Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond. Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop. The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal". kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZabmsOOnpe_m6Q.html

Thank you for reacting to this song. This was my sister's favorite song of all time. She was murdered when she was 39. We grew up together, close, she was only 2 years older than me, and this song was HER song, and everything about it was like her....she was a bright spirit, a blue sky on a sunny day. Everytime I hear it now, I think of the best of her and know she is up there in the blue skies. So, it means a lot to me, I play it when I miss her. I am so glad you liked it. Peace and love.

I'm 41. I loved this song as a kid. And now when I hear it, it brings memories of my own kids reacting to baby Groot dancing around to it in a movie theater. As they are becoming grown men, it's a pretty special memory for me. Music really is the last magic we have and I don't think we value it enough for that.

I worked on this video... January 1980... spent the night painting the floor black.. got to watch Manhattan Transfer do a show for their record execs in the stage next door... and then worked all day the next day doing 4 videos. Jeff Lynne was a bit aloof but the rest of the band were great... Seeing the video brings back fun memories.

This song was taken from the "Out Of The Blue" album which was released in 1977 and by 2007 had sold more than 10 million copies.Written and produced by ELO frontman Jeff Lynne. Jeff Lynne wrote the entire album in three and a half weeks after a sudden burst of creativity while hidden away in his rented chalet in the Swiss Alps. It took a further two months to record in Munich. Side three of the original double LP consisted of the symphonic Concerto for a rainy day. In a BBC Radio interview, Lynne talked about writing "Mr. Blue Sky" after locking himself away in a Swiss chalet and attempting to write ELO's follow-up to :A New World Record. It was dark and misty for 2 weeks, and I didn't come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and it was, 'Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.' I wrote Mr. Blue Sky and 13 other songs in the next 2 weeks.

I know you did not choose to react to this classic ELO song because I recommended it, but since I have been one of the many people who did suggest it I am going to take credit for the fact you reacted to it!! You made my day, for real! This is Jeff Lynne's most Beatles like song. Now let's see if I can keep the magic going, and suggest you now try "Roll Over Beethoven" by ELO. Many groups have done it, and they were far from the first, but I believe their version is the best, as they actually are backed by a symphony orchestra every day! This song opened the second Guardians of the Galaxy - I can't hear it any more without seeing Baby Groot dancing! And you are so right, Chod, this is the group that totally owned this sound!

So great to see a great live performance by them. I got to see their Out of the Blue tour, and that string section really stole the show. They played inside a laser-shooting fiberglass UFO, and the cello and violin ran around the stage, at one point the fiddler was on the bass' shoulders. I wish prog rockers had done a better job documenting their shows on film or video. This clip is a treasure.

This song was the climax to a four song sequence called ‘Concerto for a rainy day’ and is even more powerful when heard that way due to the nature of the three songs which precede it. They are also worth reacting to in their own right but if you don’t plan to do that, then treat yourself to a listen to the whole side 3 of the album ‘ Out of the Blue’ off camera and you will see what I mean. The other three songs are, in sequence, ‘Standing in the Rain’, ‘Big wheels’, and ‘Summer and lightning’ and together they not only capture everything about our English summer but provide one of the best and most uplifting sequences of music ever (IMHO of course). Maybe given that you did the live version you could justify going back and listening to the whole concerto as recorded in the Studio for the channel at least you can be certain it will end well.

Chod, I know you've only listen to very few Beatles songs, but ELO's style owes a lot to them. If you had heard 'A day in the life', 'Eleanor Rigby', or 'I am the walrus', where The Beatles incorporated orchestras and choirs, you would hear the big influence. Even the use of descending bass lines that Jeff Lynne has used regularly is a very Beatley element of his song writing. Jeff even got to be the producer on a couple of tracks for the surviving Beatles when they overdubbed their parts onto some of the late John Lennon's unfinished demo tapes. Jeff also produced for Beatle guitarist George Harrison on George's solo work, and also joined the supergroup 'The Traveling Wilburys (along with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison) Some more trivia, the video, even though it was an official one, has the final coda lyric wrong. The vocoder line is not a repeat of the bridge's "Mister blue sky", he actually says, "Please, turn me over!" as this track was originally the last one on the A side of the vinyl album.

Great song....with this one, listening is best, especially since part of the songs outro is edited a bit. Also the vocoder at the end says, "please turn me over" as it's the last song on that particular side of the album. I've been told that in polls, this song has been voted as the happiest song out there. I agree.

This is an edited playback version. The original studio version from the album is longer and more complete.

I had this song on a 45 record when I was a kid. If you're under 35 you probably don't know what that is. lol

Came across your channel today (30.03) subscribed....loved your reaction to ELO (sound of my youth!) - one thing i would say, and you heard a snippet of it in the lead to Mr Blue Sky, please take the time to listen to 'Concerto for a Rainy Day' - 19 minutes of pure theatre - it took the whole of side three of their double ablum Out of the Blue - if you could react to it, even better...but either way please take the time (if you can), you will not be disappointed.
