Playing Catch Up - Road to the 37th America's Cup - Ep10

Спорт

Of the six teams that signed up to the 37th America’s Cup cycle, four had sailed in the previous event in Auckland. Four teams that already knew how hard the task was going to be and four teams who came away from the last America’s Cup with pages of notes on how they would do things differently next time around.
Anyone coming into the 37th Cup afresh would need to be playing a big game of catch up.
But while Alinghi Red Bull Racing are one of those, having won the America's Cup twice before, the Swiss team has an impressive track record. Matt Sheahan goes to their base in Barcelona to find out how they have been playing catch up.
Road to 37th America's Cup is produced in association with Yanmar who commissioned this series.

Love to see Alinghi RB Racing in the competition! Thank you guys for your investment - it makes the whole endeavor better. You’ve built a fast and beautiful vessel, too!

Australia here. I like your work, along with that of Mozzy. The design race is interesting. I still like the Kiwis for the win, but I hate what Grant Dalton has done with shifting the venue. Too many people doing stuff just for money. Eventually it will ruin the sport. Matt, you need a better starting watch for your 5-minute starting sequence.

Money dictates sport now. Sad reality.

To be competitive it is basically like running a business.

Honestly, what was ETNZ supposed to do? It's like saying to someone who badly wants a car he can't afford to take on a loan with impossible payments. Is that really better than relinquishing one's home court venue to continue to be viable financially as a team??

Yes, money runs the Cup, but the promoters have misunderstood how to appeal to the viewers, and their money. You can't let the syndicates set the rules there has to be an understanding of what makes the product be watchable and involving. MotoGP, while not perfect, is a good example of how to run a sport like the AC.

I do wonder if AM made an error in sailing and testing in Pensacola. I love the look of the US entry, and I fancy it and the team to do well - but how much would they have learned from basing themselves at the race venue?

Love your content. Music in the opening sequence is a bit intrusive.

My questions are why the switch from the catamaran boats with hydrofoils to the monohulls with hydrofoils, and which is actually faster around a race course. The cats were clocking 70 kph at times and turning on a dime. Possibly the dinosaurs that still run sail racing hate to see multihulls take over?

These boats are close to the 100kph mark. Last americas cup there was chat that ETNZ had broken 56knt mark in training. But the weather never played its part and we got the conditions to see those speeds.

It's hardly the "leading edge of the sport". It's a fairly interesting side show. Given the constraints imposed by the AC honchos on the course, and the lock down on any real information regarding the boats: their development and performance, it is unlikely to have many fans at all.

@@ronjenkins7998Ha! I rather think I do. What rule do you think I don't know? BTW, the Deed of Gift was broken by a lawsuit years ago. Essentially, the rights holders can do pretty much what they want, and what they want is to make money. I just think they're going about it all wrong. Best
