Taylor and Burton WERE the most Iconic REAL couple of the screen. They loved, they fought, they made up and they'd try again. Two huge personalities that were THE MATCH for publicity. EVERYONE FED OFF THEM ! It was amazing to watch as it was happening. They were like magnets to eachother. They truly lived their lives to the fullest. Very few of us would ever experience that kind of love and passion. How really lucky they were.

fob1xxl - Great celebrity, adrenalin and passion (mixed with love) does not always make for a happy marriage - or a full life. Elizabeth confided to a friend (after the couple divorced - for the second time) that she was "so tired of playing Virginia Woolf - and had enough.") Richard and Elizabeth both struggled with alcoholism and, on one outing, (while Burton was on "the wagon") Elizabeth ordered a bottle of whiskey for her husband - telling him that he was "boring" while sober. (Richard gave as good as he got when it came to Elizabeth). The point is that these things take a physical and mental toll, and the famed Hollywood couple would pay a big price. Mr. Burton would pass on at age 58 in 1984 - a frail shadow of himself from his acting heyday. Elizabeth, to her great credit, spoke openly about her addictions to alcohol and pain medications (during her later years) and became a shining light for many of those going through the same struggles. May they both RIP.

I was 23 and not well acquainted with Elizabeth or Richard, but my mom had tickets to Private Lives in LA in late 1983. I went with her to see the play and it was delightful, funny and charming. I was so glad I got to see Richard perform before he died. Since then I've watched many movies with Elizabeth in them and enjoy them. May they both Rest In Peace.

When you see Taylor looking at him, she seems in awe of him. I know what she meant how “after Richard all the others were really just there to hold my coat”. Nothing could compare to not being with your other half. Tumultuous or otherwise your heart mind and soul don’t understand such minor details. Someone might as well tear you in two and you can try to go on but everything will just be shades of gray because it knew what it was to reach the heights and the depths. It’s transformative. Like a near death experience nothing will ever be the same. It doesn’t always mean a happy ending. In this dimension, at least.

"Night of the Iguana" - is my favorite Richard Burton Film (with Ava Gardner). Elizabeth Taylor is exceptional in everything she ever did. Intervention was good for Taylor (and all of us - as we got to appreciate her even more). I met Elizabeth Taylor (at a Fashion Show). I was a model (during her department store perfume line). She was stunning - even when along in years, and she was very kind.

Not everyone’s love can be a fairy tale but two different kinds of people do fall in love. I hate how people say stop “romanticizing their love”. Their love was whatever they felt and did and it’s in the past but if someone would just read about their relationship you would know the truth. Substance abuse and infidelity would ruin any relationship.

Another excellent video. The narrator, biographers and behind-the-scenes people are always so well-suited to telling the subjects' love stories. And of course the photographs and clips are wonderful. Elizabeth and Richard were truly an iconic couple. I vaguely remember the start of their love story (I was very young). They were always in the Press, on TV, or at the movies. I never realized, until this doc how much they were a part of my life! Even though they are both gone, their love is still felt. Speaking of their love story, I saw Debbie Reynolds dancing like a bullfighter on the cover of "Life" (at least that's how I remember it). My mother had to explain divorce and why the Pope was so mad at them. As much as I love your series of iconic lovers, I think you glossed over Eddie's "betrayal" of his family and Elizabeth's responsibility in it; you mentioned Richard's distress in leaving Sybil & his daughter. Just sayin'🤗

Can you just imagine for a coupla minutes, what it would be like to sit down with these two, have a drink or 5, and talk about a simple topic as the weather? That commentator/former acting colleague gave an impression of Elizabeth Taylor pretty much fading away and having no life after Burton's death----when the exact opposite is true. She kicked her booze/pill habit, lost 60lbs, (regaining her glamorous beauty) saw a resurgence of her acting career for awhile, wrote a bestselling book (called Elizabeth Takes Off) AND founded a fragrance empire which is still going strong and making bank for her descendants. Not to mention her steadfast support of Awareness and fundraising for Aids, which was a big deal at the time. It should also be noted that---as much as she adored Richard, he was the SECOND greatest love of her Life, AFTER Mike Todd. In fact, she said in her book how Burton once told her that, had Mike Todd lived, she (Elizabeth) would still be married to him and he (Richard) wouldn't never have had a chance.

Richard Burton was on a hot streak in the 1960 s. Beckett ,Night Of The Iguana,The Spy Who Came In From The Cold,Virginia Woolf,Anne of a Thousand Days even films which most critics would call average The Sandpiper, and The VIPs Richard always stood out!!If my memory serves Richard got into Oxford when he was only 15!!! There was a quota on Welshman at Oxford so his mentor /professor changed his name from Jenkins to Burton. It’s hard to believe but English was Richards second language!!! Richard also was a Bombadeer in the RAF during the Second World War. When asked by a journalist what he learned in the RAF Richard replied”Fear”!!!! To his credit he was able to quit drinking. But could never quit those damn ciggies. When he died Richard Harris was here in San Diego in a revival of Camelot. Harris the Irishman and Burton the Welshman were great pals and partners in nocturnal debauchery. When Harris was ambushed by a local TV crew here in San Diego and asked if he had a comment about the death of Richard Burton he replied” he’s not dead he’ll never be dead to me”. Nor to his thousands of friends and millions of fans from San Diego to New York to London and Cardiff to Melbourne and Perth to Sough Africa and literally all over the world.

Seemed more like lust and a toxic relationship. I mean, she’s Beautiful and all but 8 marriages and she still died alone and ill. That’s not success at all. I guess when you are so wealthy and can have a biggest diamond 💎 in the world at that time, your ego gets in the way of being your authentic self. I don’t see her loving herself and her children. How was she as a mother? Her life has been known portrayed by success in her acting and her beauty, but what about how she was a mother? Who was she underneath all those jewels, wealth, beauty and make up? I think she needed to respect herself more and love herself more, rather than making a man fulfil her needs. I mist give it to her, I have never seen anyone in a wheel chair as glamorous as her though. Rest in peace.

I never knew that Burton was not initially attracted to Elizabeth! Also that he never thought much of her acting and said she was stone faced! Wow just shows how things can change.

I knew that kind of love and it's so very scary thing you never get over it the expression that Love hurts is true it shakes you to the core of your soul we were not rich poor but we loved each other it's hard to explain I knew what Elizabeth went through she loved him more than he loved her but even in death they still wanted each other rest in peace Elizabeth and Richard

All part of the script. This 'stuff' is not real. It's to sell. Sell books, films, 'icons'€€€€. Hollywood sure is for the gullible.

I well remember the "Liz and Dick" days - they were the ultimate beautiful couple and were so glamorous when they were together. The tabloids had a field day with arguably the most famous couple in the world. Everyone wanted to know more about them. I wish that they could have stayed together until his death. And I'm sure that Elizabeth Taylor took that last loving letter from him with her when she died.

My conclusion is that lust, greed, jealousy and competition could ruin any relationship. Let me not mention drugs and alcohol. Moreover, when chemistry prevails pure friendship in a romance it does not end up well. Who knows? If Richard was not such a womaniser, he could have stayed with Elizabeth and they could both be happier. But - that was just life.
