Talbot Moors: Episode 1

In this video we take a look at my new layout 'Talbot Moors', the follow up layout from Gowerton Parkway.
The layout measures 21ft x 9ft, and is based in a converted garage room. The layout has been under construction since June of 2021, and this video documents the layout in its current state as of June 2023, two years on since creation.
Please find below a link to my instagram page which contains more documentation of the build process to date.

Nice to see scenery rather than the easy option of retaining walls with different levels of track. The amount of time making all those trees must have seemed like forever!. It looks fantastic, so can’t wait to see what comes next. You have a new subscriber.

I think it's superb. So many layouts really overdo the detail to the negative, and in many cases 'less' equates to overall greater realism.

What a great looking layout. Love the weathering on the track. The 37 on the intro looks and sounds amazing. Glad to hear your new family are doing well. My 2 boys like nothing more than to help out on my layout. My 7 year old gets very excited about putting You Tube videos of my layout together. Subscribed!! 👌

I’ve made my 2 an oval of track which is on a small board folded up under the main layout…….. Lower Mapplewell! It’s theirs to do with what ever they want. Stops my 3 year old wanting to ‘Brum’ cars as he says on my layout!! Really interested to see your new layout develop 👍

The model railway is coming along well & your sceniced mainline provides an ideal location for filming block freights & passenger traffic. It is also nice to see the layout room complete with your railway memorabilia.

The TMD and loco stabling area look cracking, you do need more crap, trust me back in the late 90`s we never even thought about spending money to tidy depots up and oil, lots of oil, think about were your locos stop before entering a road and just go full send on the black oil mess in the 4 foot, also where the locos sit in the roads they would of dropped oil and crap over the years. Your main line looks the biz with bits of scrap rail here and there that`s 100% spot on, to go the extra mile take off some of your concrete cable troughing lids and toss them to one side.

Not often I watch British layouts as you will see from my channel I am a European modeler of German N gauge! However I was very impressed that you managed to do all this while having not one but two new born children. Congratulation of the new addition to your stock 😛As a single Dad I appreciate the time it takes to bring up young children and even more so when they are born early with issues I salute you both sir! I love that you weather all your own stock too I too am doing this with some success you will see. I have to do my videos in both German and English for my followers hehe you only have to speak English. I am about to start a massive new layout in my living and dinning from downstairs once I have had the partition removed and the horrid asbestos too. Welcome back Marcus...you have been missed. Heartiest congratulations on the new additions to the family. Glad to hear they are progressing well. Love the new layout and looking forward to watching each new episode. I am surprised with the big fiddle yard taking up half the layout. I would have thought you might have considered 100% scenic with the fiddle yard underneath. Perhaps you did? Good luck with the layout and the family. Cheers, Bob

Thanks for the well wishes bob ! I did indeed consider the file yard under the layout, but it was a bit to complicated to get done in the time I had free before the babies arrived. My extension will sit in front of the fiddle yard, which will in turn effectively make the room have scenics on both sides. Cheers !

I respect the "railway through the countryside", as you say, far too many models are track with scenery made to fit. I also like the mainline has no complications, so there's less risk of needing to access electronics, considering the seeming difficulty of access to the track underside. Though I assume some coloured light signals will be introduced in time?

Thanks Neil. There is a lot to be said for simplicity. Signals are on their way, a mate of mine is making me up some modules to control them at the moment (Electronic wizardry far beyond my skills!)

Looking good. Totally agree with code 100 rail it is slightly oversize by then code 75 is under size especially with a modern layout and rail sections in use today. Same with sleeper spacing I spend time on the real thing and TBH don’t have any issues with peco sleeper spacing. Worth also noting that most of the time you only really see the track when there are no trains on it and bearing in mind the track centres are HO scale it reduces any dimensional discrepancies hope that makes sense. One comment I do have is that you would not place fuel tanks directly in line with a siding as any errant train would cause a major incident.

Oh no, the Hand of God. What a shame, I was in the zone then, your layout is so realistic, but the illusion has been dealt a severe blow now. Would have loved to have heard that 08 fired up and seen it moved out the way under its own power. To me the aim of modelling should be to eliminate the HoG (even when demonstrating or testing) and only use your hands when absolutely no alternative, and even then try to imitate what the Hand of Man can do (or rather his machines such as cranes and jacks). I see it like hand ball in pool. It's a fowl 😀 Anyway, your layout is fantastic, and the way that train came on at the beginning I at first thought was the real thing. Keep up the good work.
