    The SW8 is rated for cars up to 11lbsw. The craton fully loaded is a little heavier than that, but you will probably be ok if you are easy on the gearing. The Mamba Monster 2 & MMX are rated up to 15 lbs, so one of them might be a better choice. You can see all the Castle ESCs at this link. home.castlecreations.com/surface

    Quick question I replaced an xlx esc that caught fire with the mmx 8s esc. I notice the fan cuts off immediately after turning on. Is that normal? Maybe it cuts on after temps rise?

  • @RCPhysics

    @RCPhysics

    3 жыл бұрын

    This is perfectly normal. The new Castle ESCs have a thermostatically controlled fan, so it only turns on when it needs to. This is actually pretty smart because it extends the life of the fan, especially since these ESCs run much cooler than their previous generation ESCs.

    The best ESC for me that I see there is that Mamba monster X 8S. I have been running a spektrum 160Amp ESC , quite big on my 7 scale rally build ,but the problem is that they are sensor less and the motor corgging is uncontrollable. reverse also can not be customized meaning you can not tune it to go as slow as you wish. besides that, Castle ESC's are more reliable.

    I have trouble zooming into my log. Idk if it’s bcs I’m not doing only one speed run and stop, instead I drive for 40 minute so the data appears compressed. When I zoom in it does not zoom in where I am trying to zoom into. Also it doesn’t zoom like I want it to.., I’m trying to “stretch out” the graph so I can see the details but I can’t see the whole picture, I just see lines going up and down, frustrating. When I save the data, opening to the saved data file does not open up like the same graph, instead it’s like a spread sheet. Why is that?

  • @RCPhysics

    @RCPhysics

    2 жыл бұрын

    Point 1) The zoom in function on the Castle Link Graph viewer can be a little picky. You have to use the mouse to select the area of the graph you want to zoom in on or you will drill into some really weird areas of the data that won't show you anything useful. It takes a little practice, but you'll figure it out. Point 2) Castle Link saves data files as CSV (Comma Separated Value) files. This is kind of an old-school format that was really common back in the day for exporting un-formatted numerical data. So.... double clicking the file launches a program designed to look at large numeric files, a spreadsheet. To look at the data files in the Castle Link Viewer, you have to open the viewer program first, then open the data lotg using the "File" menu option.

  • @RCPhysics

    @RCPhysics

    4 жыл бұрын

    Big TP motors tend to be power hogs with speed gears, so I'm a little worried about the Max5. In-run voltage sag is usually the limiting factor for getting good speed with big setups. I'm not familiar with your batteries, so I don't know how they will hold up under severe load. Just make sure you run a good cap pack to protect your ESC and step up the gearing in controlled steps to avoid frying something.

    No arguments about the Mamba X. It is a 1:10 scale ESC, but a really strong one. And you're right Cryo-drive is more than just SW, which is why they can't just upgrade all the existing ESCs to have it with a SW patch. However, a lot of the magic is in how Castle uses their SW to make the smart HW changes work even better.

    The nice thing about their switch harness is that you can replace it or eliminate it all together. I will agree, though. Sorry for the delayed reply. Can you give me a little more info. What motor, ESC, and batteries are you running. Honestly, it could be a number of things. If it's a data logging Castle ESC, I may be able to help you sift through the logs to see what the issue is. For example, if the batteries were overworked, you could have developed one or more bad cell that would cause your voltage sage to spike which would give you this result. It's really hard to diagnose these things without data logs, but I might be able to help you troubleshoot.

    Cool honest review, I'm debating if i should buy a new rtr 2022 XO-1 or build my old version XO-1 roller which is similar your car and i'm just wondering what i should do. But if i built my roller i would use a Castle MMX8s with a new sensored 1717 1,650KV Motor (Not the stock XO-1 motor) also stock tires and body with a Radiolink RC8X or Futaba 4PM radio. What does anyone think about my setup in the roller vs buying a new rtr?

  • @RCPhysics

    @RCPhysics

    Жыл бұрын

    Sorry for the delayed reply. I like the idea of building rollers. I don't think you ever actually save money this way, but you have the freedom to build it exactly like you want. The MMX-8S & Sensored 1717 is a great combo, so you should do pretty well with it. The RTR does give you the stability system, but you you'll end up with a bunch of unused hardware to sell going that route. You could just as easily pick up an inexpensive gyro if you want that capability.

    Ok. This is one of those simple questions that could easily turn into a really long answer. 😅 Your stock motor was 2050kv. Your new motor is 1650kv. So for the same voltage, your motor's RPM will be ~3/4 of the stock motor. (It's actually 80.4% to be exact). That means to your new motor needs a pinion ~4/3 larger to get about the same overall wheel speed. (Again, that's 1.24X larger for exact numbers). Since the stock pinion it 16T, you need to replace it with a 20T to keep stock-like performance. Similarly, to match ARMMA's 20T "speed pinion", you will need a ~25T. I hope this helps.

    If you need more than 400A on 8S, you should move up to the XLX2. Pushing an ESC beyond its documented capabilities should be reserved for situations where there isn't an option that will handle those power levels. The XLX2 has demonstrated that it can easily handle more than 400A, so I wouldn't risk frying an MMX-8S if you are pulling that much current.

    @@haks_123 Castle doesn't publish current draw ratings because most of their competitors publish deceptively high current data. Many competitors quote just the current flowing during a "power pulse", when they should be quoting the average power flow over several power pulses including the "dead-time" in between pulses. It gets pretty technical pretty fast, but Castle ESCs flow more "real-world" current than any other brand, which is why they are more expensive. They are also more efficient... which is how they stay cooler than their competitors even though they are delivering more power. What are you planning on running? the Mamba Monster X 8S is a remarkably capable ESC that's capable of handling enough real-world power for most applications up to 1:6 scale.

I have 3 basic styles of mounts. You order flat plates which basically just give you a place to screw in your power switch. I also have "sideways" mounts (for the Mamba X, MM2, and MMS-6S) that let you squeeze big ESCs into tight spaces (with a power switch mount) and 'raised" mounts that let you bolt a Mamba X. MM2, MMX, Sidewinder, or Mamba Max Pro into the stock ESC location on a Traxxas 1/10 scale, like your 4-Tec with extra room underneath to hide wires. Here's a link to a video showing the raised mount. One of those would be a better choice for your 4-Tec. kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4lslc2wcpyWnZc.html

    These are just some cheap eBay tires that I picked up to use as basher wheels so I don't burn up my more expensive tires playing around doing dumb stuff. There are a lot of styles available on eBay for really cheap and I just painted the rims silver so they were nicer to look at. These wheels are really not good for much more than parking lot speed, but if you just want something that looks okay that you can throw around about worrying about wasting a bunch of money, they are perfect. The one issue is that the paint doesn't stick really well to the rims, so you will get some flaking if you beat them really hard like I usually do.

    What's going on man. Love your videos by the way. Anyway, I was wondering if you could please help me diagnose an issue I'm having with my arrma and the mamba monster x 8s? It seems that when driving the car at moderate speed or from a stand still and then hitting the throttle the car kinda starts and stops or hesitates. It also happens after braking when doing a speed run. It eventually clears up once I get to speed but it is killing my mph. Any advice you can give will be highly appreciated. Also, My gearing is 27/34 and I'm not using a cap pack. I also have a tp power 2100kv y motor with the mamba monster 8s. Thanks so much and keep educating us on this rc game.

  • @RCPhysics

    @RCPhysics

    4 жыл бұрын

    TP motors are notorious for pulling a lot of current on startup. You have to be very careful getting on the throttle in a speed setup. I have written several articles on this on my Facebook page and on the Castle Creations Blog, but you have to have a smooth gradual throttle pull on speed setups or the ESC could try to dump all it's power at once and overload the ESC. It's kinda like stepping easily onto a frozen lake rather than taking a flying leap onto the ice.... and punching right through. What are your start-up power and punch settings? Usually you have to turn up start power to high and make sure your punch control is set to give the most initial kick possible to avoid cogging. Also, what batteries are you running? That may be a factor. I'd really like to see your data logs to see if I can find anything else useful in there. REach out to me via Facebook and you can send me your data logs right though FB messenger.

    Check the specs 1300a peak power on 8s for max 5 I thought the mmx was much lower and xlx. • @RCPhysics

    one of the reasons Castle does not give power numbers is because a lot of manufacturers play some pretty funky games with their numbers so it is almost impossible to verify some of them in the real world. Many times those huge numbers are only if you take the current that flows in a single peak and then extrapolate that out to a continuous level which is pretty much impossible. if you want a good example of the difference in power, look at Phillip jolley's KZread channel. He just did a comparison where he ran a Max5 ESC in a stretched Typhon, and then did the same test with the New Castle Mamba Monster X 8s. The Max5 shut down under the load at less than 90mph where the Castle did over 130mph.

Now, if I were to go back and do it over, I would have gotten the XLX but don't necessarily regret my decision as I have murdered some people with my Max 5 TFL SSS 800kv setup. Like pulling wheelies with the limitless isn't something I see often and one of the reasons I went back to my smaller XK-4092 1450kv.
