Electrolytic cells use an electric current to drive a thermodynamically unfavored redox reaction. As in galvanic cells, oxidation occurs at the anode and reduction occurs at the cathode. An application of electrolysis is the electroplating of metals, which uses an electric current to deposit a thin layer of metal onto the surface of another material.
