English Springer Spaniel Dog Breed Guide

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Is the #englishspringerspaniel dog breed the right one for you? Discover what they're really like to live with in this video profile of the breed featuring Heather Tissman who has owned #springerspaniel dogs for over 25 years.
Plus, top canine experts add their advice on health, grooming and behaviour issues associated with the breed. Heather owns six #springers. She has been breeding, training and working them now for just over 25 years. They’re working dogs/pets.
When you’re thinking about an English Springer Spaniel, you definitely want to be thinking that there are two strains. There’s the working type, which is bred for gundog work, and the show type which just get bred for the show ring. Both the working side and the show side need mental stimulation. It’s just that in the working side, you’ve got the supercharged version. A working Springer many not make the best pet. If you like the look of a Springer, maybe you ought to be thinking about the show side more.
They’re very full of it, they’re very mischievous. They’re an intelligent dog, and if they’re not occupied they find their own entertainment, and the way round that is exercise and training. They must be trained. All dogs need to be trained, but certainly a Springer Spaniel. They’re a working dog and they’re bred to do a job. If you don’t give them a job, they will go self-employed, and a self-employed Springer can destroy your kitchen in a day.
Energy levels are very high, they’re bred for stamina. They’re called Springers because when they’re working they’re springing up and down in the corn or on the grouse moor. And they can just go all day, and you bring them home at night and they can still go on. I’ve taken a lot of rescue dogs in, Spaniels, that people have bought them with young families, they haven’t had time to exercise them and they’ve literally gone bananas in the house.
The Springer Spaniel has a silky coat. This coat has a tendency to tangle. This is why the dog has to be brushed on a regular basis, at least three times a week. If you want to keep the coat in beautiful condition, it should be groomed by a professional groomer every four to six weeks.

I consider myself extremely fortunate. My springer is one year old. The mother is a field dog, and the father is a show dog, my springer, whose name is Angel, is neither overly active or lethargic. But very intelligent. it took me two weeks to have him trained on the basics, and in less than a year his recall is almost 100%. we walk a total of 6 to 8 miles a day; morning, early evening, and late evening. One thing that these ladies don’t mention, and I’m sure they do in other videos is that this breed is extremely loyal. Anyone thinking of getting a springer would not be disappointed.

I have one presently and have had two others. I would like to add that Springer's ears being covered need weekly attention. Every Saturday I clean Queenie's inner ears with a 5% hydrogen peroxide 95% water solution swabbed on with q-Tips. She is happiest when afield and loves being part of the Ruffed Grouse hunt. Just a great companion.

My 2nd springer was so clever I managed to train him in one day to sit, stay, fetch and drop. If u can train a springer to remain sitting whilst you throw a stick and have her fetch on command you have done a good job. I use hand gestures now to command my current Springer. Wonderful wonderful dogs I'd never dream of ever having a different breed. They are surprisingly tough, resilient and have incredible stamina. Very affectionate and always want to play and to please. My current springer is the biggest softie ever. I swear sometimes she thinks she is a cat. She will just sit on my lap and purr when I tickle her belly. I can confirm they love water. All of my springers as soon as they see any type of water whether that be a puddle or a lake they make a bee line towards it at full speed. Also when I go on hikes with friends and family they will run up and down the line of people making sure everybody is ok and together and no one is lagging behind. I digress I could talk all day about how fantastic they are

we just picked our first ESS this summer and my were we impressed with him as you said very clever! our babies recall, sit, lay down and heel was perfect within the first week of having him (7weeks old 🤯). Now 13 weeks and he's mastered fetch, roll over, place, shake a paw... Also so true about the non-stop gogo they have. First dog I've ever owned that we have to give forced "down time", not sure if anyone else has experienced this with this breed!? Any tips would be appreciated!

So true about Springers finding water. I once took my old Springer out for a walk, it had rained a few days before, he found a massive pot hole on a dirt road and proceeded to lay in it. All I could see was this head sticking out. Was funny but he didn't like it when he had to have a bath because of the dirt he was covered in.

I have a springer spaniel called Archie and a beagle called Tizzy. Archie is cheeky, energetic, Jumpy and EXTREMELY stupid! When we got Archie from a pup he had 2 other brothers who were really jumpy. Archie was lying down and wanting a fuss instead of jumping, so we got him in thinking he'd be a calm gentle dog. WE WERE WRONG. The next day he was hyper and up and about. Though he's stupid to an extreme amount he loves us and we love him! :D

How big of a backyard is necessary for a Field Springer? I walk several miles every night and am planning to take my new dog out on leash. I can do several daily training sessions in the house each day. Backyard as well but those would be more mental exercises than a lot of physical exercises. I've read I can't even take them on my full nightly walk -- because of the distance until they are 2 years old. Thoughts?

  • @0rnery

    @0rnery

    3 жыл бұрын

What? Backyard, bigger the better, but they're happy just to fetch a ball, even if you only throw it a few feet. They love to search. Hide a treat, and let them search for it. They just love that. They can walk as far as you, and LOVE to sniff all the way. They just love life and people. Best dogs on earth.

If you are getting one of these for a working dog look for a reputable breeder that docks their tails. They are known to break easily especially when they are flushing game and cause the dog pain and discomfort. On top of that you will have to pay vet bills to get their tail fixed and it is likely they will break it again.

My Ft springer spaniel Oscar is 14 months now, and when we goes to the dog park, he loves to run around and is always the fastest dog, havent met anyone else, who can keep up with him....😄 He also love to play with the other dogs, mostly breeds with the same high energy and age. When we are the only ones in the park, he gets very busy, running into the bushes, and bark. I think, his hunting instincts are taking over, and hes looking for birds. It can be a little to much, and I am worried he starts to behave the same way, at home, and bark and gets overexited , hunting the birds....He have already behaved that way a couple of times...... Whats the bedst solution for my dog, shall I stop him, before it might get worse...?
