December 14, 2023
Today we share with you some images of the railroad history of St. Thomas, Ontario to expand a bit on previously produced several videos touching on Railway City.
In this video we are expanding on the theme of railroad history in the aforementioned city beginning with the St Thomas elevated park.
We’ll have a brief aerial flyover of the park built upon Michigan Central Railroad’s (MCR) viaduct over Kettle Creek.
In the AFTER SHOTS we will explore Michigan Central Railroad’s vision for operations in St Thomas circa 1913.
We’ll also have a look at an interesting NYCRR drawing that relates to BX interlocking tower.
Thank you to the Elgin County Archives for preserving collections of unique and valuable railroading documents.

This is an amazing view from above of this iconic bridge. I'm so happy that the city of St. Thomas took these steps to preserve it's heritage via this park. Martin had a chance to walk over it one summer... Thank you for your meticulous research, James. Just amazing.

Great video James. The viaduct/elevated park has been on my bucket list for a number of years. Maybe this summer. Thanks.

Hi Rich. I hope this is the summer. While you are there you might wish to visit the Elgin County Railway Museum, if you have not already done so. That once is on my list for this summer. James.

Hello James, Interesting what has become of such a railway bridge. We also make cycle paths out of old railway lines. But I am for rail transport, the train and the two-way vehicle are very nice. Thanks for sharing and have a good and relaxing week. Best regards. wolfgang

Greetings to you Wolfgang. I would suppose that the pedestrian bridge, and the signal gantry are as long gone as the semiphores represented in the drawing. I envy you living in a country which has retained some of the vintage semiphore signals that I see from time to time in modern day videos of German steam locos. All of that fine historic signalling apparatus was disposed of many years ago in Canada. Thanks you my friend. Stay safe. James.

Good video, James! In Leipzig, Germany, a city walking trail similar to this is under construction under the name of "Parkbogen Ost". Unfortunately, money is limited and there are other projects of greater importance. So it's not clear when Parkbogen will be completed - work is currently put on hold. I also like the views of the old blueprints and your explanations. Best regards. Dirk

Ja. Hallo Dirk. Bleib sicher. James.

Hi James, great coverage of what was. I am glad to see the trestle wasn't just torn down, but wonder if the rail line would have been a benefit today, helping keep trucks off the 401, and much better for the enviroment. But then again most of the industry has been outsourced as well. Crazy world we live in. (Rick )

Hi Rick, and thank you very much. Crazy indeed ! Did I see you comment on the Oakville Ford Assembly Plant in a recent video ? Is it closed permanently ? Cheers. James.

@@FrogandFlangeVideo I have heard conflicting dates as to when the final day will be. They were originaly going to retool, reopen for electric vehicles, but Ford has pushed that back to 2027 to start. The market conditions don't support EV sales at this time and probably won't in the near future. CN has already removed some of the 86' boxcars from the pool service to this plant . Have a good weekend ( Rick )
