Embankment Substation. 57

Ойын-сауық

A bit of modifying in this update. I do a bit of scratch building and carve up the landscape to fit it in. see what you think of my new embankment substation.
I was asked about the fencing I used. It's buy a supplier on ebay called.

Just a note re the fence; as its a galvanised fence, it wont rust, so just weather the brightness down with a wash, perhaps? Excellent little side project from a great concept! Looks like its been there fifty plus years! Nice work!

Even galvanised metal rusts eventually after years of service. Rusty galvanised sheet roofs etc. Just rusts at a slower pace dependent on the quality of the production process. But I take your point. Cheers for the food for thought, maybe overdone the rust a bit. Atb Graham 👍

Looks so realistic. A pleasure to see. Like you said, the beauty of railway modelling is that it is never finished, always bits to do. An idea might be to have a bulkhead light above the steel personnel door, and/or a small light column just outside the compound. Being an electrician, I would suggest that !

Top job Graham. The roof needs some weathering along with the bottom of the fencing. Also may I suggest some vents as well. John

I don't think I could add anymore weathering to the fencing as it would look over done. Maybe you are looking at earlier footage, quite rusty now. As for the roof there is weathering but maybe not enough to show up on camera. Also mentioned by someone else. Will probably add more as it could do with some moss weeds etc. Vents are a good idea. Have since been thinking of adding more detail in the way of a couple of grilled vandal proofed windows. I guess I could keep on adding and probably will, but cheers for the ideas though John. 👍 😀

RAILWAY ELECTRIFICATION SUBSTATIONS ! I don't like to point this out, but the style of "sub station" you are scratchbuilding, is a classic Southern Region third rail 750v DC design. Even down to the SR Green access door ! The 25,000v 50Hz AC used on lines fitted with Catenary, which appears to be what you are modelling, judging by the stock seen on your layout. Had sub stations of a totally different design. There being much higher voltages to deal with, so different types of electrical parts !!! From memory one of the German manufacturers who produce working overhead catenary, also had a more suitable "overhead" type sub station in HO Scale as a kit. The German Railway overhead system is 15,000v AC, which obviously has similar needs and somewhat similar equipment to BR AC substations. The manufacturers being Sommerfeldt; Veissmann; & if they are still in business Vollmer.

This was not meant to be a specific substation really, just a random power source for the non electrified lower level of my layout supplying random rail equipment along the line and basically a removable diorama to allow me to film from this point. But all the same, thanks for the information. I will try and make it look more random and generic so as not to look like a specific type in the future. Cheers Graham 👍

@@WHP1980s please dont take this as me having a go Graham. Far from it. As I say its very minor nitt picking. It's your layout not mine and as I previously said, I couldn't do it myself and its outstanding. If your happy, then feel free to tell me to sod off and mind my own business.😂

Looks great and the 3d printed transformers are a great addition. I have a printer and modelled some relay boxes and a few other elements. I worked in consulting engineering and modelled substations every now and again for the projects. You may know, the concrete roofs were required to resist an explosion inside the building and they had small windows with explosion proof covers tied to the building with chains. Of course we don’t need that level of detail. Where did you get the fence? I did an example of a scratch built building based loosely on a substation building and I just cut up a rad board box to keep it simple for those who have never attempted it. Good luck moving forward and I will be watching for your up coming builds. Very nice layout.
