eMTB vs Mountain Bike - Marin Alpine Trail XR vs Marin Alpine Trail E2 - Head to Head Power Hour!

Спорт

In this video we head up to Sky Park Bike Park to compete in the One Hour Power Challenge with two nearly identical Marin bikes. In the analog corner we have the Marin Alpine Trail XR while the other corner has the Marin Alpine Trail E2. Over the course of two hours we'll ride each bike on the same test trails with the goal of evaluating fun, exercise and amount of riding completed.
If you've ever wondered what a MTB vs eMTB test would look like under a time environment, this is it. Those one hour post-work rides have forever been changed thanks to eBikes and we're not mad about it!
Be sure to visit our 2021 eMTB Shootout to see lots more eBike reviews and visit the website for the full write up on this story, and lots more reviews.

Cool to see the results show exactly what I feel riding E vs standard. I end up riding more miles, more often and have more fun. Ultimately, I push myself just as hard, maybe my max heart rate is a bit lower but honestly, that’s prob healthier. I really don’t miss that “I’m about to have a stroke” feeling at the top of a tough climb.

Thank you for yet another amazing video. You are quickly becoming my go to channel. I'm just getting back into riding after a 30 year break. I dont expect to be doing much jumping or racing just paved or groomed trails mostly. I've got a Rift Zone XR on order arriving next month. However I've now been looking at ebikes a bit as I understand them better. This one has me curious for sure.

This is to anyone who is on the fence with emtb's. I have a Trek Rail 9.7...the difference between an emtb and reg bike are literally night and day. Take an emtb for a ride...you won't want to ride your reg bike ever again...it's that big of a difference. GREAT honest review. Kudos LW.

Great video! I'll always have my acoustic bikes but when I want to hit the steep and deep mountain climbs on some of the most epic runs here in my backyard of the PNW, I'd much rather get in twice as many runs on an eMTB than half. Great job on collecting this data. I truly feel this will help when local area politics start to get involved when deciding on whether or not to allow eBikes. This is the kind of data that makes logical sense and needs to be presented.

If I could have any bike, but only one, I must admit I'd rather an "acoustic" bike, but if I could have any two (again, money no object) then one of them would definitly be an eMTB. I also think it would have been better to compare the top-of-the-line AT Carbon 2 instead of the AT XR, as it costs almost identical to the AT E1, and would be a better comparison for someone who's considering the AT E1/2 (because let's be honest, if you're considering any of the alloy models, you're not looking at the E models).

Tough question SImon! The Spectral;ON is a helluva machine! This will likely be a bit more composed on super gnarly DH and big hit terrain whereas the canyon is lighter and more playful, although it has a really low BB, so crank swap will likely be necessary... Depending on if you love riding bike parks/chair lifts, that could also be a deciding factor in E vs A bikes. If you watched our 2021 eMTB SHootout, you'll know this bike scored very high, winning an award, so it's clear to see we love it, but the Spectral ON wasn't there, and likely would have placed as well. Inventory and your riding style are ultimately going to be the factor to be honest, either way you won't be bummed!

The "more reliable" way is though a wearable device with heart & breathing sensors, e.g. a Garmin Forerunner could track all the stats you saw at the end, with arguably better accuracy than Samsung or Apple watches in vitals and definately GPS, and the battery lasts a week or more.

That is a completely reasonable and actually impressive price point to do these sorts of things on a piece of sporting equipment.
