@Hau Ngo -- thanks for the update, man. I just watched the two videos back to back, and the disappointment you feel is palpable. I can imagine feeling that way after the wait. I don't know if you've thrown in the towel on this path or not, hopefully not, but I have personally found The Mad Electrician/Stephen Madrosen's channel to be a superb resource as far as detailing various ways to strengthen your rank as an applicant to the apprentice program. I'm 46 and my mathematical skills are rusty as hell, so this is going to be an even more arduous process for me, but it feels worth it. I've been with the same company for almost 8 years now, and I just have too little to show for my investment, so I thought it was time to really switch gears. Even though I'll be taking a pay cut, I've decided I'm going to try to enroll in the pre-apprentice course, and apply for a job as a Materials Handler. I'm also going to use that time, probably 6 months or so, to build an ironclad portfolio, complete with cover letter, résume, any letters of recommendation that I can get, and start putting in weekend hours doing industry-related community service. It's a tall order, but I would feel worse if I just maintain my present course and sustain what feels like comfortable mediocrity. Whether you decide to try again or not, I hope you're successful with whatever comes next. Check out that channel if you're not already familiar with it. I would've been absolutely clueless without it, as far as tips to give me an edge.

It's hard to get in brotha, you got cw's and people from other trades trying to get in. Do some material handling or cw work through the local you're applying to. Your test score should be good for 2 years at other nearby locals so apply to them as well. I've applied to 4 different locals and got ranked as good as 19th and as bad as 112th lol fingers crossed for all of us!

Sucks. I don't get it, why would they want/require a candidate with experience if trades are usually aimed towards candidates fresh out of High school?! This is a little bit discouraging since I don't have construction background neither, which other electricians apprentice always say you don't need it. There must be some other criteria they failed you on.

Well I believe that the “not experience needed” only applies to kids fresh out of high school. If your in your mid 20’s I’m assuming they want some sort of experience. Any assistance/ helper duty even if it’s short like several months it will look good. Or having a experience working on heights.

Im fresh out of high school and I have the test coming up next week. I studied about every day since graduation, in hope my test taking abilities and reading comprehension will make up for my experience. If I do get an interview and by a miracle get the job then that would be amazing, but my back up plan was to get my CDL, take a reinterview, and if I don't get it that time then ill be 21 hittin the road

Your results are not as much a reflection upon you, but much more rather a reflection of the system. If you really want to be an electrician, you can simply take adult education classes at a vocational high school, and simultaneously get a job with an electrical company (non-union)... The initial pay will be low for no experience, but you will start accruing apprenticeship hours for your license immediately.... IF you are already working an unrelated job where you get much more money, you may be able to continue that higher-paying job, and work part-time for the electrical apprentice job.... (this of course depends on the hours and schedules of each job).

Sorry to hear. These ibew locals suck sometimes. you were probably one of the best candidates but didn’t check their BS criteria. Wish you the best of luck. Also if you’re still interested in electrical work, your CDL could qualify you to become a lineman.
