EP.16-Leaking Sunroof drain tube fix- WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Continuing on my adventure of bringing a 18 year old Jeep WJ Grand Cherokee back to life. This episode we deal with the common problem of the sunroof leaking, soaking your headliner and floors with rain water. The common problem is clogged or broken drain tubes. The sun cooks the tubes in the windshield pillars and it breaks apart. if they are clogged then your headliner gets the water. Pretty simple fix for under $10.

I am currently restoring an old railroad station that was originally built as the Daytona Beach East Coast station sometime in the late 1800's. It was torn down sometime in the 1960's and 50 feet worth of the lumber was used to build a cabin in the woods on a lake in Florida.

@SpiralDesignWorks know anything about not getting any heat out the vents? I've had new, thermostat, rad, water pump, heater core, door blends and actuators! It's been scanned and nothing wrong! Recalibrate, still no heat! The door blends and recirculation door move OK, hot water in tubes, no airlock! Is there a valve or electronic device that could be overlooked by a non jeep mechanic? Any help would be great as my wj is a great car! Just passed mot with no advisers!

@terrystratford1235 that is tough if you already replaced all that. Check to see if you are getting coolant flow in and out of heat core.

@SpiralDesignWorks my mechanic has a heat gun to see thermo temps, its all good! He flushed it multiple times! I wonder if there's an electronic device that sends info from turning the knob, to the actuators? Jeep want £200 to plug into a proper diagnostic! They assure me it will tell me what's wrong! My mechanic has to replace the sunroof drain hose and is determined to find why I've no heat! He and his team are amazing, does alot of local work! He has looked after my jeep for 5 years! I understand there's a automatic temperature control unit on the back of the hvac system that controls the actuators, but that's a dash off again! I'm hoping it's something simple! 🙏

I had a huge leak and after removing the headliner I realized there wasn't any tube at all attached on the drains. Went to home depot and grabbed some clear hose and used a hose clamp on the sunroof drains and stuck the other end thru the floor board and out a ton of clear silicone on the floor and it all worked great. Big thumbs up for the video btw!

Finally someone did the entrance drain correct. So many youtube videos show putting the drain tube inside of the main drain...What? Thanks for this video I was scratching my head trying to figure this leak out. I did eventually pull my floor mat up, and wiped the lower drain tube dry, and re wet my upper side panel on my roof- then the area under my mat at the lower drain tube did get wet again. So now I know it is coming from the faulty tube. Great Video!

Excellent video, thanks very much for posting this. My WJ had been bone dry summer and winter but then after a prolonged period being parked up and facing downhill low and behold I return to find an indoor swimming pool in the passenger footwell. My first thought was to reach for the extra long pipe cleaners to purge the tubes of gunk and restore water flow. However, after watchiing this and the point you make regarding the brittle nature of the connection's and the tube I thing your approach to inspect the whole line from top to bottom is preferred. Thanks again for going to pains in showing good quality video of each step and how you achieved those water tight replacement connections and tools / pipe used.

Heres another tip...to keep the rear dog legs from rotting out, which for most of us it may be too late, extend the C-pillar drains OUT of the vehicle. As they're currently 6 inches to short to do so and actually dump inside the "pockets" in the rear behind the bumper cover. From seeing the fronts drain into the frame rail, and knowing the rears drain inside the vehicle, it would seem these WJs were set to rot out from the factory. Talk about guaranteed failure! It just ensures that nothing will last forever..

My 04 was getting water on the drivers floor, of course the first thing I checked were the roof drains. Expecting crumbling blue tubing I was surprised to find black tubing in perfect condition. The tubing was still very flexible and intact, the factory must have done a late production change to the tubing material. After pouring a good amount of water in the drains it was clear the leak was elsewhere. After some investigating I found the source of my leak was the bellows the door wiring passes through from the pillar. It was dislodged where it registers into the pillar allowing water running down to enter the bellows where it would run down behind the kick panel onto the floor. A reseating of the bellows in the pillar solved my problem.

if that much water is making its way into your sunroof drain tubes then your sunroof still needs to be replaced the drain tubes are only there as a backup if and only if that much water is making its way around your sunroof seal and down into the trough that holds water and exits through your sunroof drains. They are not there solely for the purpose of carrying all the water that lands on your roof down the drains your sunroof seal is supposed to keep the water out it shrinks over time because of the sun exposure and you have to replace it there is a guy with a Dodge charger that has a video on how to do it on all Mopar vehicles which is Jeep Chrysler Dodge and RAM hope this helps
