Electrolysis of Aluminium Oxide - GCSE Chemistry | kayscience.com
Aluminium oxide has a very high melting point of 2050°C. Cryolite is added to lower the melting point to 850°C to save running costs by lowering the heat and electricity required to keep the aluminium oxide molten. Aluminium forms at the cathode and oxygen forms at the anode. The electrodes are made of graphite (carbon). As they are very hot, the oxygen reacts with the carbon forming carbon dioxide. Over time the graphite electrodes burn away so regularly need to be replaced.

Glad it was helpful!
At 6:25 you said “ they flow from the cathode back to the anode “ where it should’ve been the other way , right ?

Hi, thanks for the question, and in the context of electrolysis of molten aluminium oxide, electrons flow from the cathode to the cations, and then electrons flow from the anions to the anode. This cycle is repeated over and over. Hope that helps?
at 8:27 the 3rd qt the formula is wrong bc the oxygen shud be 30 2 for it to be balanced not 6 as that would make it 12 right?
