CN BRIDGE INSPECTION - HATCH CONSULTING & SEMA

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

November 13, 2023
On this beautiful autumn day we filmed the operations of Hatch Consulting together with SEMA during their process of conduction a thorough safety inspection of the approximately 1,100 foot steel bridge that crosses the Grand River.
We met the employees of both these companies on site and we thank them for sharing some of the information associated with what they were doing.
Hatch Consulting provided the engineering forces that performed the detailed safety inspection. SEMA supplied the very specialized hi-rail equipment and its experienced operators which enabled the Hatch engineers to examine the bridge from all angles.
This was a lengthy procedure - both Hatch and SEMA were on location for about two days.
The SEMA crew drove from Quebec with their truck. Although Hatch has several offices in Ontario, it was my understanding that both engineers were from one of the Quebec offices.
For truck enthusiasts: This FE series Volvo truck is a hi-rail equipped unit with a Swedish-built SVABO crane . The FE series come with diesel power in the 250-350 HP range and a 12 speed transmission.
At 09:30 the on site CN foreman instructs the inspection crews to leave to bridge to give way to oncoming CN 580.
Power for CN 580:
CN 4705 GMD GP38-2
CN 4770 GMD GP38-2W
I hope that you enjoy this one.

I always wondered how they inspected the undersides of those types of bridges. Now I know. Great video. I wonder if the guy in the water at 6:33 is there to catch anyone that falls in or is there just fishing? I also wonder if any part of that truck clamps to the rails to prevent it from rolling sideways off the bridge or do they just limit the weight in the bucket and how far the arm stretches off the CG.

Good morning to you littlewing. Thank you for your visit to FFV today. And for the interesting questions. Although I am no expert of the inspection operations, I have seen them before at other places. 1 Guy in the water - just fishing 2 Clamps - no, the truck is balanced with weights on the opposite side to the crane arm portion. Just like a regular crane with the weights on the backside. 3. Limits - although I was fortunate to have lots of conversation with the inspection crew, I did not think to ask about a weight limit for the crane; I am sure that there must be a limit, though. James.
