I take my hat off to Elizabeth for doing these interviews. She was wealthy and famous and did NOT have to say anything to anyone ever about herself. Many of these interviewers were quite rude and very intrusive. They kept bringing up the fact that she had been overweight and they kept using the word "alcoholic" trying to bait her or shame her. Elizabeth never lost her cool and handled them all well. I think Elizabeth simply wanted to help people with addictions and was brave enough to speak out. She also decided to use her celebrity to bring attention to the AIDS crisis. No celebrity would speak up and defend gay young men dying of that disease. Nobody cared. Elizabeth helped to change that and raise funds for AIDS research and charities. Again, this was a gutsy thing to do at that time. Elizabeth did NOT have to say or do anything, if she chose, for the rest of her life. However, she did act out of a kind and generous heart and wanted to help.

We all have known her forever it seems. We lived in LA, And in the Thirties and Forties, if you were a local, there was a good chance you would see one of these people. Many decades later, she was at the hospital I worked at. There was a crowd below, as the news blared she was there. We have a strict law now about patient privacy. Anyone who called the media would be fired. Our floor nurses were grilled, I knew them, and believed they had not called the news crews. It looked like the only one left was Miss Taylor herself. She felt she needed the publicity! God bless her.

One more time I see that programs that were created many years ago are still in place. This program that Elizabeth Taylor was referring to: Tough love, sounds very similar to the one use on: Intervention (close family members and friends gather around expressing their love for the person with the addiction problem, but drawing the line in what they will do or won't do for the person with the addiction problem) I love the fact that Elizabeth Taylor asked her kids for a couple of hours to make her own decision. As I read once last year; this kind of intervention might not be so effective if the person with the addiction problem does not go under his or her own will, but pressed by loved ones. Love the fact that it looks that she went to treatment under her own decision after all.

I am reading the comments below, and I do agree that the woman interviewing Elizabeth is not warm or doesn't seem empathetic, but I do think it ends well, with Ms. Nicholson wishing her "a very happy new life, as the new Elizabeth Taylor". I am also a fan of Elizabeth's, she is an amazing actress, but she IS human and people seem to put her on a pedestal. By the way, my father was from Swansea in Wales. I'd been there as a child, and it is the most beautiful and breathtaking country!

I think it's her tan and the film that makes her look yellow, not sever liver damage. Anyway, it's interesting she said she wanted to be buried in Wales, but this was over 20 years before she died. She is now buried in a tomb near her dear friend Michael Jackson.

Decent interview love Mavis, she is talking about what Elisabeth wrote in her book, she’s deep & probing gets people to really talk about themselves, Elizabeth is wonderful here as you catch a sense of her vulnerability and humanity, you don’t get interviews such as this today look at some of her other interviews you will see she’s not a dragon she has a fabulous interview with Kenny Everett.

After Reading some of the other comments, I see their are lots of people who feel the interviewer is rude and some that don’t; we all perceive things in different ways; so as in many of the other comments, I’m sure there will be plenty of people who disagree with me and some that won’t, but that’s wonderful, as wouldn’t life be awfully dull if there where no difference of opinion.

I waited on her for a month in Chicago when she was doing "Private lives" in the early 80's and she was a mess but she was also fabulous so don't get me wrong but I saw it for my own eyes. Room service would bring up a huge silver tray with food and she said "put it on the floor for the bird" and the bird ate this expensive meal. I was amazed because I was hungry! Her last day she left for the Theater I organized a goodbye for her and all the doormen and bell boys gave her a rose and it was wonderful! On the street 30 fans clapped and shouted love to her. It was a moment.

well first of all most European interviewers are not impressed with American /Hollywood types as a rule..and secondly Elizabeth was not always as kind referring to Richard before his death..in interviews..so perhaps that was noted by someone who was also Welsh

  • @MetalLaLa

Richard's widow Sally chose to have him buried there I believe, this was noted in a biography of Elizabeth that is an excellent read. Perhaps due to jealously? We might never know. I think it's a shame when such wishes aren't honoured by family when a person dies, especially if there is any malice behind it that isn't thought about in hindsight.

A very strong and calm interviewer with intelligent questions about alcoholism. And needed to handle Elizabeth who was also strong and quite dramatic and a bit maudlin in her emotions as those with addictions tend to be.

@I know it all. I know it all. Elizabeth would likely have come to the interview knowing she would be asked about her addictions and her stay at the Betty Ford Center. She was used to people tip toeing around her for years but I think she wanted to be a more authentic person at this point in her life. It was new territory for her and she still struggled to open up comfortably. Mavis was just doing her job and dared to persevere a little longer than Ms.Taylor was used too, but in the end it was an honest and fair interview.
