    Hi guys once again another excellent video. It was nice to hear the sound of the old engine running again after all the hard work that you all had done. What is the top speed of the bus now? It was good to hear you’ve dropped the volume of the music as now that I can hear what’s going on in the background a lot more. So keep up the good work guys I look forward to your next video.

    Is that a 590 cu in engine which was the old 9.6Ltr, good engines, never fail to start, the first AEC i renovated was a Monarch and had sat in a field for 12 years, so went i went to buy it, I just primed the fuel pump, pushed it with a forklift, and within 5 or 6 feet she fired up that was a 7.7ltr, great engineering. Love the videos by the way.

    Hi guys absolutely a professional video put together on a routemaster bus you need to make a DVD on these old routemaster buses. I used to go to scool on these routemasters always sat right at the front watching the driver changing gears and listening to the sound of the engine didn't want to get off the bus when I arrived at School I could have sat there all day long. It's nice to see them restored as they should be. Keep up the good work guys 👍👍👌

    Just viewed your engine change. Couple of items. I appreciate obtaining parts after so many years is going to be difficult. Couple of items worth mentioning: You swapped the injectors. Did you test them before fitting them to the replacement engine? The fuel pump is the CAV version. How do you know the pump is working correctly? The alternative pump manufactured by Simms. The small RM engine had the six stud flywheel fixing. The larger coach engine had the 12 stud flywheel fixing to deal with the additional power. Did you pressure check the flywheel? Did you replace the front and rear engine mountings? It is probably the easiest engine change of all time. We had to build two engines a day a Chiswick. The fleet at that time for LT and country bus, vast. Keep up the good work. I

    Hi Michael, many thanks for your comments. We always enjoy hearing from ex-LT engineers like yourself. Building 2 engines a day was some going but I guess having all the right kit and tools made life a lot easier? To answer your questions... The injectors were only recently overhauled so we knew they were good. We have overhauled fuel pumps in stock - both CAV and Simms units so I knew the pump we fitted was working. No we didn't not pressure check the flywheel. The engine mounts were good so we did not need to replace, these were hard to find until recently - The London Bus Museum has recently had a new batch made. Im not 100% sure but from memory I think there were 12 studs on the flywheel fixing - but I could be wrong! Thanks for watching our videos, keep the comments/observations coming.

    Good job done. But words fail me about the old engine. Plenty of idiots about in the mechanical trade. Care taken saves lots of heartache. Rebuilding an engine yourself with care will give you faith to use it in the knowledge it will do a good job. AEC engines iconic in any form.

    This is why you really need to be careful where you take cars etc to be repaired. most of the garages local to me, that i have took my cars to, in the past. I have ended up having more problems with the car, than before it went into the garage. One garage nearly blew my engine up practically, by not sorting the timing out after a water pump change. Took it else where, they over timed the engine. In the end i needed up taking the car to an old school car tuner who sorted the full lot out. Cost me double of what it costed for the water pump! That was all down to a mechanic owner who i bought the car off, changing the timing belt but never bothered to replace the water pump, when he owned the car. He saw it in the garage who over timed it, and asked what was wrong with it. I told him straight. The lad now does not mend cars now, and i wonder why.

    Adelaide in Australia had rear engine transit buses with an even beefier sounding larger version of this engine (760 cubic inch vs 590) horizontally mounted pancake style hooked to a 2 speed ZF 2 HP500 automatic transmission. They sounded out of this world and had a passing resemblance to a GM New Look, as well as the fuel consumption!!

    Thanks guys! Questions many moons ago when I rode these buses I used to sit so I could see the driver and watch him change gear! Was or is it a preselect gearbox and you dip the clutch on takeoff. Also, are these buses front or rear wheel drive? if rear how many carrier bearing do you have for that distance to the rear axle. :)

    A little knowledge is a dangerous thing sure enough but you have done a great job, it looks fantastic now. I am not sure if this is true but I heard the original 590 engines were de-rated to help extend life and clean up exhaust. Do you know if this is true and were the 690 military engines similarly de-rated?

  • @barryhiggott9458
    @barryhiggott94582 жыл бұрын

    Yes that’s a lot of money for an overhaul but in my experience the big problem was replacement main and big end bearings. STD size were easy to obtain as AE Autoparts in their wisdom made a large batch but oversizes were virtually non existent which meant many engines were simply scrapped. As for other spares well I built up a good stock but after I retired unfortunately the clown running the company simply scrapped them.

    Seems odd not having a proper air cleaner/ filter fitted to the engine. Noted the little disc with 3 bolts stopping large debris getting into the intake, but running around London, wasn’t the engine liable to suffer ‘dusting’ sucking in grit laden air into the piston/bores eventually causing blow by and oil consumption.

    Interesting about the coolant topping up. In real life this was the RMs achillies heel. Hardly any drivers filled them properly. Thence lots of head gasket problems. Hardly ever a problem with the RT, but RMs..... a constant battle. In many respects the RM was a superior bus, if it wasn't for this. It brought out the poor cylinder liner / block design problem which the wet liner AEC engines suffered from.

    @@Routemaster4Hire Hello David. The leak was between nos 2 and 3 injector pipes on top of the pump block. If like me you start a new system fuel bleed at the pump first where the injection pipe fits to the valve in the pump housing ( this way eliminating a possible blocked pipe) and once all fuel reaches each pipe, then go up to the injector and bleed there. It may have been the light reflecting off the diesel not cleaned up. Sorry if I caused you alarm.. if I lived in Wrexham I would be knocking on your door asking for a part time volunteer job. I fell in love with the RT then the RM back in 1969 when I left the army and until I got a job back in a workshop, I drove those buses out of Catford garage.
