Great song, they wrote this song because their critics called them cultural traitors because all of their songs were in English, well that was their mistake, go get'em Pau. This was also the first time they performed it live anywhere. Their Foro Didi show absolutely rocks.

The origin of malinchista goes back several centuries to a native “Mexican” (Aztec?) woman named Malinche who served as Spanish explorer Cortes’ translator and then mistress, and in a sense helped him conquer the area. So in other words, it means traitor to one’s own culture or favoring another culture over your own.

Don´t mess with Pau because she make you a song like in Animosity, her first personal experience song. Malinchista coming from Malintzin, the woman slave and later lover of Hernán Cortes that helps him to translate during the spanish invasion of México, make reference to people to prefer other cultures over their own. Among all you said about Pau she also runs the click track, the back tracks, the pedal board of Dany and the video screen from her laptop and also lose a stick in the middle of the song and take another in a second. Good reaction as always. Happy Holidays. Feliz Navidad from Cancún, México.

I watched a review of this by a Mexican musician, who burst out laughing at one point. He said that it was harsh but very, very funny and explained the background behind "Malinchista", with a small history lesson in the process. Pau's actually triple (or quadruple?) tasking here -- she's not only drumming ferociously and singing lead, she's also swatting away those unnamed critics like they were particularly annoying flies (not to mention, of course, running the display, click track, and backing track, although she's not really doing it during the song).

Great job as always, Michal! I have been a big fan and supporter of The Warning for years, and it is always a pleasure to hear anything new from them. Recently, I've been very impressed by Dany's continue growth and work as a singer, which is now very top notch. Here is a good description of what this is about: A scathing rebuke of their Mexican critics that had accused the band of being “Malinchista” a Mexican term used to call out cultural traitors, because the group has only recorded English language songs. Well this song is in Spanish and it is full of attitude and angst fired toward those critics. The song was released in June of 2019 and performed live for the first time in Monterrey Mx at the Foro Didi and has become a show staple ever since. The reception of the song in Mexico, Central and South America has been overwhelmingly positive as with non Spanish speaking regions around the world. Here are the English lyrics: They say they have to pray for me So worried but I do not see That they are praying so much It's not for much Quit your judging already Stay away from me Please! Criticize me a little more I find myself entertained to hear Everything you say All your badmouthing Let me laugh a little more Because you don't know anything You run your mouth and don't shut up I cover my ears and I simply say Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na Let me refute the list I'm not crazy or a malinchista Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na They say I am selfish Condemned narcisist I don't know what to do anymore I don't see the point of pretending I'm not trying any more Because I already know That behind the curtains they keep talking Their good intentions always come out lacking Don't believe that you're fooling me with that disguise Because you don't know anything You run your mouth and don't shut up I cover my ears and I simply say Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na Let me refute list I'm not crazy or a malinchista Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na They say I am selfish Condemned narcisist I'll refute the list again I'm not crazy or a malinchista Na na na na na na na na Na na na na na na na na They say I am selfish Condemned narcisist

According to the Font of All Knowledge (Wikipedia), 'malinchism' is "a form of attraction that a person from one culture develops for another culture" - basically their critics are accusing them of malinchism because they dont sing in Spanish, implying that theyre betraying their own culture for the favor of another. This song is a big middle finger to all those people. Im certainly glad they sing in English, and as theyve explained themselves, it makes perfect sense (most of what they listened to growing up, was in English, so it just came naturally when they started writing their own songs). But I do like both Narcisista and MARTIRIO even though I dont speak Spanish. I think its a nice touch to have a Spanish song once in a while to remind people. They also make a big effort to also say everything they say in English, in Spanish, to include all their Spanish speaking fans who might not be as fluent in English, and I really appreciate the dedication and maturity of that - despite it meaning its tougher for me to follow!

The version I've heard is that their mother (Monica, or Mony) had to help them with their grammar and such because some of the phrases didn't really mean what they thought they did. Pau has said that it's much harder to write songs in Spanish than English due to the nature of the languages (Spanish having a lot of long words, I believe she said). As far as toning it down, I doubt that their parents could have made that stick. Their parents weren't happy with Copper Bullets, considering the subject matter (domestic violence) to be a bit too mature for them at their ages, but it made it on the album anyway. The song is neither lascivious, glorifying, or sensationalizing the subject. Luis (their father) was one of many who complained that Dull Knives was too short, but they tried a few things, decided that none of them improved the song, and kept it as it is.

By the way, this song exemplifies why I'm Dany Battalion, if only by a hair. She gets a mocking, sneering sound out of her guitar, both in the solo and the rest. I believe Dany does not get the respect she deserves on her instrument relative to Pau and Ale. She doesn't play a lot of virtuosic solos of the Eddie Van Halen mold, so some people assume that she can't and therefore she isn't a very good guitarist. She certainly has played solos like that, most commonly in early days when covering songs, but her goal isn't "hold my beer", it's to play appropriately for the song. In this case, while the solo isn't especially elaborate, she's using her guitar effectively as a backing vocal, and as a lead vocal in the solo expressing her contempt of those critics. She does this in a different, but just as effective way in The End; I won't say more because I don't recall that you've reviewed the song. Her style is more along the lines of Roger Taylor and David Gilmour, and even though they don't ordinarily shred no one argues with their abilities. As for those critics, I doubt they've done a fraction of what The Warning have for Mexico. They are proudly Mexican and serve as very effective cultural ambassadors for their country just by way of their music and how they comport themselves. All of their official videos were shot in Mexico, with three (XXI Century Blood, Enter Sandman, and Martirio) being at least partly outside in locations that can be recognized and another (Disciple) being in an unusual museum (the Museum of Steel, a former blast furnace). It will be interesting to see what happens in March when the Foo Fighters close for The Warning in Mexico City :-)

I'm german. So, my spanish goes as far as "yo no hablo espanol "= "I don't speak spanish". But this message is so clear (I was familiar with the context, before. It's just fun to watch another reaction). About the "malicista": I'd translate it to "I'm not a sick person". In french: "je suis malade" would translate to: "I'm sick." (My french is even worse than my spanish.) Hope this helps. It's so well structured. So powerful. What a great rock song! Straight in the face: hard rock! Played rock hard. Maybe the best hard rock song I came to listen to in the whole last year. (If I had to pick just one: THIS is the song that comes to my mind, first.) And their new songs are just as good, in my book. And I listen to a lot of stuff! Another "best" song would be Arjen Anthony Lucassen's "Star One" project with the song "fate of man". pls take a look: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qKJrspWohrDUqdY.html Greetings from the far north of Germany!

Great reaction to one of my favourite songs by The Warning. Yes it drips with attitude and I probably have less understanding of Spanish than you but the gist came through loud and clear. What you were saying about music telling a story, when I was young, and in school, our music teacher played "Hall of the Mountain King" from the Peer Gynt suite and asked us to figure out what the music was about even though we had never heard it before, a lot of us got pretty close and when he told the story it fit the music so well. Years later (many, many years) I still have the Peer Gynt suite by Edvard Grieg on vinyl. Another great example is the Midnight Express soundtrack, I think only one track has vocals the others are just musical masterpieces imo that tell the story so well (Cacophony and The Wheel will make you feel crazy and Loves Theme is just beautiful).

*Narcisista* was their F.U. to their critics. *Martirio* was their "Here. Is this what you wanted??". When they do an all Espanol album. It'll be done The Warning way.

Malinche was the native woman who became the translator for Cortez during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. So her name became synonymous for a traitor. An unjust accusation of course..

If you enjoy non-English lyrics, please react to Kaelan Mikla, who only sing in Icelandic. Laufey’s vocal style might interest you.

When the Warning reaches a massive international success the Mexicans who turned their noses up will scream "Viva Mexico". Sepultura had to leave Brazil to be famous. Iron Maiden is more popular outside the UK. The same story happened to a lot of bands.

"Malinchista" is one who is oriented to the historical character of "La Malinche" a kind of anti-Pocahontas. La Malinche was an indigenous woman from the outskirts of the Aztec empire in the deep southern Gulf Coast. She translated between tribes who spoke different languages (I believe, Maya and Nahua?) When Cortez landed in the area, she became his mistress and translated for him in order to rally the enemies of the Aztecs to his side, therefore, playing an essential role in the eventual conquest of Mexico. From this character we get two terms: a "Malinche" who is a high traitor (like a Benedict Arnold) and a "Malinchista" who is a cultural sell-out. (one who asserts that another culture is superiour to one's own.) Many a Spanish reactor not from Mexico is confused by the term because it is very Mexico-specific.

From what I have researched, apparently the most appropriate translation of that word is derogatory for a mexican person who has thrown away their culture and has appropriated the white english speaking culture.... it's extremely insulting, which is I think probably the trigger word that sent Pau around the bend to write this song. I can only imagine the girls reading some mexican review that calls Pau (or all of them) that word because they always wrote english songs. They have explained it many times that it is much easier to write songs that sound musical and sing well in English than in Spanish, but who cares anyway? English is the universal language (well, tossing love aside for a moment...), and to gain the largest audience for your concepts and ideas, you should publish in English. That's a fact of life. They are clearly very proud to be Mexican and speak Spanish more than English when they get the opportunity in interviews and when just hanging out in videos. Message: do NOT cross PAU

Malinchista is a cultural traitor (Word comes from the name of a historical Mexican figure). Someone that prefers non-Mexican things over Mexican things. This song is a giant middle finger to their critics.
