Hanks’ point about war veterans not talking about their war really hit home to me. My great uncle fought in WW2. He didn’t talked about it to the entire family for his entire life apart from a few snippets when I had an essay in school and he opened up a bit. He didn’t celebrate VE Day, he didn’t watch war films and he didn’t acknowledge the war even happened. He had some tape reels in the loft and after his death in his 80s my great aunt climbed up to collect them and his last wish to her was that she burned them. Which she did. We don’t know what he saw during the war but it stuck with him for his entire life and he didn’t want anyone else to see it. It just shows that what is our history is someone else’s reality.

@@paulsteigerwald7623 I watched the newer one first, so it's Ioan Gruffudd as Horatio for me. Such a great miniseries with fantastic scenes, IMO It was 'Game of Windjammers' long before HBO's 'Game of Thrones' helped to push the limits of epic big budget TV shows, They built a working replica 1790s man-o-war just for the show to get those fantastic shots on the open ocean, real world location shooting and awesome highly detailed realistic scale models they built for filming the battles. There just aren't enough historical type sailing ship movies or TV shows in my opinion (Master and commander is really good too but even that was also 17yrs ago). Actor Ioan Gruffudd tried to get the rights to make more back in 2007 but was unable, so I'm hoping with fingers crossed someone like Tom Hanks will eventually make new ones to fill the void.

But i would have given anything to see Hanks' face when Dan mentioned that he goes through millions dead and episodes on torture without batting an eye, but that even he couldnt handle the Eipstein documentary. Dan isn't stupid, I think he mentioned Eipstein to Hanks on purpose, and I think it was for us.

Captain Kangaroo is a war hero. Distinguished Navy Cross at Iwo Jima. Actor Lee Marvin served with him and was also awarded the Navy Cross for action on the same day.

My grandfather was a signal man on aircraft carrier which he said always traveled in the middle of the convoy. He said things only got crazy a handful of times but its like pulling teeth trying to get him to talk about it. This is fascinating.

That Lee Marvin story on Captain kangaroo blah blah blah blah blah is all urban legend it never happened and Lee Marvin never said it happened. Captain kangaroo himself graduated high school in 1945 and joined the Marine Corps but the war ended before he ever deployed.

snopes Bob Keeshan, later famous as television’s “Captain Kangaroo,” also enlisted in the U.S. Marines, but he did so too late to see any action during World War II. Keeshan was born on 27 June 1927 and enlisted two weeks before his 18th birthday, several months after the fighting at Iwo Jima. In a 1997 interview, Keeshan explained that he “enlisted in the U.S. Marines but saw no combat” because he signed up “just before we dropped the atom bomb.”

People have busy schedules in the real world. It can be hard to get schedules to line up sometimes. I often have this issue with making plans with friends where we both have free time, but not at the same time. When you get a job and are raising a family maybe you'll have some understanding.
