ELVIS: Aloha From Hawaii FTD Review / Discussion - EAP Society Season 1 Episode 06

Elvis's "Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite" concert is a landmark moment in Elvis's career.. with many, MANY, releases over the years. In this episode, Jamie and John look at the latest FTD CD set of these shows and extras, and discuss why this is an important release - even if you have the others!
EDIT: Jamie here! In the video, I mention the flute player being different for both nights - not sure why that was in my head, but it actually was the same person both nights - Gabe Baltazar (November 1, 1929 - June 12, 2022)! Thanks Paul Gwyn for pointing that out, and also that because the 2nd show was at midnight, there's not a full day off between them. Thanks for that Paul, we really appreciate it! That's what makes this community so awesome!

Hi, John! I appreciate that! Part of it might be that we currently have zero time to do any outside promotion or social media due to everything we're trying to get done. Once the new set is together (did camera tests today) and the last of season one's episodes are edited, that will be easier to do - though everyone sharing the channel and spreading the word will help us a ton, as well! 😁

The arena was set up for an audience around 6000 with a stage being a lot larger than Elvis's usual and a screen behind the stage. I bet Colonel was dying having to look at all of the empty seats. It was done for charity but he was thinking of the souvenirs that could have been sold. I'm pretty sure the arena was renovated to be a multi venue complex. 1 or 2 smaller and the original that is less than half of what it was. I've never been but I read the history of the building a few years ago.

That's interesting - we'll have to do some looking, because the split wasn't mentioned when I toured the place or at the event function in 2013. Definitely something we'll look at for an Aloha 50th retrospective - thanks for sharing!

@@EAPSociety I got it wrong with the renovation to the HIC. The big arena still holds up to 8800 but the add ons included smaller seating capacity venues. The intimate 2000 seat room is not the place Elvis performed Aloha from in 73 as described in this video though. It's probably my getting confused as to what was said in your describing the arena and how small it was. The seating capacity was cut for TV production by around 2000 from the 8000 Elvis had played a couple months before in 72 which was originally the date set for Aloha.

@@stephenmilburn7622 It's all good! But still, very interesting - one of these years, we'll have to go there again and we'll scope everything out and show exactly where it all was. I'd love to do it this coming year for the 50th, but we don't have the budget for that just yet. 😁

Saw only Burning Love live on b/w tv but had to go out and play outside backyard as it was the Aussie summer 73. In the 80s the VHS were released of Aloha and 68 Comeback and advertised on tv. As bonus footage we get Elvis overwhelmed with the satellite event interview with the tv reporter. The reporter asked Elvis to take a break and compose himself. The 68 Comeback has the bloopers reel. The blue suit goes for 40 minutes recorded by the professional Jp film crew. Circulating around the bootleg scene. And showing the hotel and Elvis's dressing room. I have a quadraphonic hi-fi. Haven't set it up yet. Thanks for another review.

Wonderful review guys of these two great concerts on this new FTD release I have not heard it yet though but have a late 1980s vinyl release and a CD release from sometime in the 1990s . I have always thought the sound got a little lost in that arena and it was not until the early 2000s that I got a CD with a different cover that I noticed an improvement in the sound . This is the one where I first heard the Jack Lord introduction just before he sings the beautiful I will remember you which caught me by surprise . My question to EAP is before this CD release the mention of Jack Lord and Hawaii Five 0 in his introduction was cut from original and subsequent releases for many years and is this because Hawaii Five 0 was a hugely successful CBS tv show at the time and Aloha From Hawaii was shown on NBC ? Great work guys love your channel cheers Carl Australia and yes my whole family watched Aloha From Hawaii live back in 1973 but on a 20 inch B/W tv .

Hi, Carl! First off, I LOVE that you saw it when it aired! Very cool, no matter what TV is was! On the cuts.. you might be right about the Jack Lord intro, though there were some other cuts made, too - so it might have been for LP runtime, or just to make a more "tight" listening experience.

Hey guys. Great review. I have the 3 DVD set that came out in the early 2000's but this would be nice to own. The trend is to issue these boxed sets at slightly bigger than 7" single size which is quite neat and easy to handle. I note that the RCA Legacy edition is from 2013. Always interesting watching your videos guys because they are informative and one can make an educated choice on whether to buy the particular items you're showcasing. Keep up the great work guys. You know, to be honest I'm not sure - doing all of that would take like 5 LPs (and FTD rarely does complete with their LPs, likely for that reason) - so I'm guessing that if it did happen, it would be just the main show... maybe with the extra songs.

I can understand the thinking they have there, but since the DVD set has been out of print for so long, even having a new release with the audio and exact copies of what we got on the DVD set will be great for anyone who missed out on the DVD set. I think we'll have sound improvement on the bluray, and maybe slightly less compression, but it's more about having everything in one package that's nice about this.

It would also really depend on the music arrangement of Rock-A-Hula, since all of the other songs they did do were changed a decent bit from the versions on "Blue Hawaii." It definitely makes for an interesting thought experiment, though - perhaps John and I can explore that in a future episode!

same sound, no change, nothing new for both shows........ As for all of the takes of the mediocre extra Hawaiian songs, Elvis never sounded so bored, like he couldn't be arsed to record them and he shouldn't have in the first place and they were done for the likes of the BBC in the UK that has no commercial breaks and filled in for commercials. You haven't heard Steamroller Blues from Memphis 1974 then have you?

Oh, we've absolutely heard Memphis 74 - and it's an amazing version. But the Aloha is still definitive in our opinion, overall.
