The Crusades are by far my favourite era in history so hearing Dan talk about them for 20 hours would be mindblowingly amazing! Unfortunately, I think he explicitly said he would never cover that topic because of the modern political conotations. If I remember correctly, Dan was constantly being pushed by white supremacits on ye olde Hardcore History forum to do a Crusades series and he did not want to support that. As sad as that makes me, I totally understand him. Well, at least we have that Alexander epic to look forward to XD

I teach history at high school - cannot think of a more perfect way to introduce the Eastern Front conflict than the first 10-20 mins of the first episode of Ghost of the Ostfront. This man is amazing in hooking you in and educating you in a way I can probably never do... Dan has seriously changed the face of understanding history IMO

Hey Dan! I just want to add-- My daughter went to high school in Osaka about ten years ago. Obviously all her classes were in Japanese. And the history classes, too. She was stunned to learn how little her classmates knew about WWII. They actually didn't know who Hitler was. His name was never mentioned in any history class. He wasn't in the books. He wasn't brought up by any teachers. Ever. Anyway, that thought came to mind when you were talking about understanding the differences between a modern Western mindset and others. I'm about your age, I think, and I can't imagine how it's possible to understand WWII without being told about Hitler and other certain things.

Love your analysis and storytelling. My father was a doctors aid on a hospital ship in the Pacific from 1943 to the end of war. His ship picked up the wounded soldiers from the field hospitals and until the day he died in 1995 He hated the Japanese and would never buy anything they made. The Japanese culture has a long disdain for anyone who isn't Japanese. It's tribalism to the max. Mankind needs to better understand that lack of compassion for outsiders as well as the absurd hubris they had in WWII.. They have mellowed now but they still cared little for whales, or southeast asian ecologys, nor do they allow immigrants. In 1975 I had Japanese dye sales, one of which was a 25 year old kid who was convinced the Japanese economy would overtake the US soon. At the same time as this national hubris they have had a rigid heirarchy in their class structure that demands the masses sacrifice all for their leaders yet never dream of advancement. It sapped their initiative and was the big weakness of their armies. Kill the officers and the rest do nothing but follow the last order. This deference to authority goes way back to before 1850 when a peasant could be beheaded for not bowing deep enough to a superior. Their belief structure doen't come from Zen which I've studied so I suspect it must in part come from the shinto religion and ancestor worship where the continuing status of their dead ancestors depends on living kids behavior. I'm guessing but more study on why the Japanese behaved as they did in WWII would make a great addendum to Super Nova.To this day the current leadership avoids and deflects criticism of Nanking, korean and se asia worker treatment, POW's and chemical and biological warfare against the Chinese.. It's more than just the dogs of war; It's a lack of concern and compassion for non Japanese humanity and envirnments. Why?

in a way the japanese society is still very xenophobic, racist, n misogynist. u will experience it more as a non japanese asian than a white foreigner. we just give them a pass due to its strategic importance in the cold war and now the current conflict with china. why is it like this? i think its how their society has developed in the millennia of warfare. just look at their brutality in the imjin war against the koreans. and instead of applying some modern humanist values to it following the meiji modernisation they simply embrace that part of the medieval brutality into modern warfare. the west in turn started enacting some form of rules and the hague, geneva convention etc. while the japanese just didn't bother. i will say a close study on how the japanese became a modern imperialists power in the late 1800s might answer your question.

My father, who immigrated to the US from Taiwan in the 1950's, once had a Japanese post doctoral scientist working in his US laboratory during the 90's. One night the Japanese scientist watched a TV documentary about the atrocities committed by the Japanese military during their WW2 occupation of China which horrified him. The man was apparently taught very little about Japan's role in WW2 in any of his history classes. The next day he came into the lab and sincerely apologized to my dad for what Japan had done to the Chinese during the war. I don't think much has changed in recent years in the way history is taught in Japan's schools.
