Embossing folder tutorial

I have used 3 new Tim Holtz embossing folders to show different techniques to help create stunning backgrounds for cards, mixed media etc. Here are ideas for colours and even how using the same cardstock and colours debossed versus embossed can look so different. I hope this video will inspire you to get creative with your embossing folders. While these are part of Tim's Halloween release you'll certainly see how versatile the folders are for year round makes. You can easily use them for small journal covers, backgrounds inside junk journals, vignette boxes and so many more projects. Let your imagination run wild!

    HI @greengirlstudio101. Thank you so much. I have already done a video on using these backgrounds on Halloween cards, which is on my channel, and will do one next month on making Christmas cards using embossing folders, but I think I'll use a variety of different folders including these one though, too.

    I designed those TH embossing folders while at Sizzix and its nice to see how various inks really bring life to them. The reptile folder was especially fun to work on as I was able to get the texture to fade out towards the hinge side to give it a worn leather look. Hope you pick up the skulls folder at some point, had a lot of fun putting that one together and seemed to get a lot of positive feedback from the crafting community.

    Thank you so much for your comment and great job on the folders. You bet I have the skull folder, I fell in love instantly and it's probably my favourite folder ever. I have made cards and last year used it on a Halloween journal page for a class I taught. I'd drop a pic but can't here, lol, but it is on my IG account last year. Plus I made lots of cards using it.

    Awesome! I'll have to check it out, I actually reworked the skulls folder, the original was more of a linear pattern of skulls based on artwork Tim gave me but he wasn't really digging that artwork after I finished so we changed the direction of it to make it more dynamic and "pop" and definitely glad we did! definitely my favorite out of the hundreds of folders I worked on over the years @@juliebrashart

    Gorgeous🤩🤩! Thank you for taking the time to explain your process as you went through! I am very new to paper crafting and your tutorial was very timely for me. I find I am quite drawn to embossing folders, especially the 3D ones. In my opinion, embossing folder cards have so much more potential than just backgrounds! They can be an entire statement piece by themselves. You've given me a great idea to pull out my gel plates and use up my acrylics that have been languishing in a drawer as I start working my way to investing in ink pads then embossing them in a folder. You mentioned using the Versa Clair on the paper covered in acrylic. Is it because of the metallic paint or should pigment ink be used on dried acrylic across the board because the dried acrylic is, in essence, plastic and the dye ink will not absorb into it as it would onto naked card stock? Thank you again for a great tutorial and for any pointers you can give🙏🙏

  • @juliebrashart

    @juliebrashart

    Thanks for watching, and yes, all acrylics create a sealed "plastic" finished so pigment inks (Archival, Versafine Clair etc.) are your best options there. I LOVE gelli printing and what a great way to use up the prints, right? Feel free to ask questions any time, I'm always happy to help.
