Lovely childhood memories watching as a small child. My dad watched fr 45 yrs.

I wasn’t around in 1960 but being from the northwest myself and watching these old episodes reminds me of how my older relatives and neighbours spoke.

I was born in 1949. I wouldn't change that for any other time to be born.

The dialogue between Ena, Minnie and Martha is brilliant and funny.

This was all done live in one shot. Amazing isn’t it.

Most of television was in those days. Even action series like The Avengers. The plots had to be structured so that the cameras could move easily between the different sets in sequence.

Over the following years, both Mrs Walker and Ken's accents became much posher than in these early days, didn't they.

It might be out of a time I weren't born in, but so much better than todays corronation street. They really have murdered it.

Yes, and you are so right here. I haven't watched the show in 15 years and I don't know how I lasted that long. These older episodes are real gems, and thanks to Auntie Corrie for uploading them.

So many people whine about the current Corrie, but just imagine American soap operas. Coronation Streer is leaps and bounds better than American soap operas, so you still have gems to me.

I can't bear to watch it now either. So many good performances here, but maybe Jennifer Moss stole the show. Ernst Walder is still going strong at 92 years old, even though his Polish accent was rather dubious.

I grew up in the 60s and that theme music is ingrained in my brain as my mother watched this every day. AND now I know why she always said 'oh, give over!' 😂

I love the end credits being outside their houses it’s so cute I haven’t seen these episodes before Thankyou for sharing xxx

Loved this, a classic. Loved the ending - how they went down the street naming those in that show by their house number. For the life of me I cannot think who lives in all the houses now.

Watching Classic Emmerdale now ( years after this). Lucille reminds me a bit of Belle Dingle!

Emily’s first appearance.( uncredited, but she was ‘Miss Nugent’ who Mr Swindley called in whilst he went to call a doctor for Ena).

@cotswoldcuckoo775 He was. He went on to star in two series called "Pardon the Expression". It was a spin off from Coronation Street where Leonard Swindley (Arthur Lowe) went to work in a department store. Betty Driver, later to play Betty Turpin, played the canteen lady. The first series was OK, with some really duff episodes and a miscast manager, but the second series was very good, with a much better manager and John Le Mesurier in a couple of episodes as one of the directors of the company.

I wasn't even born when Coronation Street screened in New Zealand. Years later I would hear my mother and aunties talk about these people with excitement.

Del "What?" Grandad " Well, we got a card 'ere. From Brenda and Terry and the kids, Shirley, Shane and Sean. So 'oo's Brenda and Terry?" Del " Well, it's Shirley, Shane and Sean's mum and dad, innit?" Grandad "Oh. Did we send 'em one?" Del " Well, 'ow could we? We dunno 'oo they are, never mind where they live!" 😂😂😂

For years we got a Christmas card each year from a complete stranger. There was nobody in our street with the name they were addressed to. I'd forgotten all about it until I saw this.

The sayings are solid gold. "I dont boil my cabbages twice"..."Your Lily's getting very luggage in advance" I'll be waiting for opportunities to crowbar those into conversation 😂

I loved Lynne Carol's character, always referred to her daughter and son in law as "our Lily", and "our Lily's Wilf", she idolised them, but they hardly bothered about her, which I think she knew deep down, Lynne Carol was a very good actress, especially as she was only in her 40's in reality, the rain coat, beret and round spectacles all came from Lynne Carol's own theatrical props trunk, the spectacles actually had no lenses in them. It is interesting to see in these very early episodes they haven't come up with the idea of allotted seats, Martha here is sat where Minnie always later sat and visa versa, in another episode it showed Ena sat where Martha is sat in this video, I liked their order of rank, Ena was the boss, Martha second as she was never afraid to answer Ena back, and Minnie was the third, usually two paces behind the conversation. When they did the stupid thing of not renewing Lynne Carol's contact, it was never the same without Martha, and there is no doubt they lost the chance of many good storylines between the trio.

Overflowing ashtrays and wipin 't glasses wi' damp teatowel did nobody any 'arm.

Fantastic, takes me right back. Not sure if I seen them at the time but I wasn’t far behind. Incredible stuff.

The woman who comes in at 21:04 is actually Emily Bishop, (aka Miss Nugent as she was then known) albeit played by another actress.

Ok, 4,995 more episodes left..

The exteriors were built to one third the width of real terraced houses in the Manchester area. That and the avoidance of reflections is why the cameras never pointed directly at a house, always at an angle. There used to be some houses in Stoke that were incredibly narrow, and looked about the same size as these.

I notice Annie's speech is a lot more down to earth in these early episodes as in "what you gawping at"😂

I love the ending credits, as the camera dolleys along the street showing the flats and character/actor names. Ena's flat next to the Rover's... I had no idea it was there originally! And very fitting that it looks like the entrance to a church!

Annie in this episode sounds almost like Bet did in the 90s! "Does it look like flamin' June?' Can almost hear her telling Jack 'Well, you 'ave a think what could be wrong, tiger.' (Bet's name for Alec!) When did she become very well spoken? 😂😂😂

Boy these Shows are sure 180% from US Soaps. In The US The "Wives" would be cooking breakfast, seeing their kids off to school, or working as Secretaries or smoking Cigarettes or having Coffee.

Peace on Earth - ha, not likely with kids in the house. It was Harry’s magazine. Dirty Harry! Oh, it wasn’t used for that sort of thing. Oh well. You could scrape her make up off with a shovel! I like Esther. You can see the boom mic come down into frame when the old ladies are talking. Whoops! The women at the pub remind me of Mrs Brown and Winnie in Mrs Brown’s Boys. Ena’s faint - another bit of interesting acting. There hasn’t been any pashes yet - no lip to lip action. Wonder when the first one will be.

The woman was just an extra, nodding in agreement, the idea of someone else sitting with them they soon dropped the idea, have you also noticed Martha and Minnie are not sat in their usual seats, this episode is before they were given their alloted seats. In some other very early episodes you could sometimes find Ena sitting where Martha is sitting.

So Christine leaves her mentally unstable mother alone at no 13 to go to no 5 and help Esther look after Lucille ( who’s pretty independent anyway)?

The actor who played Ivan Cheveski was a bit of a looker! In fact, he was gorgeous; no wonder the show’s creator, Tony Warren was in a relationship with him, albeit a secret one…

In 1960, homosexuality was illegal and men like Tony had to hide their sexuality. What a terrible society to have lived in. Thankfully the Harold Wilson government abolished that stupid law in 1967 in England and Wales.

I am an American and up until Pat Phoenix died it was the best TV going. I stopped watching it got so out of touch with the caliber it was I just couldn’t stand it.

Anyone on here that has a cockney accent? If so who?

Minnie Caldwell didnt get as many lines as Ena and Martha at first - thank goodness it was Martha that got killed off and not Minnie i loved her character

@@Lucy0809 Yes it was a very big mistake to kill off Martha Longhurst in May 1964, as I'm sure many of you remember she died with a glass of sherry on the table in her second home the snug, during a party. Coronation Street producers etc admitted it was the biggest mistake they had made. Lynne Carol (Martha) was only in her forties in reality, hiding it all under a beret, horned rimmed spectacles (with no lenses in) and an old rain coat, Lynne dressed the character herself, the trade mark spectacles etc. Ena was the ring leader, with Martha not afraid to answering Ena back, and Minnie was the quieter of the three, often 3 paces behind the conversation!

The trouble is there just isn’t the talent today either to write it or act it, this Coronation street has characters that are all a bit funny whereas today it’s all grim and miserable, today it’s no longer entertainment it’s all stupid young kids and politically correct stories.
