How can mothers can help their emotionally sensitive children become emotionally resilient adults?
What causes emotionally sensitive children to later develop mental illness?

I've found, through my research, that the increased level of serotonin in the brain, due to reduced re-absorption of the same, caused by the polymorphism of serotonin transporter genes, causes the increased or enhanced communication between the peripheral and the central nervous system. This causes a person, with that particular genetic mutation, to experience the environment in a much more intense way than a person without that mutation. In short, all the signals coming from the peripheral nervous system are amplified. If that is so, then there is much more to all this than just a simple 'sensitivity' gene, in my humble opinion

That’s really interesting - from my understanding serotonin’s effect on sensitivity and mental health is not as clear cut as was once assumed, and that there are many related genes with different effects (some cases fit the low serotonin = depression model, but others clearly don’t, and also don’t respond well to SSRIs because of this). Would be happy to read more about high levels of serotonin causing sensitivity because of heightened communication between CNS and PNS - if you have a recommendation please send 🙏🏻

@TheBiggerPicturePodcast I am referring to 5-HTTLPR. It might not be serotonin alone but also other neurotransmitters that are responsible for the amplified way in which some individuals experience the environment and interaction with other people. I include myself in this group. From my, rudimentary, knowledge of neuroscience and observation of my own cognitive processes, it is the enhanced communication between the PNS and CNS that drives individuals into emotional overstimulation. That's why, in my view, many individuals with the 5-HTTLPR characteristics end up having mental disorders because of the intense negative emotions (not caused by low serotonin but amplified negative signals from the PNS). In that case, the SSRIs are not effective, and there is no clear way out of it, which causes negative reverberation in the brain of the individual. This conclusion helped me with my own personal issues I was experiencing.

@TheBiggerPicturePodcast www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9752870/ This is along the lines of Sensory Processing Sensitivity as proposed by Aron and Aron.
