I'd forgotten about Mavis- she was a fantastic interviewer. Diana's Mosley's comments about Hitler are fascinating and her honesty is refreshing. I do agree, like the rest of her strange oddball sisters she is rather thick and lived in her own privileged world. She obviously believed she had done nothing wrong. So many others of her class at that time admired & supported Hitler and saw him as a bulwark against Stalin's communist Russia. They spent the rest of their lives whitewashing their past and rewriting history.

This acknowledged that the U.S knew Somoza was a ruthless dictator and was committing crimes against humanity but was prepared to look the other way because he did what the U.S told him to do which allowed to the U.S to exploit and make money out of the Nicaraguan people. I'm not sure what you call hypocrisy but that sounds very much like Western hypocrisy to me.

@Dickie Chaznick Setting Mrs. Mosley's merits and demerits aside for the moment, if I may, I dispute that good diction is a frippery. Perhaps you don't know that diction is how you speak entirely, including choice of words, and so is not limited to vowel formation and pronunciation, which might be what you mean. What comes out when you open your mouth frippery? I can't believe you mean that. As to her demerits, she might have had endless amounts in spades for all I know, but she doesn't seem to be a holocaust denier in this interview. If she meant to deny it here, she failed spectacularly, for she acknowledged it.

@Dickie Chaznick Thanks for your reply. Firstly, suppose someone said: "Dickie Chaznick an idiot? I don't see how anyone could possible claim it!" Nothing wrong with that, not as to form nor meaning. On to the next matter. Regarding her comments on the German atrocities, I take your point, as what I found an acknowledgement was, I agree, not a thoroughgoing one. But I don't agree completely, as it was easily close enough to one to flop as a denial. You surely know more about her than I do, and I admit I mostly forget what was in The Rules of the Games, written by her son Nicholas. Certainly, if elsewhere she denied the Holocaust, then I deplore her very memory. Other deniers might on that account visit her grave to leave flowers; let others still drop by whilst walking their dogs, if you get my meaning. My point is merely that her remarks her seemed an acknowledgement, and did not constitute a denial. Again, you might know more about it. All the best, Dickie. P.S. How do you get text rendered in italics?

@Dickie Chaznick All very interesting and made all the more vivid by your relating the personal tangent. Might you have noticed her about now and then, or spoken to her? Unlikely, if she was anything like Nancy, whom one can only imagine seeing through a telescope.. It's her sister who interests me most, though. Love in a Cold Climate, The Blessing, and Madame de Pompadour are old favourites. Quite a wrecking crew (the five of them, wasn't it?) with good points and bad ones, perhaps both in quantity. Having many detractors is ordinarily a bad sign, but by no means always! Thanks for your reply.

Shallow, entitled, superior, slightly delusional...if anyone else says these things without the 'posh' they are cut down like weeds. She fell for Mosley so everything about him sparkled for her, and still does. There is nothing new about finding a dictator charming and likable for heaven sake. Psycopaths do that to you unless you are a critical thinker with sound values. She is wrong. Peace could not have been achieved, Hitler did not want peace, he wanted Europe. The British Empire was destined to fall in any case, as the colonies fought for and gained independence. Hitler wanted an Empire too, there would have been no peace. Chamberlain tried didn"t he and Hitler promptly invaded Poland then France. Hitler's anti Jewish policy was crystal clear even before he gained power. Mosley too. So she is backsliding here. Disgusting. It is true that Hitler is not the only facist to have committed war crimes against humanity. But so what? It only means that these crimes are not unique to Germany and so democracies should be vigilant, and not support local facists, the way she did.

It's ironic how outright open Stalin lovers don't get half the hate this honest, poised, elegant lady does. It's so easy for simple-minded idiots to paint things, especially those related to war, black and white. But the truth is that they are not and Lady Mosley understood that from the begining. She says things they way they are and she clearly states that what Hitler did was inexcusable yet he is solely seen as pure evil while other dictators on his same league get praised. This is a fact that no one else has the balls to admit to. She's not excusing Hitler, she only says that he was charming to her and she wouldn't have thought he would do such a thing; and she wasn't alone, millions of German people who were completely ignorant of the Camps thought the same. They were fooled, yes, but that makes them no criminals.

In the war they scoured Germany for jews and sent them away on numerous trains east. Millions of German soldiers fought in the east and were involved in or witnesses atrocities and murder. The German people knew and it's utterly absurd to think they didn't.

And finally, it's individuals like you I despise; characterizing people who are disgusted by the crimes of the Nazis as "Stalin lovers" is somewhat pathetic. WW2 in Europe literally was a good v evil. Whilst the allies were far from perfect, the German behaviour on a mass scale in ww2 was arguably the most evil in human history. The fact that einzatgruppen troops in the east literally took babies, children, toddlers and shot them because of their race - in a planned, state action - beggars belief. No amount of revisionist history changes that. Thank fuck amongst those with a scrap of deceny mitford, Moseley and co are despised and their memory despised by all other than a minority of scum.
