's wine instead of brandy or champagne. They could even argue it's not proper to fling the bottle over the side on a rope instead of a person holding it when smashing. Just seems weird to think they'd arbitrarily worry about "bad luck" to not get a more easily breakable bottle yet not be worried about the other changes over time (or being on Friday the 13th).

    And yet also nothing like the _Titanic_ . _Costa Concordia_ was a cruise liner, and therefore built to wander up and down coastlines. _Titanic_ was an ocean liner, built to transport people and cargo even through the harshest conditions of the Atlantic Ocean. The _Costa Concordia_ crew was lax about procedure, and some of them were hired without being able to fully communicate because it was cheaper. The _Titanic_ crew all at least had a common language to use, and those hired off the streets (because there were lots of those) were for positions away from the bridge. The helmsman explicitly was familiar with British naval traditions like tiller instructions, and was definitely not confused as to where to steer the ship. He was able to execute the swing as ordered by first officer Murdoch perfectly, however due to the ship's speed and momentum, was unable to avoid hitting the iceberg. Interestingly, there was an evacuation drill scheduled the previous day, but Captain Smith postponed it, deeming it unnecessary. Come the sinking, nobody knew what to do, and contradictory orders were given to passengers. Evacuation drills became mandatory wherever new passengers are taken on after that. _Costa Concordia_ was breached across the engine rooms and main electrical, disabling the ship due to flooding. _Titanic_ was breached forward of the boiler rooms, however the watertight bulkheads were not high enough to keep water from spilling over. the doors to the coal bunkers were not as thick as the main bulkheads, and breached more easily, especially the one left open after moving coal to prevent the spread of a fire that had started after departure (coal fires were common, and this one was properly put out). One commonality between the two ships: Crews did their best to keep the lights on as long as possible. Interestingly, _Titanic_ did not capsize partially because she already had a list to the side opposite the breach due to coal having been shifted to that side to get it away from a fire. Passengers had noticed the list, which was mostly evened out during the sinking. Schettino ordered watertight doors closed after collision. Murdoch ordered the doors closed prior to collision. Schettino ordered the abandon ship well over an hour after being told the ship was lost. Captain Smith ordered the abandon ship as soon as they knew the ship was lost. _Costa Concordia_ had sufficient lifeboats, all covered, but could not use them due to the ship's list. _Titanic_ had insufficient lifeboats, and all of them were launched, most of them not full. _Costa Concordia_ sank close to shore, resting with much of it above water, giving people who were not trapped below the water or in elevators the time they needed to escape. _TItanic_ sank in open ocean, and despite the ship hanging on nearly 3 hours, most of the people aboard, including crew, did not escape. _RMS Carpathia_ , the first ship on-scene for rescue, was still more than two hours away by the time _Titanic_ made her final plunge. Was there no order given to show the _Costa Concordia_ ? Not a detail given here. Prior to collision, Murdoch ordered all stop and then reverse at some point. This did not stop the collision, nor was there enough time for _Titanic_ to slow effectively.

    Watching this reaction for the first time and got to the part where she wonders why the passengers have not had any "in case of emergency" -briefing. That is among the things explained in Q&A. Back then, regulations were much more lax and you only had to do the briefing within 24 hours of embarking. Unfortunately most people had just boarded the ship at the most recent port and thus weren't briefed yet (It was planned to take place the following morning.) Regulations were changed in response; now every cruise ship must hold safety briefing for all passengers every time they leave port (before or during.)

    Your sweetness while asking about things like lying to the passengers and authorities make me want to headpat you. At this point, Schettino is probably wondering if he can salvage his career at all, and wants to minimize the situation. But he can't change the facts of what has happened at all, and as the captain, he holds the majority of the responsibility for everything that goes on aboard his ship. His career was effectively over the moment he lost control of the sail-by salute, which, by the way, is both dangerous and illegal without full control. Ships are equipped with all sorts of things to tell position and depth to the bottom of the ocean, and they get turned off during such moves so they can't track them. Only the black box can, because that's not supposed to have a way to be turned off.

    Your squeaks are adorable, and I agree with you on the inappropriateness of looting a place where people died, however there are regulations even aboard civil vessels, one of them being that civilians like Cemortan and the maitre d had no business being on the bridge, where they could get in the way of operations, especially as things started to go bad, and from bad to worse. So of course the crew ignoring regulations and procedures also made things worse. Especially as it has been revealed that the entire reason for the sail-by salute off of Giglio was that it was a favour to the maitre d, whose sister lived on the island. Cemortan had little to nothing to do with it, but she could still get in the way. As soon as the crisis began, she and the maitre d should have cleared the room. But they really shouldn't have been on the bridge in the first place. The reasons for the collision are three: - not operating according to procedure and regulations, including calling out exact positioning for each course change; - inability to communicate effectively and clearly with the man behind the wheel; - deciding to detour in the first place for a stupid, illegal maneuver, despite how it's not supposed to be risky, and the fact it is done so often, even today. The reason over 30 people died, though, is singular: - Schettino's refusal to recognize the first moment when he should have ordered the evacuation, and his continued denial of same. And for what? His career was torched already, but he chose to selfishly focus on himself, and even changed into a suit in a failed attempt not to be recognized as the captain. And then he did absolutely nothing to help, and continued to lie. The man is absolute scum. I sincerely hope that even once he serves his time and gets out, others' lives are never placed in his hands ever again.

I mean, it's a nautical bell. the magician assistant girl came out ok and disappeared from the public eye after a change of career, someone joked she became a airplane hostess. dominica has been going around, both attracting attention for various protests, and in various pilots and drivers arms. apparently it's the uniform charm's she just can't get out of. it seems she learnt to wait until the vehicle has fully stop, and that's and improvement. gregorio de falco was long known for being "that damned overachiever that always gets into anyone's way" long before, and had his hands into a lot of situation that put him in contrast with other colleagues. he unfortunatelly got into politic with the cult-of-personality party "5stelle", which only point was "we are not the one that were in politics before", somehow convinced people to vote for them, and absolutely fucked every singe fuck-up-able point during their mandate. de falco was far too competent and 'unaligned' so he was kicked out from the party during this time, after which he managed to grab one of the highest pencil-pushing role for Ita-EU relationship, and has been pushing pencils since then. Setting aside what the Captain did after the crash, I feel like a lot of people place the blame entirely on the Captain when it comes to the events that led to the crash even though it's not entirely the Captain's fault (from my understanding). If anything everyone in the bridge should have been held responsible for their contribution to the tragedy. The Captain made the mistake of ordering the ship to go too fast but that mistake COULD have been remedied quite easily if the 3rd officer had been doing their job and had told the Captain their exact location, they could have realized the problem sooner and made the proper adjustments as necessary to prevent the tragedy that happened. And while whether the driver should be held accountable or not is up for debate, you can't deny that his last second decision made sure that the crash happened when they almost managed to avoid it. As for what happened AFTER the crash...well I'd say the Captain should DEFINITELY be held responsible for that, I don't think ANYONE could defend his actions after the crash.

  • @Rhodair

    I blame the captain for the 3rd officer not doing their job. That's not something that just slips your noticed - he didn't _want_ the updates. Also, the captain's the one who made the decision to "go closer than they'd ever been before" and to increase the speed. They never should've been in the position where 1 single mistake by the driver could be so impactful, and it was the captain who stacked the deck so heavily against them before rocks were even spotted.

    A captain's _main_ duty is to ensure that his crew all _know_ what their responsibilities are and are _competent_ to carry them out. A good captain should theoretically be able to stay in his chartroom at all times other than his designated watches on the bridge and still expect that his ship be handled without any safety violations.

    I want to imagine that if _Costa Concordia_ had gone down in open ocean, the rest of the crew would have been more proactive, and started launching lifeboats without orders. Otherwise it'd be hard for even 100 people to escape safely. This was pretty bad, but nowhere near the worst maritime disaster. We have the _MV Sewal_ , a ferry that capsized due to being overloaded with passengers and cargo, and none of that cargo being tied down. She was not to be turned more than 5 degrees, yet someone obviously did. The captain was the first off the ship, having taken off his uniform, similarly to Schettino. What makes _Sewal_ infinitely worse, though, is that most of the passengers were high school students on a regular trip out to an island for the day. The crew played a recording instructing passengers to stay in their cabins, and few disobeyed to even see what was going on. The rest got trapped under water. A couple of teachers tried to save as many people as they could, but died. Coast Guard both refused to go into the ship to rescue people while they still breathed, and denied access to foreign ships that offered to render aid. The whole mess became one of many scandals to strike the South Korean government at the time, because of course the kids had cellphones and were telling their parents on land _exactly_ what was happening, while the Coast Guard and government actively lied, stating they had rescued everyone. As opposed to the truth, which was that the Coast Guard only picked up people who appeared out on the deck. Which was no one once the ferry capsized completely. But we can still go worse even than that. _MV Dona Paz_ was also a heavily overloaded ferry, but she was also sailing without certification, in poor condition, and with an untrained, uncertified crew. One night, while most of the crew was partying on or near the bridge, an untrained intern was left steering the ship. He had perfect visibility to see the oncoming tanker, _MV Vector_ , which was also moving very slowly, also under the guidance of an untrained intern. Neither of them knew how to steer their ship, and crash had devastating consequences, like the fuel in _Vector_ 's hold spilling everywhere and catching fire. Suddenly those aboard _Dona Paz_ needed to decide between burning on their sinking ship or maybe burning in the water, which was also shark-infested. In the end, none of the _Vector_ crew survived, and there were very few survivors from _Dona Paz_ , some scarred forever from the fire. Roughly 9,000 people died, because the company running _Dona Paz_ purposely oversold by that much. I believe after that they went into cargo, before going bankrupt.

    If MV _Concordia_ had been in deep-ocean water, the situation would have played out like _Futility_ (1898), with about half a dozen top-ranking officers sneaking away in one boat without making a single distress call and leaving no other survivors. Luckily, modern tropical cruiseliners aren't designed to cross oceans-they just hug coastlines and continental shelves, and they have automated alarm systems that will send out a distress call with GPS location and everything the moment any major shipboard system fails.

    While ships that are sinking may create some sort of suction, I would imagine it's not as big of a threat if you're already on a boat, unless waves knock the boat around and maybe drag the boat towards the sinking ship. Impact between the two may cause the smaller boat to tilt (or List), may punch a hole in the smaller boat, or cause the two to snag onto each other. Not good. But this is only an observer's perspective.

  • @DistractedGlobeGuy

    @DistractedGlobeGuy

    You don't have to even imagine: engineers have done over a century's worth of calculations and experiments about it. Basically, the slower a ship sinks, the less suction us produced, as more of the total interior space is flooded before she actually slips beneath the surface-no empty spaces means no water being pulled in. A huge trans-Atlantic greyhound like RMS _Lusitania_ going down in less than twenty minutes produces powerful suction, but mostly just around the funnels, stairwells, vents, and cargo hatches as they submerge; however, a smaller trampship like RMS _Republic_ going down in several hours would produce almost no suction at all as the flooding would occur so gradually. Basically everything else comes somewhere in the middle. With the way MV _Concordia_ was positioned when she grounded, there was no risk at all since at no point was she at risk of fully submerging while any rooms or machinery spaces remained dry-the water wasn't deep enough for that. What could have been a risk for the boats would have been the loss of stability. If she had made a sudden and sharp roll (which could have happened at basically any time once the power went out), she could have come down right on top of a boat that ventured too close to her side and forced it under. When MV _Oceanos_ was evacuated, the South African Coast Guard determined it would be safer to airlift passengers away by helicopter rather than risk bringing small boats alongside the powerless, half-flooded ship in a heavy groundswell for that exact reason.
