Hey Cameron and Matt, Thanks for the Omega episode. While I'm a strong believer that no one wins arguments on the internet, I feel I'd be remiss if I didn't add some detail around the issue of the production of the 30I Tourbillon. The movement was designed by Marcel Vuilleumier (Director of the watchmaking school in Le Sentier), but the movements (including prototypes) were indeed produced by Omega's own Jean-Pierre Matthey-Claudet. While it's unfortunate that Omega makes the infamous claim about making the first minute repeater wristwatch, I think you unjustly cast suspicion on their involvement (or lack of) with the 30I calibre, which was indeed a major breakthrough for the brand, and a technical innovation at the time. In this case, a small amount of research would have been sufficient to avoid this misunderstanding.

I concur with you, Brandon. And I don't think it is unfortunate the minute repeater subject. It was Omega's idea, not AP's. AP has used many times movements from other brands with AP's ideas..., as well as PP and VC.

Have not listened yet as I am listening in order (currently on ep. 16), but I am massively excited for this. Glad to see it is a long episode as well. Keep pushing them out!

Great podcast but can’t believe you didn’t talk about the Moonphase co-axial with the satellite image of the moon and Neil Armstrong’s footprint on the moon!

Loved the Omega episode. Have a suggestion for a future 'themed' show; Porsche Design. Not a manufacturer, but a decently long history as a design house, plus a lot of appeal to the car-enthusiast / watch-enthusiast crossover crowd. Thanks for a great podcast!

What I really enjoy a lot about this show, is that you guys have A LOT of watches on display. It's a pity about the camera, it would be nice to glare on those examples for longer. And Matt, seems like you've got into rhythm with the cameras, well done. Also, did not expect that Speedmaster Meteorite. That's really really good, got me interested in it. Awesome.

Thanks guys, overall good episode. An analogy for Cameron, since I understand his opinion that the awards should be less meaningful since the movements were not Omegas. The McLaren F1 was advertised and recorded as the fastest car in the world. This was because of its total package. No one criticized them that it had a BMW engine.

That maybe true, but most of the watch awards directly measure nothing but the movement, and nothing else about the watch. Where as a car is more of a complete package prospect when looking at overall performance. How if the car award was only for horsepower or engine reliability, I think the point would be more valid. Nonetheless, I still love Omega and think they make some great watches

technical aspects and precision capabilities have definately taken a back seat to aesthetics and design, but look at the Top Japanese offerings, who still regards this ( precision mechanical and Battery - Timekeeping / measuringTools) ( and Spring drive tech in between) as important as design and aesthetics of a watch.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional is still the only watch flight-qualified by NASA for EVA. The X33 is not qualified for EVA. Kinda comes off that you guys have not done your research on the Speedy.

Question about co-axials. If normal servicing isn't needed until parts need to be replaced is buying a pre-owned 10-20 year old watch with a co-axial a bit of a time bomb? Will the cost of servicing be high enough where it would be a better idea to buy new or just a few years old?

Man, we definitely need an Elgin & Friends history dive episode at some point.

Dudes before Omega James Bond used other watch brands besides Rolex, including Seiko, Breitling, Gruen......they settled on Omega in part because Omega was largest supplier of watches to military in WW2 reflected the image of secret service rather than status symbol.

Hey Matt, as far as the watch camera goes, there are some electronics repair KZread channels that have some pretty great close up cameras that you could possibly look into. EEVBlog uses a mantis elite that looks real nice with optical zoom. Not sure of his whole setup regarding what camera he has attached to it. It also might be expensive, I don’t know what your budget is.

Have you guys thought about doing an episode on some of the smaller brands (ball, zodiac, Bell and Ross, oris, etc) and only doing like 15 minute histories on each?

I like the video guys but you got a lot of facts wrong at the end. That was a Speedmaster '57 not a reduced. It's just the original size which only differs by a couple mm due to the next version case being asymmetrical to protect the crown and pushers. There is no He valve on a Proplof. The case is designed to be impenetrable to He as it was in the original. The modern Seamaster and Seamaster PO chronographs do not have screw down pushers as the pushers are water resistant and can be used under water. Just an FYI for ya.

That "roughed up metal bezel" is called knurling. Like the knurling on tool handles.

keyboard builder yes but you can’t make a camera like that seamlessly work with wire cast. Easy, no-hassle Compatibility with wire cast is a must.

You guys do your due diligence, AP and most top watch brands shared technology. AP Royal Oak designed by Gerald Genta. Gerald designed the Patek Nautilus, Omega Constellation. Patek, Roger Dubuis and Omega used Lemania based movements on chronograph. AP and Richard Mille uses Renaud & Papi to make their complicated movements. 😏 Omega is among the top tier watch brands with amazing history and achievements. Recently most brands brag about in-house movements. Go buy something else that an actor who made spaghetti sauce 😂

Idk about designing watches... but i know in the small/hobby firearm design world its totally fine to design a gun and then hire someone with a proper fabrication shop and maybe a few skilled craftsmen... sounds like thats kinda what Omega and AP had going....

I get the feeling from this Cam isn't too keen on Omega. For me Omega is the reason I wear Tissot...lol Might not carry the prestige as Omega but when you get to the nitty gritty Omegas tend to be an overpriced Tissot. I go back and forth with my bud who is an Omega fanboy. His Speedmaster has had to be serviced 3 times in a year while my 1 70s Tissot pr516 lemania has only needed a plunger. My modern prs516 chronos have needed NOTHING... LOL In fact some of the Speedys have modded eta 7750s and 7753s .

Audemars Piget were "modest watchmakers in the mountains"...? OMG..., Audemars was never a modest watchmaker. Simply, Omega had the idea to do that. It was Omega's idea. Just as Audemars had the idea of a luxury stainless steel sports watch, and they put inside a JLC movement inside. That's a JLC...? Patek, Vacheron and Audemars have used movements from others. In fact, Audemars has used modules from Lemania, which was part of the same company than Omega. That Constellation has an in-house movement, designed, produced by Omega, and Omega made those cases... Also, there are still been held accuracy competitions. Your video shows a personal dislike for a magnificent brand that has done many amazing things and some of the best in-house movements of the XXth Century, as the 30mm, the 3XX, the 5XX and 7XX. Come on!

I don't know if anyone else pointed this out... but Omega does not claim to make the first tourbillon wristwatch. Your statement is a little twisted up. 1947 is the year Omega introduces THEIR first tourbillon wristwatch. An article on Hodinkee reads that the first tourbillon wristwatch came out in 1931/32 made by French watchmaker, Lip. And wait a minute... you question if Omega MADE the tourbillon, or bought it & slapped their name on it, but you don't say you know this for sure nor do you present any evidence. You "ventured a guess". LOL And then, as an example to support that statement, you bring up the minute repeater?! And then later your even say, "I haven't looked into the tourbillon... but I'd venture a guess that they had somebody else create it..." That is ridiculous. ZERO credibility & just a stupid thing to say. LOL
