Elsie Tanner vs Ena Sharples
Ойын-сауық
Elsie Tanner's scenes from the classic 1961 Coronation Street episode. Elsie is convinced that Ena is behind a poison pen letter which she's received. She accuses Ena in the street and a slanging match ensues.

There's never been better acting - by anyone, anywhere - than in this scene. RIP Corrie, as it was and was always meant to be.

I've gone deep into the classic Street rabbit hole. As an American, I'm seeing these for the first time. Those early episodes were amazing. This wasn't so much a soap opera as it was a 30 minute weekly continuous play. Amazing acting, writing and camerawork.

I know right. To me it was like the 1950's Show Playhouse 90. You couldn't send Bert Bauer (Guiding Light), Nancy Hughes (As The World Turns) or even Alice Horton (Days Of Our Lives), there. They wouldn't be ready for it.

American here too, and I absolutely love soaps, and these old UK ones are so fun to watch! And I adore Pat Phoenix in these scenes!
What a scene. I especially liked the aftermath of the argument where they both knew they had gone too far. Superb acting.

Brilliant point - that's magnificent writing for you. (How's that for a quick reply? 🙃)
What a star Pat Pheonix was....
pure class true to life and miles better than the show now
That shot of Ena and Elsie standing at opposite ends of the street, like two gunfighters in the old west facing off is just genius.
Wonderful acting ....fantastic work..and all done LIVE!!! x

Absolute Corrie classic
What a woman! She created a character worthy of Bette Davis or Gena Rowlands.
Fantastic writing and characters.
Elsie Tanner and Ena Sharples used to scare me when I was little. My parents used to watch this every night. It came on at 6.30pm. So as a result, I think I saw every episode.
Albert Tatlock and Ena Sharples,Annie Walker and Bill Roach as Ken Barlow and Patricia Phoenix as Elsie Tanner to Arthur lowe ,Corrie at his best & legends ❤️ R I P Kenneth Barlow the only Survivor from day one,Love the Early 1960s to the Music,Fashion and the way people looked back then❤️ ,Nowadays its not like the past times.Gotta laugh at some of the scenes from 1960 times 🤣
An emphatic win by ena sharples. Deep down Elsie tanner knew that ena sharples would have hated her enough to say everything in that letter to her face and ena had the same strength of character that Elsie herself had. All of the fight in elsie disappeared after the vehemence of ena's denial. She accused ena falsely and it was telling Elsie didn't challenge her as she knew ena was right.
now thats what you call a proper argument!! no foul language just good intelligent insults! :p
The Streets could use another Ena Sharples, give Tracy a run for her money.
2 dragons rearing up for a fight 🤣🤣🤣 🔥🔥🔥🔥🐲🐲
streets glory days Annie walker would turn in her grave if she knew the goings on in the street and could do with another ena sharples she is sorely missed..

When Cs had some great characters. Black and white too.
The street fight episode? Fantastic!!
Awe, wish was about 'back in the Ena Sharples' era. Also never repeated the Black & White episodes 'ave they!?! Cheers for this.👍
Well said James, Elsie...now there was a paragon of womanhood. I was 6 years old when i knew i loved women, and it was all thanks to Pat Phoenix. Bless her, may she RIP.
Tony Warren was clever when he came up with the idea for Coronation Street. After the first episode aired it became a huge success and Granada Television asked him to write more episodes. Today more episodes are screened than ever before. Tony Warren has passed away but his classic creation is still loved.
Dennis Tanner’s body was gorgeous in the kitchen scenes : )
Len,s just of to weatherfield swimming baths to give some lessons 🤣
This leaves Coronation Street of today standing. Not only better scrip writers but better acting from great character actors
Ena ''Battle Axe'' Sharples / Elsie ''Hurricane'' Tanner.
7:47 "poor old defenceless woman". Blanche used to say the same in the 2000s. Funny how it was the battleaxes who said this.
Fabulous! Much better than today's rubbish script-writers, following each others' plots and introducing filth and violence every week. At least this was 'believable' !

I don't mind filth and violence if it's believable, but it's not remotely nowadays.
What a battle axe lol
I much prefer the old story lines with the squabbles and grudges and gossip that always came with apologies and cheers back at the Rovers than the modern story lines of gang rape and psycho killers. The Platt house got so grim that I had to switch it off after a while. These old clips are a comfort. Well done.
I’m from the US, and it stuns me the word “bitch” was used on television in the early 1960s! And Dennis was a cutie then!
and the band played on lol
when the street had great characters and was worth watching, sorry but its well past its prime now, which i reckon was between the early sixties till the mid 80s its just slowly gone downhill since then and i think its just about time it retired
ITV Classic.
4:44 she got the right one!
Dennis Tanner had a nice body back then!
To think the likes of Ena, Albert and Annie were born at the end of the Victorian age, 19th century is insane. I grew up in the 70's and loved all these characters. Good old Bill is still with us, amazing.
Love it classic corrie

In my opinion Yes it has since the McDonald's in 1989 to the Battersbys arriving in the late 1990s(97)has gone down hill since so not watched it since 1997 ,The Early years were great times when it Broadcast in December 9th 1960 ,62 going on 63 years thats an achievement there ,Since the late 1980s ,Prefer the Annie Walker years with the Greatest Generation of legends back then ❤️
Look at the backdrops when they didn't have real background scenes. I believe the exterior shots were all filmed in a studio.
Hang on! People were allowed to call each other a bitch on TV back in 1960s?! lol

Well all I have to say is ,That was back in the times before PC and Coronation Street at its spectacular best ,These legends of Corrie were back in the day, Memorable,May they rest in peace,Bill Roach from Day one is the only Survivor and at 91 Still great as his character .Thanks for the great memories of Corrie from the Early years ,Today's Generation don't cut it like the past times.
Imagine those two were still arguing in the street, the ratings will go up and beat Eastenders, lol 🤪😂😈, I must say, this was fast paste of the 1960’s coronation street.
