In the original movie, the hard deck was the safe zone where no fights were allowed. Jester lost sight of Maverick and dropped below the hard deck to avoid any chance of a mid-air collision. Maverick dove in and made the kill, which was essentially him making a late hit on Jester after the whistle was blown and he ran it into the sidelines. That's why Viper chewed him out.

I personally love that while Hangman is cocky, he's not a total idiot, or at least he's not completely oblivious. He was oblivious to Phoenix being eliminated, but he clearly noticed something between Rooster and Maverick and asked in a situation where Rooster was not gonna be able to avoid him, or so he thought. I also love the whole "what is with these two?" line. It kinda comes off as despite how cocky he is, even he wouldn't go nuts in the air over a personal vendetta. And he ended up just sitting back and watching the whole ordeal.

@@WoWPaladin6900 Rooster also ends with multiple kills. At the end, Hangman does indeed have two kills: the MiG from before the movie, and the Su57 at the end. Rooster has _three:_ the helicopter he shot down to save Maverick, then two Su57s he got as Mav's RIO in the stolen F-14. Mav, of course, also got credit for those kills. Combined with the three kills he started the movie with, he made Ace.

Three underrated moments: - "Come on Maverick, let's try not to get fired on the first day". How to sum up the character in one single line. - When Coyote's plane disappears behind the hill and you have NO IDEA if he's gonna crash or get back up. The shot was fit for both outcomes. - Phoenix and Bob having a problem with their engine, getting in a spiral and ejecting. That's how Goose died, so we know what is at stake...the difference: Maverick orders them to eject before it's too late to do it safely. He learned the lesson. And don't get me wrong, I say those moments are underrated, but the more praised bits are just as good or better.

What's interesting about these training flights juxtaposed to the first movie: In Top Gun, they had new music to highlight a TOPGUN student showing up his instructors. In Maverick, they play an old classic to showcase an instructor schooling his students. Cheap Trick vs. The Who. Both scenes were expertly filmed, and the action sequences in both were exhilarating. I saw Top Gun as a kid and thought it was neat for the student to teach the teacher. As an adult of my age, there is something satisfying for the "fossil" to school these cocky young pilots.

Watching this movie and seeing the pilots, and then seeing an interview with "Phoenix", they did fly in actual F18s in this movie. But in many instances, there is no rear man, because the "pilot", was actually in the backset, so in effect, they were the rear person, with multiple cameras on them, so that it would appear as though they were actually flying the jet. Still a good movie!

Believe it or not, most of the shots are actually CGI. Though they did fly real planes, most of the shots completely cut out the real stuff and replaces it with CGI. It’s a shame the CG crew doesn’t get credit for their work in this.

You know I have to give the writers alot of props, these kids could have been insufferable, especially the girl. But I'll be Goddamned if she isn't one of my favorite new characters. She really shined in a cast of great performances! Almost enough for me to wish to see more of them. I don't want more of them, but man they got really close for me to be all: I'd watch a spin off franchise where these kids are the main, with Mav being way back in the background. To be fair, I'd be way more open to this had it not taken 30 years for us to get a sequel, but yea.

Just goes to prove, before you make a challenge like 200 push ups, make sure the person you're challenging doesn't have years of experience. When rookies challenge authority, it doesn't usually end well. It does make them more humble when they get some sense slapped into them. Just something to think about.
