After that barricade landing the battered old Tomcat lifts his head and says "You ought to see the other three."

Warlock stole every scene he was in. One of the true stars of this movie. The looks on his face and especially his body language was amazing. I wonder if he could have had some connection to Iceman.

The movie wouldn't be complete without the legendary Grumman F-14 Tomcat, and the infamous flyby.

That F-14 came home a hero. At 1:02 into this clip, it looked liked a tired, old warrior who has finally come home. *

Maverick: Thanks for your service, darling F-14: Anytime, baby!

Cyclone hasn't got much of an option; Maverick was in the middle of an emergency landing situation. Cyclone flew Tomcats, he knows that before any emergency landing can be attempted; fuel,fuel tanks and any ordinance must be dumped BEFORE Maverick can aim for the barricade. This reduces the risk of both fire and injury to those aboard the carrier. Pinching the tomcat was certainly both an unorthodox and risky way of escaping enemy clutches. However waiting for the friendlies to pick them up could easily be 72 hours before any sign help could arrive. Mainly due to the wait for the politicians to sanction the rescue.

The f14 buzzing the ship was the best scene in the movie!!! Not to say that the movie wasn't great, but that is still my most favorite plane growing up as a navy brat, who's dad served on a carrier and was born in 1980. Top gun is still my favorite movie. Can turn the volume to mute and recite the entire script. Nothing will be as sexy as the tomcat!!!

This was just an amazing scene to watch.

yes and no, that was youthful Maverick, this is slightly more mature Maverick. It speaks to his character arc that he would do it, but not be boisterous about it. I like it this way, and think that it might ruin the scene in general. Might be an idea for an outtake to see if it would have worked or not.

Honestly, I would have flipped if Maverick took this cat home with him at the end.

Back on the carrier… in a stolen fighter! Imagine the debrief of this mission.

My blood 100°c moment.

Maverick will be forgiven that tower buzz. He was in the middle of an emergency situation that required the barricade to raised. Before he could land; the Tomcat has to be virtually empty of fuel,all external fuel tanks ditched as well as any remaining ordinance dropped into the ocean. This reduces the risk of fire and injury to those on the carrier. High speed passes would allow Maverick to dump fuel,even if it pisses a few 2-star admirals off. Flight safety is flight and they probably had a hand in writing the training and operations manual in the first place so they can't complain!!

Top Gun 3 is in production.

No unfortunately, but this isn't a stock F-14A either. Parallel universe Iranian F-14 with other engines shoehorned in. The original TF-30 engines would have been junk years ago.

If this was DCS the f14 would just stall because of AOA and crash into the ocean

From what i know, the f14 would stall in this situation if it were going full throttle like mav and goose's f14 in rhe 86 film. But this situation, the f14 is set on landing speed, so probably more managable even with one engine down

actually its a meme in DCS the f14 just stalls like crazy because of the AOA limiter when your doing a simple turn and when everyone (specifically the news) at landing speed. they still crash because of their AOA limiter going crazy lol

Yes, a Tom Cat loosing an engine on short final would most likely lead to a crash with the yaw induced, but who gives a flying F@#k. The movie is gold in bars in this day and age. I also love that the F18 landing changes so many times from three drop tanks to no drop tanks to again three drop tanks.

Many Tomcats have lost an engine on close final and survived, usually because the pilot isn't a nugget (new guy) but one with lots of hours flying the beast and can keep his / her head when things go to hell unexpectedly.

anyone notice that when Mavericks jet was about to land, the sun was right behind the carrier, but as he is landing and hitting the barricade, the sun has disappeared.

That's the Korean language and it's subtitles that have gotten cut off by the cropping to avoid copyright strikes.

I STILL don't get why the writers had to break off the nose gear so Mav couldn't do a proper landing. They'd still need to use the barrier anyway, as no way could they count on a working tailhook. Still, he could later claim to be the LAST aviator to land a Tomcat on a carrier...

he took off on a taxi way, the front landing gear getting knocked off by the catwalk of those tanks adds to the urgency of how close they were to crashing on takeoff.

The only flying F-14s remaining in the world are in the Iranian Islamic Air Force. Thae F-14 and the uranium enrichment plant were subtle digs at Iran in the movie.

Lame ending. Come on an F14 tomcat had any value to the US? It was an antique and was shown to be so in the movie plus it had no tail hook or front landing gear. The realistic thing would have been to fly it close to the aircraft carrier at slow speed, eject and let the rescue chopper give them a lift. Risking an aircraft carrier including all the sailers with an explosion for an aircraft with almost no value is unrealistic.

Top gun is nowhere like the original top gun. It's all ****
