My dad never used to want to put his stress and worry on his kids, so he never let on when his job got him down or bills were hard to pay. Instead he would play this song at full blast and dance through, singing at the top of his lungs till me and him both had huge smiles on our faces. I didn’t know this till years later, and to this day I still play this when I need to de-stress

Ehh…for newer generations that were either born after or didn’t hear this song growing up, Olivia’s song is probably sick, but for people who heard this song all the time, on the radio, on MTV, in bowling alleys, at the mall, wherever, to hear Olivia's version, it’s like…”Uhhh, is Elvis okay with this?”. I don’t quite think Olivia understood just how popular that song used to be. She probably thought it was either not very well known or that it’s been long enough where people have forgotten it and that enough people had never heard it before so it would be okay to copy and no one would be the wiser. That was a mistake. She's just too young to realize that most people on this planet were alive long enough to hear this song. She’s honestly luck af that Elvis Costello was kind enough not to sue the shit outta her, cuz other artists like Katy Perry have been successfully sued for millions for copying only a teeny 7 note section of another song let alone the entire thing. It really is just Elvis’ instrumentals with Olivias voice over it with maybe a few little changes but if we’re gonna be honest here, it’s the same song. Lucky girl.

I did not think of this song at all listening to Brutal the many times I listened to it. There are some similar notes, but with the amount of music around, that's inevitable. Also, after reading various articles about her album and sounding similar to other songs, where is the producer on all this-he plays guitar on the album.

Back then, computers were huge banks of machines of reel to reel magnetic tape, with the operators basically just standing there and changing the tapes every now and then. I used "computers" back in the 70s........basically you used a terminal input, all hooked up to the central "Computer" in the city somewhere. They were often unreliable.

I find it funny that alot of people are getting mad at Olivia Rodrigo for using a similar guitar riff on Pump It Up for Brutal even though Elvis Costello himself had no issues with her using that riff and explained it's just part of making rock music. God bless Elvis Costello. Also, Olivia doesn't make the beats of the song. She just writes the lyrics and sing it and a producer makes the beats for her.

I just re-discovered this song. I used to roughhouse with my dad to this song when I was a child. Whenever he would be taking care of my sister and I while my mom was running errands he'd put this song on the stereo and all of us would just spaz out. We'd pillow fight, wrestle, tickle torture, and chase each other throughout the house. Those were the simplest, yet funnest times of my life. My dad is gone now, and although I've been depressed ever since his death I can't help but have the biggest smile on my face hearing this song and have those memories rushing back to me after so many years.
