Ep3 - America's Cup Boats - What are the LEQ12, AC40 and AC75?

Спорт

With the the LEQ12, the AC40 and the AC75, it’s easy to see why the 37th America’s Cup is widely considered to be the most technically complex Cup cycle. With some teams choosing to run all three boats, managing a modern campaign is a demanding logistical and technical challenge.
In the 4th episode of a series, which was commissioned by Yanmar ( / @yanmarmarine ) we take a look at the boats involved in this Cup cycle and find out what role they play on the road to the 37th America’s Cup.
Road to 37th America's Cup is produced in association with Yanmar who commissioned this series.

I think Team NZ has got it figured out accross the board. It will be an uphill battle for the challengers to say the least.

As a Kiwi, we know Te Rehutai was a step, at least, ahead of the other boats. The renovations done to her were definite advances. We cam expect the racing to be closer but, that bottle neck 2005 cup still freaks me out.

LEQ 12 is just like F1’s 60% wind tunnel scale, but the difference is they can test it in real life rather than just in the tunnel.

What's happening up at the jib clew on the new boat? Very good insights thanks

Ignorant question, but do the two helmsmen and trimmers swap roles on each tack?

As impressive as these boats are the real problem with this class is that there IS no actual TACTICAL sailing..its just a drag race...once in front you stay there unless you make a big mistake. SailGP only works cos the courses are short with lots of boats...i think the actual AC will be a bore fest.

Not the case - The recent event in Jeddah delivered just that, highly tactical with lee-bow tacks, slam dunks and multiple lead changes time and again - take a look kzread.info/dash/bejne/nnaDl9ZyY8TIlsY.html

Exactly right and all the recent AC debacles have been completely missable. Other than hoping the programs self-correct, I've ignored almost all race coverage since about halfway through San Francisco. AC completely lost the plot once the aim became raw speed. Such a loss.

people having 12mr boats as family boats and hobbies, wonder will someone in 50 years be family sailing an ac75? Maybe build a cabin in one?

The AC was over and done when the AC90 was abandoned. That juncture could have focused the Cup on a future that honored its roots while pressing state of the art large boat match racing. Instead we have these contraptions. The Cup is finished.

Even in the lightest winds these boats sail faster than any other AC class. 90s were a relic of waterline equals speed. Time to catch up and compete, just as NZ did.

@@desmondcrosland7884 LOL. Compete with what? And I didn't promote the AC90. I said their era, sadly missed to deflect into this trash, could and should have comprised the path forward. And I'm right. Even J Class is vastly better than this pinballing nonsense. Any super class is.

@@brucefale6132 Whatever that means. Sailrocket went 65 kts over a decade ago. Sails on sand are faster than that. Sails on skates faster still. Have been for decades. "Evolve with the times." Or, remember what real top-level match racing between yachts and crews is and get to it.

So you think that that these athletes sailors that have been flying these foiling boats at three times the wind speed 50 old knots to go backwards to about 15 ish knots that's like asking F1 drivers to have a bicycle race it's going to be very hard to go backwards now

My uncle won the cup 3 times sailing with Dennis Conner back in the 1980s. 12-metres = pinnacle of racing skill. It’s a different sport now in the hydrofoil era and so much performance data but dont forget AC is also a design challenge. The boat speed won’t go down if NYYC wins. Next class will focus on best teleportation device… at least the lawsuit will be entertaining.
