Electric Ray facts: also known as torpedo rays and coffin rays | Animal Fact Files

Electric rays are marine fish that use electricity to defend themselves and stun their prey. There are dozens of electric ray species and they are found nearly worldwide. Electric rays can produce over 200 volts of electricity which is stored in modified muscles that appear kidney bean shaped. These muscles can weigh up to 1/6th of the electric ray's body weight! Electric rays are typically left alone as predators don't want to deal with the electric ray's electricity! Even people can get knocked out by these animals, which can make for a bad situation underwater... Electric rays look like pancakes with tails. These fish use their tails to swim through the water. They don't have stingers; they don't need them!
Scientific Name: Order - Torpediniformes
Range: tropical to temperate marine waters worldwide
Size: 1-6 feet (30.5-183cm)
Diet: crustaceans and other invertebrates, fish
Lifespan: 10+ years

At one point I was on a biology trip about five miles out on the ocean to collect animals, and my teacher got shocked by one of these. He was initially stunned, but he recovered very quickly.

2:12 From the top they kinda look like a horseshoe crab swimming around. And that's really interesting that they don't have any natural predators. Thank you for excellent video. 😊👍🕊

Also might be because if you stepped on one it would be like stepping on a torpedo (modern sea mines).
