Akira Kurosawa said that when he walked to work a few hours before the emperor had declared the surrender, every person he saw was grim faced and preparing for battle and death. Tradesmen were sharpening their knives; women were constructing spears. When he walked back home after the emperor's announcement, it was like a different world. Grocers and restaurants had their doors open, and were cheerily calling for customers. Everyone had relaxed and gone back to smiling and living their lives. He had grown up in that fanatical pre-war society, but even so he was absolutely astonished at the complete change people had undergone in so brief a time.

World World II was insane. Imagine sitting in London, just chillin' on your favorite tuffet,... but... every so often... an overhead, whistling sound interrupts your tea and crumpets right before a V2 explodes your favorite fish & chips restaurant. That would just really stress me out.

I searched “supernova in china” looking for the supernova that was recorded by Chinese astronomers during the 11th century. This came up, but I also love the pacific theater of WW2 so I ended up staying. Great content.

HH is considered by many to be the finest podcast ever.

As a Chinese, I feel extremely empathetic about this episode. The history from 1840s to 1949 is a tragic nightmare for us during which China used to be invaded by almost all the western countries, Russia and Japan. And among all the invasion, China suffered most from that of Japan during WWII. I appreciate that Dan gives very specific detail about the history of this period, a lot of which is written in the Chinese History textbook.

my favorite college history course was on the renaissance in europe and the professor started in prehistory. He only took two or three classes to get caught up to the time period of the class but it really did help the context of everything.

He actually went back further than that. He referenced Tokugawa Shogunate and the Battle of Sekigahara which was 1600 AD. Tokugawa Ieyasu started the Tokugawa Shogunate. And that height of the Samurai warfare that Dan referenced was even further back than that. Sekigahara was the grand finale to it All that to say, Dan is the man

In the 1960s Admiral Yamamoto's Son, his wife and his grandchildren lived in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas Texas. They were members of the Kiestwood Baptist Church. One of my best friends attended that church and took me over to their home. He was friends with one of the boy's. We went fishing in a creek nearby with him. I'll never forget the huge portrait of Admiral Yamamoto they had over their fireplace. Adorned with what looked like a shrine. From what I can remember. It was 1966 and I was 11 years old. Strange times where I lived. Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Yamamoto family and Oswald all living within 5 square miles of my Oak Cliff Dallas Texas neighborhood.

I'm still waiting for the day Dan does a 6 hour long episode of the emu war of australia and have it be just as serious as the regular episodes 😂

Given how controversial or grotesque this got, I still admire how wholesome and supportive this section of the community is. We're all here for the exact same thing Dan is, just a love for history.

Dan, your content and devotion to history is something that is vastly underappreciated. You have such a great way of getting so much information out in an unbiased and very interesting way. I have yet to find one of your podcasts that does not keep me riveted until the end. If there were more social studies teachers like you in our school systems we would be a much better country. How true I've been fascinated by history since I was a kid. And despite the horrible experiences of a couple bad teachers I still hold that flame for a fascinating subject

My father left Japan at 16 years old to avoid being put into the Imperial Army, only to be interned at drafted in 442 . Great work on this podcast ,my first one. Looking forward to hearing the rest.

I have degrees in History and Political Science, but I’ve learned more with Dan’s podcasts than I did in college. Thank you, Dan!

Speaks volumes about the dumbing down of academia

Even though there are few dislikes for this podcast, I am confused as to why there are any dislikes at all. What didn't you like about this ? I find them to be incredibly entertaining and intriguing deep dives into the background and circumstances that spawn these world-changing events. You couldn't pay me enough money in High School to care about these subjects. Now I pay gladly to hear Dan's take on them. An earlier commenter suggested that these be made into BBC documentaries, however I think that this self-produced model is perhaps more efficient, and less likely to be interfered with by people more interested in money and agendas. Want more like this? Pay the man for his dedication and skill. Dan, 'Blueprint for Armageddon' 1-6, is the most fascinating thing I've ever listened to. All ~23 hours of it. I can't recommend it highly enough. Thank you!

I think I was listening to "Celtic Haulocaust" recently where he mentions an old quip about Latin: "There is both a right way and a wrong way to mispronounce Latin." So Dan's familiar with finicky pronunciation and jokes about finicky pronunciation. I wouldn't put it past him to make that joke.

It's my second time listening to the Supernova in the East. Dan, you did an excellent job and your works would be remembered and still listened far in future.

That feeling of joy you get when a new hardcore history is out is directly correlated to the feeling of despair after you've already listened to it several times over three days and realize there's four months until the next one is released. Best podcast hands down, the effort he puts into it is worth the interludes between episodes.

The sheer volume of important histories that are continually and systematically overlooked by academia is astounding. There are perspectives out there that could enrich our understanding of history and those avenues are frequently left unexplored.

I had a history teacher in high school like that, he opened his discussion about the descent of Weimar Republic's into the Nazis with something to the effect that these were highly intelligent people, one day they were debating homosexuality, then they were committing genocide. Using a micro, to introduce a macro is alway an effective way of bringing someone into the psychology, culture and society of a certain population during the time in history where they made their mark.

I Just finished this series. All 25 hours of it! This is the most detailed account of Japans involvement in WWII that I've ever come across. Carlin breaks down the series of events leading up to WWII from start to finish in a way that can only be described as the most engaging history lesson that you could ever imagine. It's heroic, humbling, horrific and detailed in an unbiased journalistic style that's unforgettable. Bravo Sir!

The BBC really should make documentary series for tv out of your podcast series. They are fantastic.

Been reading about early modern Japan recently, specifically their transformation from a feudal society in the late 19th century into a thoroughly modern "Western" country at a time when their contemporaries in Asia were being carved up by Imperial Powers. An amazingly interesting period for anyone interested in Japan or World History. Can highly recommend the two books I am working my way through: A Diplomat in Japan - Ernest Satow (First hand account of the life of the interpreter for the British Legation) Samurai Revolution - Romulus Hillsborough (Very well researched look into the larger political crisis and the life of one of the many interesting figures caught up in the crisis) Thank you for all the work you do Dan! I have to admit, I haven't yet been able to shop online for your episodes on The Romans but thats my first buy coming soon. I can't wait to get lost in this episode. This is hardcore history. Just the way I like it. Dan does a great job of expressing our subconscious feelings about history that nobody else has the patience to listen to if we had the time to express it ourselves. Very deep.

There was a Gilligan's Island episode that dealt with a Japanese soldier that was still fighting WWII. If memory serves it was the episode when a Mini Sub with a Japanese Soldier shows up on the Island. I was a young kid in the 70's & I do recall hearing of at least one Japanese soldier. I think, it's more that I recall my grandfather's reaction to it.

Check out Paradox's grand strategy games. Supernova in the East would pair great with both Hearts of Iron IV and Victoria II.

jflabeets1 facts aren't intentionally balanced. Just saying. Yet yeah dan tends to be addicted to context on boths sides of a story if he can find it. Which is why we fans leap onto each episode. :)

I never knew I was interested in this until you talked about it. Also, thanks for being a fan of old school punk rock.
