@CornPop 2.0 I don't think Hangman ever really thought he was legit better than Maverick. He only showed that attitude towards the other topgun graduates. That "look of doubt" is more of a look towards Cyclone bc he was just changing the mission parameters to something much safer. @@urbanNegritude38 I think you're referring to the shot when he was flying towards the helicopter, in the transition from the pull from the deck. He made them rework that scene. production was trying to make him bunt the aircraft with a positive G maneuverer. He made the helicopter increase altitude so then he could load the jet negative g in the turn he was able to get so close his jet wash was hitting the helicopter causing turbulence.

waltlock is correct. Those scenes are real. The pilot (Frank Weisser) would pilot the craft, and Maverick would sit in the back, in the gunner/radar seat (I'm not too knowledgeable on planes and jets, Tanks and ground warfare are more my game). So... Tom Cruise was actually experiencing super high G force. I believe the director claimed (but never confirmed fully) that Tom Cruise and other cast were subjected up to 8G's while filming and being in the jets. Tom Cruiser earned his "honorary naval aviators", which I don't think they just hand out to anyone as he and another actor were the 35th and 36th to receive such an award. ;) It was real

Everyone's acting is phenomenal. Phoenix quietly admiring, Rooster watching and learning everything Mav does, Payback and Coyote going from giddy to realizing in shock Mav's actually gonna make it. Though I think Cyclone and Hangman are the most impressive, Cyclone being the commander staring at the monitor, knowing full well the audacity of Mav and what now he has to do for the mission. And of course Hangman, going from the arrogant, shit-eating grin all like "aight, let's see this old man try, either way it's gonna be entertaining," to "oh fuck he's actually pulling it off," to a final, quiet "damn" with a hint of motivation on his face. Last time I see this kind of facial storytelling was The Silence of the Lambs. When Mav dropped the bombs and it cuts back to Cyclone, and the way he looks it's like he already knows Mav's done it, himself being a top graduate and probably knows the capabilities of the planes just as well as Mav does. Storytelling masterpiece.

while they got a whole lot of real footage, this movie has also got a whole lot of CGI, such as the hostile fifth generation fighters, and the sequences when maverick dogfights all the graduates : the distance between planes coming in two opposite directions was greater than what they've shown. there's also the mach 10 sequence, especially during take off, the darkstar is CGI'd on top of an F-18. with all that being said, putting the actors in the backseat of the planes is one hell of a challenge, and it makes the cockpit scenes very realistic to see. the only recent movie i can think of that had similar aerial cinematography is Sky Fighters (2005), but even then, they didn't have the pilots flying in the backseat.

waltlock is correct.

Hangman’s reaction sums up this scene perfectly. Damn I preordered this movie after watching it I liked it so much. Tom cruise outdid himself.
Maverick saved Cyclone’s job and career by pulling this stunt, and Maverick proved to Hangman, that an older combat pilot can still dance in the skies. Besides, Maverick had Iceman with him the entire time. Iceman passed away and motivated Maverick to “Let Go” of the past and show the kids how Daddy did it! IMHO.

This movie was intense people really felt the adrenaline of this movie I remember people screaming or celebrating in the most intense parts this movie was a great great experience something I will never forget

while they got a whole lot of real footage, this movie has also got a whole lot of CGI, such as the hostile fifth generation fighters, and the sequences when maverick dogfights all the graduates : the distance between planes coming in two opposite directions was greater than what they've shown. there's also the mach 10 sequence, especially during take off, the darkstar is CGI'd on top of an F-18. with all that being said, putting the actors in the backseat of the planes is one hell of a challenge, and it makes the cockpit scenes very realistic to see. the only recent movie i can think of that had similar aerial cinematography is Sky Fighters (2005), but even then, they didn't have the pilots flying in the backseat.
Seeing this scene in theaters, so many people going "Holy shit...", "Damn nation..." "Fuckin hell!" was awesome to hear. This movie was so damn good.
