Electric motor to transmission connection! (Jeep EV Conversion)

Hey everyone,
My name is Daniel Rosario and I am in the process of converting a 2001 Jeep Cherokee to electric. I hope to use this youtube channel to educate others on electric vehicles and inspire other students like myself to engage in engineering projects to support a greener world. Finally, someone that is doing what I have thought would work! I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota with a factory 2.5L and a 5 speed tranny. I have long said that the tranny is agnostic to the power source. Yes, I do think regearing a manual tranny would work better with an EV setup, still, gear ratios are extremely important. I like how you are 360 degree aware with your project. I particularly like your methodology of star pattern tightening as all old school wrenchers will applaud you for doing this. Many Blessings!

Great job with the video! A little tip when putting the clutch and flywheel together, try to keep them as clean as possible. Spray the mating surfaces with some brake clean and wipe any excess oil or grease that may have accidentally got on them off. Also, not sure how the pilot bearing works with the electric motor, but on traditional engine/trans mating, there is a spline tool you use to make sure the flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate are all aligned correctly before torquing them down. If not, a wobble or vibration may be induced. Otherwise, great video and I wish you the best of luck….even though this is an older video, good luck!

Very impressive. The key thing you successfully accomplished was research. I've been procrastinating on this project for 3 years. I have the Truck, took out the engine myself and all I have to do is remove the remaining ice components and put my electric engine in. Great job kid.

Back when I did it, I didn't have access to premade adapters or couplers. I had to machine my own. And use a random forklift motor from ebay. And build my own kit controller. And use garbage lead acid batteries. Whatever you do, PLEASE do not use lead acid batteries. Use LiFePO4 batteries if you can. Lithium Ion is also OK, but a bit more dangerous and more picky.

This is a cool project, i have rebuilt alot of ICE,transmission, and differntial. For a long time i have been researching the idea of swapping a electric motor with least 300-350 pounds of torque capability too a simply transmission bell housing. IMO a decent electric motor has better torque muiltplcation effect with a good transmission gear ratio and rear end. The electric motors are being sold in diiferent power levels. Question: What battery cell, pack, acid, are you planning too used. But because of the instant torque of these electric motors..make sure your transmission is too task. My personal choice would be a TH400...very strong in stock form and very simple too rebuilt.

Being a DC motor, you can control the speed by adjusting the votage so I would suspect he's using some sort of voltage regulator to adjust the speed. Would be similar to a rheostat adjusting the voltage to dim a light bulb.
