The big question for this video is: How many times do you think I said "that little" something? 😂 I am so happy to finally share another episode with you, please let me know what you think and what you would like to see in future videos! 😊🔋🙌 So glad to have "Don in charge" in this video too explaining all our mechanical integration concepts.
Novak adapters specialize in doing jeep tcases they might be able to manufacture that adapter for you. Also check out the np242 tcase! It has 2wd, awd, 4lock high,4low lock. With all that torque you might want 4wd on the street! Looking good! Cascadia stuff is cool!
Seriously this is some of the best technical EV content on KZread. I like that it is coming from a quantum scientist too. Well done on your growing channel.

Omg, thank you for your kind words! ☺️☺️
It is great to see content like this, and small businesses pushing the boundaries in this area. I think that EV conversion of old vehicles is an extremely profitable business over the coming decades, and more and more conversions will bring the price of key components down to achievable costs for many consumers and DIY enthusiasts.

Thank you! Yes, me too, haha, we have a concept but not good enough YET to present on KZread. But soon! 😊
Such a nice project! I often wondered why a DC to DC converter isn't used alone in an EV to handle the 12 volt load, rather than a DC to DC converter to charge ANOTHER battery to handle the 12 volt load, since high cranking amps and such are never required as in ICE vehicles; in other words, why not just size the DC to DC converter accordingly?? (Tesla even pathetically used a lead-acid battery until recently...)
Subscribed just for this series.

I’m also an owner of a TJ Wrangler. Mine’s a ‘98! I’m happy that I found your channel, since I’ve been thinking about doing an EV conversion myself. Do you guys think you will sell conversion kits in the future? An all in one, on a tested platform, would be a great product.

Thank you so much, I am happy our content is helpful. Wow, what are you converting? And which battery chemistry are you using? I would say it really also depends on how you are planning to use the car. Thermal management is not only for cooling but also for heating. We have seen several conversions without liquid thermal management that work for their purpose.
I'm enjoying see you two on your EV conversion journey! I took my Jeep out on some trails last weekend. It was sublime! You're really going to enjoy this build when you're finished. Don't know what EPS you're using but I found the Prius unit has more than enough power and doesn't require any integrated control at all! It has its own torque sensor to determine how much assist it gives. I'd also suggest at some point, upgrade your suspension to adjustable control arms mostly because it's cool but it'll give you more suspension adjustment. Keep up the great work!!

Really enjoyed watching all these videos back-to-back on a wet Sunday. Thank you for posting and sharing! A question; will you bench test all the components, BMS, drivetrain etc. before mounting back on the Jeep? I assume so, in which case I will look forward to the video.

Thank you! That sounds like you made the most out of a rainy day hehe. Some of the components we will test before we integrate them and also combinations to make sure everything works together - that's the plan for now - but could change a bit because for some of the things once you made the connection and wiring it's hard to take it apart again - so it will be a combination between some bench pre testing and testing once its integrated.
Hi Veronika & Donald, greetings from Indonesia. I found great knowledge here. Please explain more about Vehicle Control Unit. Does it cover lighting, safety, air conditioning, heating, interface display, entertainment, steering assistance, braking and safety systems? Brand, model, price? Thank you.

Wow, hi to Indonesia! I am in Croatia right now hihi. Thank you for your interest. We will do a video about the VCU once we worked on it and figured out all the details - but, yes, in general, everything that you mentioned will be controlled through the VCU - it is from AEM and it has a nice user interface that allows very easy programming. We will definitely talk about all the details soon. The only thing we won't have that you mentioned in your list is air conditioning. I decided against it, we rather take the top off!

Wohoo, hi to Ecuador, that's amazing!
Great project and as a fellow TJ owner, I love following along. One thing you may want to be conscious of are the driveline angles. It may not be bad at stock height, but your projected transfer case location looks like it will significantly shorten the front driveshaft which may lead to increased vibration. Conversely, lengthening the rear as you have should vastly help that issue too! Can’t wait to see it complete. All the best.

EV Death Wobble. Fellow jeeper here and I agree. That will be scary.
I love to see all the components there! How do you cabin heat and air conditioning? I know my Bolt just does resistance heat into a small coolant loop and a traditional heater core, and then has a separate air conditioner. Also, one more missing piece I'm curious about: My Bolt has a high voltage distribution box which is basically just some contactors and fuses and current measurement; do you have something similar, or just connect everything directly?
Great progress! Looking forward to more videos. Quick reminders about why you are using DC batteries and AC motors would be helpful for those who haven't seen all past videos (or a link to your video explaining the AC motor choice would be great). Thanks!

Interesting comment. Some people need more details, and some want more entertainment. ☺️ right now we are up to around 20-30k, we will make a video about cost and our future plans to reduce the conversion cost by using more parts from scrapped EVs once the project is all done.
Very cool your using a jeep to do this on. I have always thought a ev would be a great wheeler. I have a 1991 wrangler. I am Just not sure how it we'll handle the hard impacts and bouncing on trails. I don't know enough about ev parts or the cells. But its got me thinking about doing a swap.

We are really looking forward to taking the Jeep off-roading. And yes, we will put some effort into figuring out the right way to mount and protect the batteries, but for sure this is possible. The modules themselves went through a durability study at the OEM - we are reconfiguring but the way we build them will be very similar. Once we have all that figured out, we will of course share it in another video. Thanks for your interest! 😊
Glad to watch newly uploaded video clip! As expected, the process is on favorable way! I have one question. At the end of the clip, you mentioned that 'cooling and heating' battery system for warm and cold atmosphere in your region. Does it mean that, with your vehicle, you can 'set' the ideal temperature in the battery sector, like using a button to turn on cooling or heating function? (as we know, the distance we can go with electrified vehicle gets shorter in cold days!)
@ElectrifiedVeronika
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, we monitor the battery temperature on each individual battery module and set upper and lower limits for initiating cooling or heating of the fluid that flows through the cooling plate. It will be an active liquid cooling system.
@sigol_ajae

@@ElectrifiedVeronika Wow. That could be an invention which does not exist in current electronic cars from huge manufacturers. Preventing fire because of high temperature and increased battery efficieny in cold weather. Can't wait to see the upcoming outcome! Hope to watch another interesting video. Thx for replying!
@ElectrifiedVeronika
2 жыл бұрын
@@sigol_ajae well, most OEMs actually do active liquid cooling right now (just the very early EVs and some manufacturers went the route with passice cooling, for example Nissan Leaf being air cooled..) - I wish we could have such strong cooling to prevent a fire in an emergency case, but this would definitely not be the case. Really, if you have for example an internal short in one of these cells, temperatures increase so fast that you can't stop it with a cooling system..but we will have other safety measures like thermal propagation pads and fire resistant materials to protect the passenger compartment in the worst case scenario. For the efficiency in cold weather, the active heating system will definitely help - a heat pump like Tesla is doing would have been something cool too, but we have a different solution right now. Wow, long answer, thanks for the input and comments, I will use those ideas and questions for upcoming videos 😊
Looking at buying a hero like this to the a similar or same conversion. What do these components shown in the video cost at this point?

Awesome!! why do you decided to go with that VCU??? my kit came with the DILITHIUM BMS CONTROLLER, do you know anything about it?
@ElectrifiedVeronika
2 жыл бұрын
I don't know about the BMS controller you use, but I will look into it 😊 We decided to go with AEM, because we have good contacts there plus we know that AEM works with Cascadia Motion who is our inverter, motor and DC/DC converter/on-board charger provider and that made us very confident that the communication between the components would work.
Is the speed reducer much lighter than manual transmission in current generation Wrangle JL? I'm interested in doing EV conversion on a manual JL without the 3.6 engine.
Do you think I could fit a 2014 Nissan leaf skateboard battery pack under my 1971 early ford bronco ?
This is so cool! I actually think it would be amazing if some of these conversions could be crowdfunded and put together to send to the people in Ukraine. I actually think because they are so quiet & efficient it could really help the ukrainians fight the Russian occupiers!

How resilient to vibration are the batteries...maybe even the whole system? My Jeep (97 TJ) is meant for off-roading and exploring so I'm driving up pot-holed roads and crawling on rough terrain. Would the batteries need some type of suspension to prevent damage?

I like this. Much better than the Tesla. It’s like an cooler version of an golf cart that is street legal. Yeah electric has its issues and draw backs but this is an cool project TJ. Also can these be solar charged as well without ac power.

Oh, about the solar. Yes this will be possible, but of course the time to charge will obviously depend on how many solar panels you have and the size of the solar inverters. Awesome! do you have an estimate of how much such a conversion costs?Thanks
@ElectrifiedVeronika
Жыл бұрын
We will definitely share all the cost that went into that built once we are completely done! And options to reduce cost - the route we went is quite expensive - we picked a very expensive motor - could bring the cost down a lot reusing a used Nissan Leaf motor - and then of course it really depends on where you get your batteries from.
I followed the links on the battery modules and it looks like those are 28.8v. Given there are 7 modules that comes to about 201v nominal. The specs on the motor show over 400v. Is the plan to run it at 200v or is there something else I'm not seeing? I'm learning so I'm really looking forward to this build. Thanks.

Great observation! I did not go into the details this time but in the next video. We are reassembling those modules and make new electrical connections so we will have again 7 modules but at different voltage and a little different form factor, but overall will be 400V then! ☺️

@@ElectrifiedVeronika Good deal, looking forward to seeing it. I looked at the Cascadia Motion motors and inverters but didn't see any pricing. Do you go through a dealer/distributor or request pricing directly? I really like your plan, what you are planning, layout and parts, would work across a lot of other cars and trucks. I have a '80 C10 I was thinking about a LS swap but after driving a Tesla S a few weeks ago I'm more thinking conversion. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
The TJ being an Offroad vehicle im not sure how safe it could be to place the battery in the bottom near the frame rails. They could get directly hit when off-roading by rocks or trees. Maybe some sort of heavy gauge metal box to protect them and the gas tank one? If they are not waterproof maybe find a way to make them. Otherwise the Offroad capabilities would be hinder with the conversion.

Thanks for your feedback! We will build water proof casings around our modules. And right now we are also looking into another concept where we would move the two modules that we had planned in the middle section to the back where the gas tank used to be. We want to take the Jeep off-roading, so we really work on a good, safe and reliable conversion!
