Song Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"
[Chorus]
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
[Verse 2]
And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"
And you may ask yourself, "Where is that large automobile?"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"
[Chorus]
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
[Bridge]
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
[Verse 3]
Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water from the bottom of the ocean
Water dissolving and water removing
[Chorus]
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again, after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
[Verse 4]
You may ask yourself, "What is that beautiful house?"
You may ask yourself, "Where does that highway go to?"
And you may ask yourself, "Am I right, am I wrong?"
And you may say to yourself, "My God, what have I done?"
[Outro]
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, look where my hand was
Time isn't holding up, time isn't after us
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was
Same as it ever was, same as it ever was (I couldn't get no rest)
Same as it ever was, hey let's all twist our thumbs
Here comes the twister
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was, same as it ever was)
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was, same as it ever was)
Once in a lifetime, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground

@The Stan Man; Dear, you have clearly and absolutely not understood the text. Then it is also better that you absolutely do not respond. Because with the experts you now come across as absolutely enormously stupid. For those who don't know, they are going to agree with you, but don't forget at the IQ test they are all going to end on 75, just like you.

I was at a Penny's store shopping for some nice work clothes. I have to go to the big and tall section. My son was with me in his stroller. I stopped by the suit jackets and this song started playing in the store. I put on a large Shaquille O'Neil brand jacket and started dancing like David Byrne. Made my son crack up and my wife embarrassed.

i think this dude was so far ahead of his time, this is like the best song I've ever heard lol a lot, lot deeper than you'd expect by the lyrics alone, if that makes sense. you really have to be in a special place to appreciate it.
Reminds me of my belated brother Lloyd (Rocky) Woodard. I was just a kid when he joined me, mom, my other brother and step dad on the beach back in the early 80's. He had this small portable radio with a cassette and he played this song over and over. This is an anthem to my brother, Rocky - brings me so much happiness when I hear this song because it reminds me of him. He was part of an African dance troupe and he played all of the percussions and kalimba. I understand his appreciation of this song - it has an African under-beat.

I turned so many people, friends family on to this song 40 years ago , still love it, cutting edge at the time it first came out !
When this band came out there had never been anything like it. It blew my 14 year old mind. When this particular record came out, I had become a different person than the kids my age. Everyone laughed like hell at this song and called David Byrne a lunatic, weirdo, etc. But the ones of us who "got it" knew he was brilliant.
