Electrolysis is the break down of an ionic compound using electricity. First the ionic compound must be melted or dissolved in water, so the ions are free to move. The electrolyte is the substance being broken down and the ions are always free to move in electrolysis. The negatively charged ions are the anions and they are attracted to the anode. The positively charged ions are the cations and they are attracted to the cathode. The cathode and anode are dipped into the electrolyte where there must be a gap between them.

The video is great - just some thoughts on the precise language. I would always say strong electrostatic forces hold ions in a an ionic compound together... I think it helps to keep the word bond for covalent as it has a 1:1 connotation. Its the same thing as strong electrostatic forces between metal ions and delocalised electrons and I don;t say the metal atoms are bonded by metal or metallic bonds. Also - I have started not using cation and anion at all, or cathode or anode... just positive electrode and positive ion and negative electrode ion. this is because I think you can get 99% of the marks without using the cation/anion words, and I find students get hung up on using / figuring out the words to use rather than the chemical principles.

How does the money back guarantee work for students and parents? We mean what we say...if your child does not get at grade 9 or 8 doing the higher paper, we will give you your money back for the account you paid for. We truly believe if a student uses KayScience properly, they will be guaranteed to achieve a minimum grade 8. See the power in KayScience for yourself and encourage your child to use the full force of KayScience! Therefore to qualify for your money back, the following requirements have to be met: The student must have watched every video so that each video icon is green on their videos and quizzes page. The student must have completed every quiz having achieved at least 90% in each quiz. The student must have done the gap fill and questions in each video and have evidence of this in their exercise books. The student must show evidence they have used the exam resources we have, as practicing exam questions is critical to getting exam ready. This is only for annual subscriptions. We will not offer money back on any shorter term subscriptions, as learning takes time and cannot be rushed.
